the point of the statement is that if you have made friends in your life then you have helped people, and that is a successful life. Porter had not made friends because he had acquired great wealth by taking advantage of people...and the film shows his actions to have negatively effected the world. In essence they are saying we should hope to leave the world a better place than we found it.
If that is the case you have a serious problem in your life, because the most important things in life are actually your family and your friends. And I say that as a very capitalistic thinking person.
@Lincoln2000 Why is having no friends a 'serious problem in your life'? I always wondered this b/c while having friends can help you in times of trouble, such as lending you money, there may be disadvantages. What if your friends somehow backstab you by not paying what they owe you? So, to me, having friends is OK but ultimately, you must depend on YOUSELF as much as you can. There's also an adage: Keep your friends close and you enemies closer.
Of course there could be problems with so called "friends". And of course in matters of business it's better to "depend on yourself". But what you say has nothing to do with friendship as such. You can have problems like that in your family too but is that a reason to say that family is only "ok"? Definitly not. Your statement sounds as if money is for you the most important thing. And that's fine by me. But this is not my understanding of the meaning of life.
@Lincoln2000 I did give money just as an example but I was thinking in the WORST case scenario which might happen and that's why I'm iffy with that adage.
Ok, I see. Of course this adage is not a philosophical essay. And of course there could be cases (for example) in which a man who has friends is a failure or in which you cannot depend on them. You have to interpret this adage in the context of the movie and its message and treated to the (philosophical) question what you should achieve in your life.
