Wind and solar is this way. Biofuels require oil fuel input whose energy content is about equal to that of the produced biofuel output. Dah, ah  so who pays for this? You do through the Farm bill subsidy at $0.64 per gallon of ethanol.

Here's the problem with the theory of using "off-peak" energy hours. Once everyone has the technology to easily track (and adjust) usage to take advantage of "off-peak" rates - everyone will begin doing just that. Thus ushering in the END of off-peak energy periods.
