  • Brownies, East Village. I was there - saw the whole thing. M.E.S. messed w/ drummer. Very entertaining. Funnier than mexican cock fight.

  • totally agree with "you got wood rolled".

Craig also had already left, according to steve, mark sacked everyone then said they had to ask for their jobs back! Craig refused. Whats with the power trips?

  • I think Mark is a brilliant artist and genius lyricist. That said, he's also an awful drunk. It's gotten worse over the years, too. From what I've gathered, he's an OK guy sober but very hostile when he's had too much to drink. He was drunk off his ass in this video.

  • Nah. Just a good band.

  • Verity of acrimony with no trace of being phony: no laughs here, so free range.

  • SHURRUP BURNS! NOBODY LIKES YA!

  • what a fucking shambles.

  • The NY courts made him do an alcohol program in England and send the results back to NY before he was cleared.

  • He claims they were ignorant in dealing with the cops, not understanding that this is a serious issue in NY and that he was minutes away from going to prison before bail came after standing in a cell all day.

  • He also says he and Julia got in a squabble about the room and the she hit him and gave him a black eye before the show. They got thrown out of the hotel.

  • MES talks about it in his autobiography. He claims they almost missed the plane and left at the last minute ("as usual"), he makes allusions to drug use and rehearsals for a band called The Ark (Mark without the M) behind his back for three days in NY and calls them middle class poseurs. Too bad, because the bad sounds good here. Then he says he made the chick on keys share a room with him, tho is not clear about why. And that he put out a cigarette on her "trainer." Bra?

  • @fosterch

    a trainer is a sneaker.

  • If I were Karl Burns I'd have leathered that prick in the audience, never mind MES.

  • Listen to the crowd, "leave, leave, leave!" Lol, Americans.

  • I assume that the "....three cowering in the fuc#ing dressing room.......as usual..." were Scanlan, Hanley, and Burns. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Mark E. Smith drank all day before this gig.

  • i presume the whole show was filmed? ive always wanted to see it. do you have the full gig?

  • He threw his spare drumsticks down then casually walks away, knowing full well hes coming after him. Huh that lines worthy of the Fall, you can have that Mark E.

  • At least guns are coming out. They handle their drunken rage like people should. Pushing, Punching and kicking and not 9mm. Who was the idiot in the audience. Give him his fucking money back and kick his ass out the door.

  • You can always trust a bass player to try to keep things going. Good on Steve (nice T40 by the way). Mark could be such an arsehole.

  • @mookie2637 Steve's brilliant in this. I thought it was mark saying 'get on there'. at first. ha ha

  • Hah, Mark is such a pussy. "You'll be witness to this!"

  • Err... so where's the fight? Watched this twice and, apart from some barely-mentionable 'shoving'-, there's nothing!!! This is supposed to be the stuff of legend! A lot of people who have described this have got some explaining to do...

  • What song are they playing after the drummer leaves?

  • @babidaboopy

"Lie Dream of A Casino Soul"; kind of surprised they were playing it during this period.

  • @babidaboopy Free Range

  • Free Range

  • Yeesh. WTF, man.

  • The sad thing is, watching them fall apart onstage was more entertaining than seeing them play a regular set by 1998.

  • Mark E Smith is a bad singer, but that's hardly the point. His roughness, ugliness, terseness and obtuse character takes the perspective of quality art when in the right presentation. It's like Duchamp putting a urinal in an art gallery. Mark Smith is wonderful when supported by a great band, like a muddy rock on top of a clean white marble plinth.

  • @xyling

    Zat so? Yawn.

  • they are all drunk no ? wouldn t suprise me if they staged the whole think . cuntz .

  • @montecarlo362

it wasn't staged...smith was arrested the same weekend for assaulting one of the band members. the antagonism was real

  • wasn't a fan of Pritch, he played too solid and faceless, lacking in character and looseness

  • without a band mes is nothing..hence the trancience of band members..

  • he's definately right...MES is always right for fuck sake!!!

  • Well I guess that was long-suffering Fall stalwart drummer Carl Burns? final gig then :-)

Not long after I believe Mark hit his girlfriend keyboardist on the head with a telephone handset.

    Halcyon daze indeed.

  • no, the 1st night of the tour saw julia nagle, the keyboardist, hit mark with a phone during a row, so when they went on, he had the black eye. this was the 4th night where it all went wrong. after the show they had another fight and mark pushed julia so when the cops turned up they arrested him. happy days!

  • So they were fighting at the Brownies...Lord Baden-Powell would be turning in his grave

  • Srsly, is it Brownies??

  • This is Brownies! This IS the fight!

  • im sure this is brownies

  • I thought this was Brownies?

  • do u have any footage of the brownies show where they fought?
