@SlayerPDX -yeh- a $195 "mitigated" fine for not wearing my seatbelt twice seems a bit exorbitant... sounds backwards, but yeh, it makes me want to wear it less. Call it civil disobedience. The argument I usually get from people trying to justify the law is that MY not wearing a seatbelt makes THEIR insurance premium rise. (Insurance: something else which should also be strictly voluntary.)

Subtract my fines from the Socialist Security Insurance payments I'll never see, right?

Now, we keep seeing this ad during every single commercial break in the Tigers' games. What a great way to spend the non-existent state funds...

Still waiting on the cops for an explanation as to HOW they can actually tell if people are wearing their seat belts. Especially if the people are moving, at night. The whole exercise does seem rather suspicious.

@hydra513 Yeh you can be sure that "seatbelt checks" are a justification to pull people over to try and catch them doing something else... I guess they call that probable cause.

In any case, I found out that if you contest a seatbelt violation (at least in WA state), the "preponderance of evidence" stands behind the cop. That is, just like much else these days, you are guilty unless you can prove yourself innocent. Your word is of lesser value than a cop's, even when he has no other evidence.

Yeah... seat belt use should be an individual choice, not compulsory. If the threat of death or mutilation isn't enough to make someone wear one, then how could a fine be a sufficient deterrent? Stop wasting my money. Stop pulling people over for something concerning personal safety-- the police SHOULD be dealing with much LARGER problems, not harassing private citizens.

Not to mention-- if the goal is truly to keep the public safe, then where are the safety belts on city buses? I've never seen one. What about on motorcycles? Actually, motorcycles and ATVs are notorious for contributing to injury/death motor vehicle accidents... is the next step to outlaw them, or fine people for riding? Let's use our own brains to reach logical conclusions, now.

Its just as bad as the friend of the court taking money from a CS check and then holding it for six months to collect interest instead of them giving it to the family that fuckin needs it.

@SlayerPDX I suggest that it is you who has missed the point, since your scattered and misspelled opinions here seem to express a similar opinion to my own - the state ought to leave seat belts as a matter of personal choice rather than law. Stop protecting us from ourselves. I wear a seat belt because I don't want to die. If someone else doesn't make that same choice, too bad for them.
