WoW what a gem! It's pretty loud and there is absolutely no doubt that it's a diesel, lol...the sound reminds me of a big Dually, but other than that it's a really awesome car....maybe its the video that just amplifies the sound of the engine...the interior looks really really good for a car that's almost as old as me (I want to kill myself for saying that, lmfao)...plus both the interior/exterior looks better than ANY American car of time...haaven't seen one of these in years, awesome find!
@Michael3752 Don't beat yourself up too much. ;) I think it's just the way the camera picks it up. The clattering is noticeable but eventually becomes a white noise after a while. I have heard this distinctive clattering since I was little, so I know the difference between the 4-cyl non-turbo 240d and this turbo 5-cyl 300d. A childhood hero. It even sounds like a 5-cylinder once you get the RPMs high. 5-cyls to me sound like mini-V10s, and much better than 4-cyls and smoother and more torque.
@Michael3752 Also because the interior with the exception to the seat cushion for the front is almost entirely vinyl (or Mercedes-Benz Tex). That's why you see S-classes of the same age with MUCH more worn interiors. Because they have leather. S-classes are meant for expensive luxury, whereas E-classes just like this one are meant for economy, safety, space, value, comfort, and longevity. E-classes today still come with Tex vinyl as standard on V6s and diesels. E-classes are car heroes to me.
@1bentley4ever Great point, but when you think of E-classes---especially the modern ones---they farthest idea that would ever associate with them, for me at least, is "economy"....lmao, economy is like a Ford Fiesta or Chevy Aveo, lol...but I get what you're saying---it's all relative
A solid Mercedes. =) One car I wouldn't mind making a video on. Too bad I don't know anyone around with one. My teacher used to have one until she traded it in for a 2006 Peugeot 407.
@alexlovesmac Ahhh, too bad. Yep, this is a fine, tank-like automobile, but you ought to know that about older Mercedes-Benz since your family owns a W126 E230 and a W140 S320L.
@alexlovesmac Oops, I forgot that W126 is the 1980-1991 S-Klasse, which is the best seller of all S-classes. It is the predecessor to your dad's W140 S320L, and subsequently, this W123 300D is the predecessor to your dad's W124 230E.
@MasterSnowstorm Sadly not many in the Memphis metro either....same goes for the 80's, early 90's BMW's....I just don't see them anymore...but people still drive 20-30 year old GM, Chrysler, Ford vehicles aplenty---like they're still fashionable or something, NOT......lmao
@MasterSnowstorm Awesome...unfortunately, most of the vehicles I see that are over, say, 20 years old are one of the Big 3's...and most of them are just plain ugly in my opinion
but sometimes, high quality steel will eventually become low quality steel many years later

@MasterSnowstorm You mean it deteriorates? Sounds like bridge and skyscraper engineering mentality.

@1bentley4ever Yep. Btw, it's W124 230E. W126 is the S-Class.

@1bentley4ever Btw, it's the W124 230E. The W126 was the previous S-Class before the W140.

@MasterSnowstorm They are actually still pretty common in Southern California.

it also makes me sad that Volvo 760s (specifically 1990 models) are hard to find in Eastern Canada :(
Also, I saw a restored Beetle in Toronto last week

@Michael3752 Ford LTDs and Lincoln Town Cars? I see all sorts of old Benzes, particularly W126 S-classes, in San Diego County.

@MasterSnowstorm Too bad, rusting?
1bentley4ever 1 year ago
@1bentley4ever
rusted 760s? not sure about that because Volvo uses Premium Steel.
MasterSnowstorm 1 year ago
@MasterSnowstorm My mom's 1985 Volvo 240 GL wagon was high quality steel, but even for a California car, it started rusting BADLY in some places.
