Pinback is Indie and they have record label.Indie rock is a genre not just a term that states that the artist records their own music. But Indie can mean that but I think we are talking about genre and not about Independent music.

Actually it's both, the word "indie" does mean what you described, but it can also be used to put certain bands into sub-genres like Indie Rock. It's basically just the sound or style that was made famous back when Indie first came into existence.

This is probably because most bands, artist, etc. signed to a major record label are molded into a more radio friendly sound. I mean that's pretty much commom knowledge, I'm not saying anything new here. I found even myself saying I like "Indie" rock versus other categories of rock...even though I know there isn't really a specific sound.

I also love the subtle, quick laugh they stick in the beginning. Sort of runs with the WWD theme and ties in with March into the Sea, I love how Modest Mouse sticks to their theme and using recurring laughs and words for their album such as "Stubborn Beauty."
