A lot of these catches are by fielders rather close to the batsmen so even if the fielder drops the catch, the batsman would likely get run out if they set off for a run. Getting run out on a drop catch = stupidity of the highest order. Batsmen do run on outfield catches before the ball is caught

@ancientphoenixians seems you know little about cricket. most balls in cricket are rather deflected off of the "shovel" than hit. Meaning the ball deccelerates off a cricket bat.balls are rarely hit hard and clean, lot's go to the side of the batter and in angles where speed is lost, and rarely are they hit out. This has to do with that the bat speeds are very slow, the "bowled ball" hits the ground and loses much of it's force and to begin with, it's not thrown at great speeds to begin with.
@ancientphoenixians the top bowlers reach 90mph, however not the majority, right?. after having traveled and bounced it's likely at 55-65 when hit or deflected off the bat which for obvious reasons doesn't reach the bat speeds of baseball . practically every pitcher in the bigs throws at least 90mph, what's considered a good fastball is at least 95, more than a few top 100. Baseball players could make theese barehanded plays aswell, and they do quite often, so there's really no argument.

wow.. firstly the beginning of my comment was the important part (the bit saying that there are far more likes than dislikes) hence cricket showing its popularity. haha! first of all i like both cricket and baseball. Although cricket is by far my favourite sport, and for good reason. Some of these comments are ridiculous... cricket is BY FAR the more popular sport, played in more nations than baseball. In my opinion cricket requires more skill, both physically and mentally. I would dearly love to see how many catches would be taken in baseball if u didn't use your glove, my guess is a hell of a a lot less. You dont know the meaning of a fucking catch.

@ancientphoenixians seems you know little about cricket. most balls in cricket are rather deflected off of the "shovel" than hit. Meaning the ball deccelerates off a cricket bat.balls are rarely hit hard and clean, lot's go to the side of the batter and in angles where speed is lost, and rarely are they hit out. This has to do with that the bat speeds are very slow, the "bowled ball" hits the ground and loses much of it's force and to begin with, it's not thrown at great speeds to begin with.

Try to watch a t20 match ,its 3 hours long ,has 20 overs (120 balls) and every 3 out of 4 ball is hit hard.
It the 5 day test cricket which is more about temperament and "deflection"
Watch out the batting of Virender sehwag, adam gilchrist , shahid afridi or chris gayle on youtube and then we'll see if you stick to your opinion.
Also ball is thrown at similar speeds in both sports- around 90 mph

@ancientphoenixians the top bowlers reach 90mph, however not the majority, right?. after having traveled and bounced it's likely at 55-65 when hit or deflected off the bat which for obvious reasons doesn't reach the bat speeds of baseball . practically every pitcher in the bigs throws at least 90mph, what's considered a good fastball is at least 95, more than a few top 100. Baseball players could make theese barehanded plays aswell, and they do quite often, so there's really no argument.

Alsp,the reason why bowlers dont reach 95 mph so frequently is not becoz of the bounce, its just becoz they have to keep their elbow straight.Try to bowl with a windmill motion of your arm and you will realize how difficult it is to get even 80mph, still the record for cricket's fastest ball is slightly less than baseball's 101 at 100.3.
Another thing I forgot to mention- you rarely hit 95 mph balls at batter while in cricket its perfectly legal to do so,head or toe...

And if they had a similar competition for bowling in US, believe me even if 1 million people participated, no one will even reach 80mph as it is far more technically superior than pitching.
As for olympic, its not the lack of talent its just lack of facilities and training.Only sport people give a shit here is cricket and to lesser extent field hockey
