lots of the soundtrack was bad but i liked the juxtaposition in unforgettable you during the opening fight i thought it was interesting. Also i loved the opeining montage to the times are a changing
btw, going into the film and coming out, i really really wanted it to do well. it didnt, i think because it was almost unpresidented for hollywood. i.e. being challenged to think, especially since both movie and film have no bias about itself. anyway, great review. :)
i listen to a lot of your reviews and really enjoy them, especially this one. i agree with you a lot with the movie and book. i had the same experience with the movie after i saw it and every one who had no knowledge of its contents all complained about dr. manhatten being nude, and man that pissed me off to no end.
You should do a review of the version on the super delux DVD that's like 4 hours long or something like that. Really makes the film perfect. And I have to disagree on the soundtrack because it was part of the book too. If you look at the book from a certain perspective there are a large number of references to popular music of the time. The soundtrack in the film imo was trying to represent this. Other wise I highly agree with everything you said
halle berry can act i hate when comic book fans judge certain actors just on their comic book roles instead of watching their other movies maybe you should watch other movies that are not just based on comic books
they should do a Nite-Owl II and Rorsach prequel movie. Like "the end is nigh" watchmen game, but as a movie. See the dynamic duo take down the underboss who showed up in the prison in the film
1 sec ago I think this would have worked much better as a miniseries.I think it was focusing to hard on putting the book on screen that it felt a little cluttered and lost the emotion of the book.I also thought it was to stylized and that the violence and sex scene was gratuitous. The soundtrack completely ruins the tone of the movie. The characters were also way to strong.I'm pretty sure John was supposed to be the only one with powers.
fortunately if you get the ultimate cut you get all of the extra stuff. the vender is in there the pirate comic is in there there are extra fight scenes. it is a great box set and it comes with the whole graphic novel on dvd so pretty cool
The ending needed to be done, because they couldnt really hint at "the squid" the way they did in the comic. But blaming the thing on Manhattan...meh, I dont know.

I loved the movie and I didn't read the book when I first saw the movie. And the book is great, but it is so complex. I didn't like the giant squid thing though. Don't yell at me fans.
I read Lord of the Rings once, because I own the full three books rolled into one. I never read it again, not because it's bad, but because it is way too long and drawn out. I watch the movies a lot though (they're one of my favorites).
I too noticed that "The Spirit" is considered the Citizen Kane of comics. That's because it perfected all the current techniques and invented new ones. Alan Moore said himself that he wouldn't be who he is today without Will Eisner's examples. So as good as the Watchmen book is, I think its best to describe it as "The Godfather" of comics.
You said that the songs were out of place. Well " the times they are a changin" was completely apropreite for the scene with all the flashback. The "the Sound of Silence" did a great job in setting the sound tone during the Commiedin's funeral.
the soundtrack for this movie pissed me of alot as well, because, the only song i wanted to be there was the smashing pumpkins that was in the teaser. the mood of that song just strangley matches the images of the book/movie.

As for the soundtrack, no offense man, but I think you're taking the songs out of context. 'The times they are a changin'' is an iconic 60's folk song by none other than Dylan himself. Besides 'Rolling Stone' and 'Ballad of a Thin Man', 'Times' was the anthem for the counter youth culture, or, hippies, as they have been so named.
Given the film,its hugely ironic.
'Sound of Silence' by Simon and Garfulnkel is both chilling and poignant, man; because the song is about people refusing
does that mean u didnt like the directors cut cuz it was bullshit and had no extra content or that u like the movie thats why u bought it or u didnt like thats why its on ur dresser wht does this mean
*facepalm* Ok, think about this. I BOUGHT the director's cut the day it came out. I didn't get the normal cut, and I didn't rent it at all. Think carefully.
To me, this is the best movie ever made. My only complaint is the sex scene seemed overused just so Snyder could get a R rating. If it isn't at least a cult classic, then may I lose faith in humanity
I think an overused score would of made the film feel more like any other cookie cutter super hero movie and that having such a random but fitting soundtrack helped it stand out. Ozymandias deffineatly deserved more character development.
@blowshimselfupdude Songs are not out of place. For example, sound of siolence was inspired by the story of Kitty Genovese, a woman who was murdered on the streets of New York while 38 people who heard her screams for help stood by and did nothing. The Watchmen each have their own memories of the Comedian doing something terrible as they, too, stood by and did nothing to stop him.
the group i saw the movie with at the midnight showing made the movie even more enjoyable. when the hallujah song was playing one guy screamed out "hallilujah" man everyone was crackin up lol. but still the soundtrack hurt the film. other then that it was a great movie :)
i didn't like it cuz i thought it was boring. alot of unnecessary changes(not counting the squid) also hurt the film. don't forget the jumping from place to place
Dey Tooked outed Da SQUID! Out of everything this is still pretty small, because the outcome was still the same. But still this is the most bloodiest scene in the comic, and therefore, along with other overtly bloody stuff. I felt it should of been kept in the movie. I felt it was a great tribute to Lovecraft, and Zack Snyder could have made it even more horrifying by showing a human survivor gutting her own baby out claiming it was eating her from the inside.
Now when I saw veidt in the movie trailers, I was worried. I felt they were not only making the twist obvious from the start, but also making him into a bad guy. Look at Veidt in the comics, and you a handsome, intelligent, and benevolent looking character in a fantastic purple robe garnered with gold armor and a crown. He looks like a hero. I know that it is an important cinematic technique to darken everything so it looks dramatic but seriously.
One of my main problems with the movie was Silk Spectre, Veidt, and ending. First on ol Silk. Silk Spectre is supposed to be overtly emotional to point where she gets upset over the tinyest thing, almost. In the movie, hardly any emotion. Plus she is supposed to be a chain smoker, and that aspect is supposed to be a subtle clue on who her father is. And she didn't break the crystal palace along with her bottle of Nostalgia. Come on! That part was really symbolic! At least she was hot.
Now some might say that Dr. Manhattan was too emotional, whereas Silk Spectre was not, let drop some tidbit. Dr. Manhattan is emotional, but not on a regular scale. Like Dr. Spock, he is obsessed with logic, but when some tiny beautiful thing happens like lead turning into gold, that is when he sparks up. Otherwise he is disinterested. The main problem with Dr. M is that people don't see what he sees. The movie addressed that in a well done manner if not perfect..
I'd give the movie a B+. It wasn't perfect, but it came awfully close. Sure, the made it even bloodier, an elongated the fight scenes. But that's Hollywood, and it was fun seeing those characters I loved fight. They put in those songs like Ride Of The Valkyries, an Bob Dylan because the book mentioned them. I agree on the addition of "Fuck", it's like they are taking an comic that is already brutal, and taking it up notch.
I just came back from seeing Watchmen in theaters and wow...it was amazing! I especially loved the opening montage, although it confused me a bit (having never read the graphic novel). I liked that even though there was a lot of violence, it was so over-the-top that it wasn't too disturbing. I actually kinda laughed whenever someone blew up into little pieces. xD Although there was some disturbing moments (like the scene where Rorschach is trying to find that kidnapped girl...oh God...)
About Dr. Manhattan's "junk" I can't believe people are all over that.. I seriously only noticed it once through the whole movie (when I watched it the first time) unless you are looking for it - you wont really notice.
Altho from what I hear the company wanted to cut and edit alot of stuff in the film. So Zack Snyder intentionally put it in more then was probably nessicary to piss off the studio people lol.
I actually saw watchmen a few days before it released into theaters WITH Zack Snyder in the same theater and there was a Q&A afterwards with him. He is a really intelligent guy and I'm really impressed how much he has saved the book in becoming a crappy movie - you should of heard the previous script... terrible.
i dont like the ending if the americans own superhuman dr manhattan attacks the US why would the russians care? the whole manhattan attack seems so wierd like why would he do that why not kill all humans why not destroy the whole world it just feels bad also ozymandias whole person is just bad mostly becous of the actor i guess he does not fit at all i think and since i disslike his plan in the movie he is just totally useless
you know I almost agree with you fully on this movie.... I didn't like that they had to cut out the part with the news stand... and the score was out of place which was surprising since the trailer had such cool music
well I've been a fan of watchmen since 99, I read this book like 2 to 4 times a year and I thought the movie wasn't that good, actually I thought it was a visual spectacle, a "por corn flick" not only for the songs, but for a whole lot of things, and even when I agree with you on the performances, that roschach was amazing along with nite owl and the comedian, I thought at the end all of the characters ended up incomplete, like if you didn't read the book, you don't get anything from them.
- it's the same with the story, there is not only the lack of the news paper guy and the kid, or the black shrink issues arround rorschach, but alot of things more, F.E I was realy hurt by the rorschach scene on jail, because you say: such a perfect actor and you don't get to see the whole beautiful dialog that you see in the comic book, it's the constant strugle of the director for puting this huge amount of information in a 2 and a half movie, in the end the movie doesn't leave any message.
in the end, there is no philisophical chock like in the film, and you don't care about the characters like you do on the book, you don't get to conect with anything because of the speed of the events. You know people used to say it was imposible to make a movie out of watchmen, that alot of directors figure this out and leaved the project, now we know that - is not that you can not make a movie out of watchmen, but that you can not make a "good" movie out of it.
oh! and about the music, I gree with you absolutly - except by the begining credits in wich you can hear bob dylan's "the times they are a' changing" I actually thought the music here wasn't the only "good" thing but as a scene this opening credits were the movie's greatest achivement. the way the director showed the whole minuteman era and the rise of the new generation of watchmen was just spectacular!, this for a minute gave me hope.
Man lighten up on the girls who laughed at Dr. Manhattans Peen...Besides most all movies these day don't show male frontal like that. And hey besides a lot were turned on by his muscular Physic ;-)
Ok, I been reading comics/graphic novel for almost 20 years. I didnt HATE this movie but it just felt a little FLAT. Rorschach, was incredible!!! I'm here in New York, the theater was full. Most, everyone had this look on their faces like we just been robbed. My girlfriend Hated it. Overall, as a comic book fan I say support it. But it just didn't have that WOW factor. 2 1/2 stars out of 5
I am sorry. But I do not agree at all with your idea of the soundtrack music. If you understand This story takes place in 1985 and it actually fits the time and setting perfectly. The music is actually what made the movie serious. It just fits the chracteristics of what these superheroes are.
to long and then they say "I Think we should bust Rorschach out of Jail" WTF You Think
#3. Some of the Soundtrack Hendrix I understand but 99 Luftballons Pointless
#4.The Kid that Finds Rorschach Journal in "The Book" some say and even I got the impression that he is Rorschach Son he even has his Red Hair but in the Flick it was just some fat Loser wonder if they missed A Point
1) When you say Sally Jupiter do you mean Sally? Or Laurie her daughter?
2) I agree that the soundtrack was out of place, but I see what they were trying to do to reach the people who had read the book. I know 1 (possibly more) was a Bob Dylan song, which is referenced in the titles of some of the chapters.
3) To my friends and I, Dr. Manhattan's junk was just a little too present. We've come to the assumption that Zack Snyder is gay.
Same on #2, and no I'm not a homophobe haha. I was just trying to convey that Zack Snyder loves to work on movies with buff and nude (or close to it) men. I guess I'm just a lil disturbed that some really deep moments are tainted by his....pendulum.
The Dark Knight was a kids movie lol. There was no blood in that movie at all, it it weren't for the Joker, the Dark Knight would have been a flop like Batman Begins
Ozy wanted to bring about world peace by convincing that the world faced a common enemy so horrible that all of the nations would unite to fight a common threat.
To this end he genetically created a Giant Squid that had psychic ability and teleported it to New York. Upon teleporting to NY it would die and it's death would cause 1/2 million people to die, and many more to go insane.
The world was convinced that there was an imminent alien attack and united to fight the perceived threat.
The other heroes were hamstrung because exposing Ozy's plot would mean that the 1/2 million would have died for nothing and the world would still be on the brink of Armageddon.
Rorschach was the only one unwilling to compromise and go along with the lie. He ventured out to expose Ozy's plot but Dr. Manhattan killed him to prevent him from exposing it.
Rorschach left his journal at the right wing tabloid and they were about to print it from the crank file. This is left open to interpretation.
Giant squid. lol wow Will agian i can't really say anything about that like how a Giant Squid gets to the end but i think the end of the movie then its better then a Giant Squid can you give me more info like why a Squid??
Basicly the squid has a mind of a psycic so when it dies it kills everything around it. And then Ozy made a machine that can transport things but they die once they're transported. So he transports teh squid and it dies. And the world thinks there was an alien attack.
i thought that the movie was amazing and i had read most of the book and was very pleased with it!! i just didnt like how they cut out the comicbook guy and magazene stand guy because it added to a more emotional ending but i still liked the ending better in the movie. Malin Akerman's ASS OHH MY GOD sry for poor grammer im tired
Well I Agree. The songs came from the book. Read the end passage at the end of the book. Thats wair they got the music. Some parts are dumm but they stayed true to the book. Witch is good. Hooded Justice's mask is a wierd color witch caut me off gaurd. I still think this movie and book are the best. 6/5 STARS
Sorry for the missed spelling. I hurt my hand. : )
no really it is not for kids at all rape, most hardcore sex scene in a movie that i have seen, language ,and alot of blood and gore. trust me its not intended for kids just like the comic. plus they wont be able to really understand the film so idk your choice man.
if your 14 or 15 yea prolly you could but i wouldnt want to see this movie with my mom because the silk specture isnude twice. it being a comic book doesnt have to do with anything it, its more of a moral/ethical kind of thing.
It does. And the songs they use are reffrenced. I just think that they setracted from the scenes. But aparently no one else agrees from what I've seen.
As far as the music goes, all those songs that were played during the movie were the same songs mentioned at the end of each of the chapter of the story except for the song that was played during the mars scene. I missed the Black Freighter but look forward to seeing the Extended Cut with it spliced in. But I agree, I thought this movie was amazing and everyone should see it.
I know the music is qouted from the book. But it still felt out of place in alot of the scenes like the sex scene. I think the music worked a few times but on the whole it didn't work for me.
I kind of come from the same backround as you with the book, when I first read it, some aspects kind of went over my head, upon re-reading it, I think its one of the greatest pieces of literature in history. and the movie is JUST like the book, Im going to see it, buy it on dvd, and watch it over and over.
good review man, I'm hopefully going to see this tomorrow. I had a feeling that chick they cast as silk spectre 2 was going to be a let down... oh well, at least she's f-ing hot!! I'm getting off topic a bit here but, are you the guy who did the Jeph Loeb sucks video? If so, I give you extra props. Can't wait to see this film.
Eric i have to agree with everything you said about this Film, I had the same thoughts about Sally Jupiters Delivery and I felt that because the writers didnt focus as much attention on the whole drama of her situation with her Mother and the Comedian it didnt feel so shocking when Sally found out her real father was the comedian. I was much more blown away by that twist in the book.
it sounds like your experience with watchmen is the same as mine, read it 2 years ago, re-reading it now before i see the movie. really excited for this movie. i agree about the female acting thing....especially in these type of movies. people like to think that comic books are are stock action and plot, but the truth is that there is a huge range of emotion that is very hard to transfer to film.
have you ever read from hell

the group i saw the movie with at the midnight showing made the movie even more enjoyable. when the hallujah song was playing one guy screamed out "hallilujah" man everyone was crackin up lol. but still the soundtrack hurt the film. other then that it was a great movie :)

Wait I thought Sally Jupiter was Silk's mom. Are you talking about Sally Jupiter the mother or Laurie Jupiter the current Silk Specter

it's Laurie Juspeczyk.

I did not have a problem with Sally Jupiter. I liked her and I loved Silk Specter

Indeed.

i didn't like it cuz i thought it was boring. alot of unnecessary changes(not counting the squid) also hurt the film. don't forget the jumping from place to place
jointron33 2 years ago
The ending in simple terms....
Chickenzhit 2 years ago
Now when I saw veidt in the movie trailers, I was worried. I felt they were not only making the twist obvious from the start, but also making him into a bad guy. Look at Veidt in the comics, and you a handsome, intelligent, and benevolent looking character in a fantastic purple robe garnered with gold armor and a crown. He looks like a hero. I know that it is an important cinematic technique to darken everything so it looks dramatic but seriously.
Chickenzhit 2 years ago
One of my main problems with the movie was Silk Spectre, Veidt, and ending. First on ol Silk. Silk Spectre is supposed to be overtly emotional to point where she gets upset over the tinyest thing, almost. In the movie, hardly any emotion. Plus she is supposed to be a chain smoker, and that aspect is supposed to be a subtle clue on who her father is. And she didn't break the crystal palace along with her bottle of Nostalgia. Come on! That part was really symbolic! At least she was hot.
Chickenzhit 2 years ago
Now some might say that Dr. Manhattan was too emotional, whereas Silk Spectre was not, let drop some tidbit. Dr. Manhattan is emotional, but not on a regular scale. Like Dr. Spock, he is obsessed with logic, but when some tiny beautiful thing happens like lead turning into gold, that is when he sparks up. Otherwise he is disinterested. The main problem with Dr. M is that people don't see what he sees. The movie addressed that in a well done manner if not perfect..
Chickenzhit 2 years ago
I'd give the movie a B+. It wasn't perfect, but it came awfully close. Sure, the made it even bloodier, an elongated the fight scenes. But that's Hollywood, and it was fun seeing those characters I loved fight. They put in those songs like Ride Of The Valkyries, an Bob Dylan because the book mentioned them. I agree on the addition of "Fuck", it's like they are taking an comic that is already brutal, and taking it up notch.

I thought this movie was over the top cornball.

BearGirl26 2 years ago
About Dr. Manhattan's "junk" I can't believe people are all over that.. I seriously only noticed it once through the whole movie (when I watched it the first time) unless you are looking for it - you wont really notice.
DarkNessBear 2 years ago
Yeah I didn't really notice it that much ether.
Altho from what I hear the company wanted to cut and edit alot of stuff in the film. So Zack Snyder intentionally put it in more then was probably nessicary to piss off the studio people lol.
blowshimselfupdude 2 years ago
I actually saw watchmen a few days before it released into theaters WITH Zack Snyder in the same theater and there was a Q&A afterwards with him. He is a really intelligent guy and I'm really impressed how much he has saved the book in becoming a crappy movie - you should of heard the previous script... terrible.
Oh and awesome review! 5 stars.

you know I almost agree with you fully on this movie.... I didn't like that they had to cut out the part with the news stand... and the score was out of place which was surprising since the trailer had such cool music
LazerDude99 2 years ago
Yeah and the credits had good music too.
blowshimselfupdude 2 years ago
well I've been a fan of watchmen since 99, I read this book like 2 to 4 times a year and I thought the movie wasn't that good, actually I thought it was a visual spectacle, a "por corn flick" not only for the songs, but for a whole lot of things, and even when I agree with you on the performances, that roschach was amazing along with nite owl and the comedian, I thought at the end all of the characters ended up incomplete, like if you didn't read the book, you don't get anything from them.
kurono1999 2 years ago
- it's the same with the story, there is not only the lack of the news paper guy and the kid, or the black shrink issues arround rorschach, but alot of things more, F.E I was realy hurt by the rorschach scene on jail, because you say: such a perfect actor and you don't get to see the whole beautiful dialog that you see in the comic book, it's the constant strugle of the director for puting this huge amount of information in a 2 and a half movie, in the end the movie doesn't leave any message.
kurono1999 2 years ago
in the end, there is no philisophical chock like in the film, and you don't care about the characters like you do on the book, you don't get to conect with anything because of the speed of the events. You know people used to say it was imposible to make a movie out of watchmen, that alot of directors figure this out and leaved the project, now we know that - is not that you can not make a movie out of watchmen, but that you can not make a "good" movie out of it.
kurono1999 2 years ago
I just ordered the book online I'm gonna read it in a few days when it gets here
redmario222 2 years ago
Sweet. You'll have to tell me what you think. My advice is skip the parts at the end of each issue that look like they're from a book.
blowshimselfupdude 2 years ago
oh! and about the music, I gree with you absolutly - except by the begining credits in wich you can hear bob dylan's "the times they are a' changing" I actually thought the music here wasn't the only "good" thing but as a scene this opening credits were the movie's greatest achivement. the way the director showed the whole minuteman era and the rise of the new generation of watchmen was just spectacular!, this for a minute gave me hope.
kurono1999 2 years ago
do you think this movie is just as good as the dark knight?

Ok, I been reading comics/graphic novel for almost 20 years. I didnt HATE this movie but it just felt a little FLAT. Rorschach, was incredible!!! I'm here in New York, the theater was full. Most, everyone had this look on their faces like we just been robbed. My girlfriend Hated it. Overall, as a comic book fan I say support it. But it just didn't have that WOW factor. 2 1/2 stars out of 5
DrDoomFate 2 years ago
I'd give it 4/5 if I rated like that.
blowshimselfupdude 2 years ago
I am sorry. But I do not agree at all with your idea of the soundtrack music. If you understand This story takes place in 1985 and it actually fits the time and setting perfectly. The music is actually what made the movie serious. It just fits the chracteristics of what these superheroes are.
TFchefTF 2 years ago
I understand the music fit the TIME. But not the scenes it was played in.

I'm Torn with this Flick
#1. Silk Spectre II bad Actress
#2. Slow Motion Sex Scene about 5 Minutes
to long and then they say "I Think we should bust Rorschach out of Jail" WTF You Think
#3. Some of the Soundtrack Hendrix I understand but 99 Luftballons Pointless
#4.The Kid that Finds Rorschach Journal in "The Book" some say and even I got the impression that he is Rorschach Son he even has his Red Hair but in the Flick it was just some fat Loser wonder if they missed A Point

blowshimselfupdude 2 years ago
I have a few things to say:
1) When you say Sally Jupiter do you mean Sally? Or Laurie her daughter?
2) I agree that the soundtrack was out of place, but I see what they were trying to do to reach the people who had read the book. I know 1 (possibly more) was a Bob Dylan song, which is referenced in the titles of some of the chapters.
3) To my friends and I, Dr. Manhattan's junk was just a little too present. We've come to the assumption that Zack Snyder is gay.
Good review
cynicalsandman 2 years ago
1) Yes I ment Laurie.
2) I got it. I just din't like it.
3) Some ones a homphobe.
blowshimselfupdude 2 years ago
Same on #2, and no I'm not a homophobe haha. I was just trying to convey that Zack Snyder loves to work on movies with buff and nude (or close to it) men. I guess I'm just a lil disturbed that some really deep moments are tainted by his....pendulum.
cynicalsandman 2 years ago
But that's how it is in the comics.
blowshimselfupdude 2 years ago
Well I know that a decent amount of the scenes that had him like that didn't show it in the comic, but rather his backside or upper body.

i'v got the novel now but there one thing that i dont understand, the ending
in the book after ozymandias says " i did it" ( in the last issue) eveything that follows i dont understand
can some one please explain 2 me the ending of the book.
snake3000 2 years ago
Ozy wanted to bring about world peace by convincing that the world faced a common enemy so horrible that all of the nations would unite to fight a common threat.
To this end he genetically created a Giant Squid that had psychic ability and teleported it to New York. Upon teleporting to NY it would die and it's death would cause 1/2 million people to die, and many more to go insane.
The world was convinced that there was an imminent alien attack and united to fight the perceived threat.
WaltMansFunStuff 2 years ago
The other heroes were hamstrung because exposing Ozy's plot would mean that the 1/2 million would have died for nothing and the world would still be on the brink of Armageddon.
Rorschach was the only one unwilling to compromise and go along with the lie. He ventured out to expose Ozy's plot but Dr. Manhattan killed him to prevent him from exposing it.
Rorschach left his journal at the right wing tabloid and they were about to print it from the crank file. This is left open to interpretation.
WaltMansFunStuff 2 years ago
thank u !!
u really cleared that up 4 me ^_^
snake3000 2 years ago
Giant squid. lol wow Will agian i can't really say anything about that like how a Giant Squid gets to the end but i think the end of the movie then its better then a Giant Squid can you give me more info like why a Squid??
Supernaturalpodcast1 2 years ago
Basicly the squid has a mind of a psycic so when it dies it kills everything around it. And then Ozy made a machine that can transport things but they die once they're transported. So he transports teh squid and it dies. And the world thinks there was an alien attack.
blowshimselfupdude 2 years ago

i thought that the movie was amazing and i had read most of the book and was very pleased with it!! i just didnt like how they cut out the comicbook guy and magazene stand guy because it added to a more emotional ending but i still liked the ending better in the movie.
