you probably "squeezed" a note on one of your fills. that's when you hit the bass pedal at the same time as the green note in an overdrive fill.

i always thought that the amount of pad hits in a fill didn't add anything to the score

No it's not the notes you hit during the fill that get you points it's the notes that are hit AFTER you hit the green note to activate overdrive.
Most of the time this note is a bass pedal. It's kind of confusing but the fill basically "masks" the notes that are in the song. Therefore if you activate overdrive early enough you can hit the notes under the fill.
