At fourteen years old little did I know that thirty years later that I would front the ONLY Irish tribute to S.M. Loved Them then and now. Met Them, enjoyed a drink with Them and even supported Jim (lostboy) in Cork city 2010. How My new gold dreams came true WOW! Thanks Simple Minds....John.
@leebedy71 Brookside was on Channel 4 that started in 1982, this is from 1979, can you see the problem with your theory, surely its the other way round
I bought this album aged 13 on it's 1st day of release. i loved the dark synth sounds and mysterious lyrics and pop sensibility. It's a blast to listen to these songs again, so thanks for uploading.
Always seems like the tune that started their long career, remember buying the single on Zoom label. They still sound fantastic today, wonderful band.
First got into SM when I was around 12. Now I am 25 and this brings back memories! I can only imagine the effect it has on the people who were there right from the beginning!
I agree, this is basically my philosophy too, but this song does sound specifically like Roxy Music. I don't think Roxy Music sounded much like anyone else on their first album. Or if so, I would like to know, it's the best way to discover new (old) music.
I didn't really mean it in a negative way, though it's hard to tell, when tone of voice, facial expression and body language isn't involved. I was merely stating that they ripped off Roxy Music on this song, which I still believe, but I mean it neither positively or negatively, just neutrally. This song is OK, but nothing really special in my ears. Anybody into this kind of music and hasn't heard 1st Roxy Music LP, do it!
A shocking revelation has shed light on my Simple-Minded ignorance... They did really develop their own sound already in 1979, I just discovered "Real To Real Cacophony", their second album, wow, that's really something! Now, I'm just waiting to discover their third album, which, from what I've read, should also be interesting. I wonder what happened that made them SUCK so hard, just a few years later... Maybe because Jim Kerr started hanging out with Bono?
Mmm..I really love this early stuff, but then their was a lot of experimental stuff going on from not only Simple Minds but also Human League before the girls joined, O.M.D, even early Ultravox with John Foxx. Music became much more commercial,Though I wouldn't write off all the later music.
"Bunker Soldiers" by O.M.D. is great! I don't know when the girls joined Human League, but I have a soft spot for certain songs on Travelogue (and also the OTHER version of Being Boiled). And Ultravox post Foxx; there's one song on Vienna LP that I really like, it's called "Mr. X", I think it's awesome! Sounds a bit like "Allies Of Your Mind" by Cybotron.
Then we will have to agree to disaree. I never liked the first Simple Minds album. Roxy Music and Japan come to mind too much. The second album "Real To Real..." is Simple Minds with a sound of their own and it shits all over the first album.
Nonono, don't get me wrong, I suppose you didn't read my second last comment, please do; the road is created as we travel, we discover new things, I'm crazy about Real To Real (I just didn't know it existed at the time)... I am now waiting to discover the one after which is also supposed to be great. We can disagree about Roxy, as I think some of their early material is GREAT! A truly original band. Don't know much about Japan though. I thought Simple Minds were more inspired by Magazine.
Japan in the late 70's was like Roxy meets the Dolls. I'm not real crazy about the 3rd and 4th Simple Minds albums although I might have to give them another listen - I used to own them all (the first 8 anyways) on vinyl. Their fifth record "Sister Feelings Call" I remember liking a lot. The first two I ever heard was their 6th "New Gold Dream" and their 7th "Sparkle In The Rain" which were both pretty good.
totally agree with that. Real to Real was something else with maybe just a hint of Talking Heads Fear of Music . Sons and fascination/sisters feeling call was the zenith though.
Wow, I honestly came across this by mistake, was a fan back in the day and became completely hacked off with the tripe they've served up in the last 25 years. This is edgy, passionate and effortlessly cool and reminds me where the likes of Franz Ferdinand get it from, brilliant.
The beginning reminds me of the theme to Brookside (lol).
Classic!!! I bought this album as a 16 yr old and if I can think that far back, brings back memories of being a teenager (still have the LP somewhere back in Scotland)
I like the Simple Minds's early stuff, but the band really did not come into its own until Sons and Fascination or later. "Life in a Day" is certainly a good song, though I find the backing vocals detract from the performance.
@paulcook1985 This is my all-time favorite Simple Minds song. There is something moving and ecstatic about it. I like his minimal look - the earliest vid. I've seen.

True
Bands always got to start somewhere I suppose.
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery
However, the Minds did develop their own sound in the end.
wildenfree 2 years ago
Which proves that originality isn't necessarily a good thing... I would rather hear them emulating Magazine or Roxy Music any day.
