The listener either loves Miss Caballe or doesn't. She definately has her very own style and interpretation of this, and even as she aged and forgot words, used a music stand and created her own words, it bothers me not! She is and always will be quite a musical phenomina...very much loved in her country where it's not unusual for the audience to applaude right in the middle of her aria;she then stands as a statue and waits..making no acknowledgement of the applause.BRAVO! Montsy!
Probably my favourite version... she sounds so emotional, the voice is beautiful, the pianissimi are unbelievable. Some people seem to complain about her phrasing, but to me it sounds just perfect! BRAVA

Exquisite pianissimi, but so many other things are wrong with the phrasing. All of the lower phrases which follow the high pianissimi are chesty and out of proportion to what precedes them. The trill at 5.23 is very uneven. This is what happens when the total musical concept behind the aria is sacrificed to the showcasing of one particular tecnhical feature.
This was the BBC in the 1970's....why in the world did they not ask Rita Hunter to sing this for them. She was easily the best British Soprano singing this at the time....and she could have worn the same costume.

Caballe sang great bel canto (Bellini and Donizetti) but her Verdi was flawed. She could never hope to sing as wonderfully as Leontyne Price who at the time was the greatest Verdi soprano. Only her Queen from Don Carlos is her excellent Verdi role. Her Aida is only fair; Caballe tried all kinds of roles but some fit and some didn't. Her Verdi wasnt any good sorry. Her Lady Macbeth is all wrong.
I agree w the prev. post-er. Miss CABALLE's singing w her peerless pianissimi/glorious tone also had awkward phrasing & uncertain pitch in this rep.& elsewhere. (even in this clip!) Her habit of truncating both text & often music to faciltate technical challenges is evident here & elsewhere - & yes, irritating to me. I often heard her LIVE & am a huge fan despite any imPERFECTIONS. At her best, & even a bit less, Miss CABALLE remains the owner of 1 of History's most beautiful voices. BRAVA!!
"At the end of the service, Freddie's body exited this world with Montserrat Caballe's voice singing 'D'amor Sull' Ali Rosee' from Verdi's opera 'Il Trovatore'." from 'Freddie Mercury' by Peter Freestone
No point to my statement that follows, but to just say it: This song, by this singer, was played as Freddie Mercury's coffin was entered into the crematorium. I've heard of 2great loves of his life, but this seems to mean he never met his "somebody to love."
(And I do hope the "Miserere" was answered with amazing grace.) Just ponderings...
Are you sure this is that song? I've been thinking the same, but some say it was Ave Maria from Otello. Though D'Amor is mentioned on the website LoverOfLifeSingerOfSongs.
Please read what I actually said, which is: "some people said one of the songs played at Freddie Mercury's funeral was Ave Maria from Otello, while others said it was D'amor, and I'd like to know which one it was."
It's a shame that she didn't record the whole opera in a studio! Her singing is soo beautiful, so expressive and she loos so beautiful and elegant here.
Caballe would be my favourite opera singer if she has retired on the 90 s, when her top notes became disgausting and is she hadn´t recorded lucia di lammermoor, which was a huge mistake. She´s not a lyric coloratura soprano and her mad scene is scary in a bad sense.
Hei there Trumansf! Will you do some of us a favour? When/if you ever meet Verdi, ask him if he has anything aganinst this performance or agaimst this voice.
that doesn't make any sense. besides, singing that high C pianissimo is traditional performance practice for this aria. lots of things like optional high notes we are used to hearing in performance are not written in the original scores...
No puedo creer lo que acabo de oir como es posible que pueda subir a un Do7 en pianisimo, impresionante, simple y sencillamente impresionante definitivamente mi soprano favorita no en balde la nombraron la mejor soprano del mundo
I have always loved Caballe for three things: pianissimi, mind- boggling breath control, and that incredible timbre of her voice. However, unfortunately, she used the pianissimo SO much that it turned into a gimmick. Her voice was just as incredible at full throttle as it was when she sang softly.
Her pianissimi are magical. What I find annoying with Caballe is the fact that she, with the exeption of the pianissimi, has a low intonation. It's always just a pinch too low.. drives me crazy (almost:)
It hink Tebaldi and Caballe had the most gorgeous voices. They also liked each other. Caballe in interview taught that Tebaldi had the most perfect voice. See Tebaldi on Tosca.
Both wonderful voices but the former sounding as if she never studied a word Italian and the latter often matronly. That's not to say their D'amor is not good. Zinka's would probably be my no2 and Price my no 5-6
Unbelievable, she doesn't move a muscle. I can't imagine a better performance. Haunting! Caballe was problematic later in her career but in 1970 she is in her absolute prime. That pianissimo could melt an iceberg! Thanks for posting this!

No, this is not the Ave maria from Otello, you are probably confused because of the recitative included before the L'amor aria.
