i learned flintknapping, cordage making and basketry from John, just from the book. i'm part Cherokee so i picked up on thing RIGHT away. i was making NICE points in a month, even knapped and pecked a a awesome hammer for pounding/loosening the cambium from honeysuckle and wysteria vines to make cordage for pendant strings and rope for making baskets. John and Geri awe awesome teachers. i HIGHLY recommend their book. one day i'll make a knapping tutorial vid myself
people scoff at me for being into bushcraft and primitive living skills. my two favorite sayings are 'i would rather know it and not need it, than need it and die like you" annnnd "an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure" true in all cases
some people ask "why use primitive technology when we have modern technology ?" well wht happens when all of ur computers fail or technology is gone how are people supposed to survive when there used to having a cell phone to call 911 or a radio to listen to? learrning these skills can help you and is also very fun to put your skills to the test, i think.
John is a veteran and has lived and taught living skills for years. He is the 'goto' guy for anything dealing with natural living. He deserves recognition on his teaching skills and should be given a medal for his conservation of primitive living skills. I do not know him personally, i have read one of his books, and a few articles. He and his wife have large caches of knowledge.
The thing about clothing is that it gets easier as the community grows and is easier for the children because once people have the clothes in the community, these clothes can be passed on to the next generation and re-used for a long period of time. I like this guy though. Sustainable living gives one value to their work and makes everyday a new rhythm and new adventure.

Hi John, I am a Survival Instructor at Camp Mackall NC We had some guys train with you. I have bought your books and am very interested in what you can teach me. How do I keep up with you?
Material things that are practical.and useful..materilistic in a way that they made everything they needed to survive..not the way people are materilistic today.like having more bullshit u dont need like computers cell phones.bigger homes, bigger suv..competing with your neighbor over bullshit..kids today 10 years old have cell phones..who are they calling how important is your life at 10 years ???.Dumb
the first cloths were probably hemp or sheep skins..if u believe in creation.sheep were domestcated from the beginning by god, or easily killed with a lasso and stone kinife and made into fleece cloths
I have learned a large majority of my skills from this man , and his wife . In fact , I still talk to him to this day . Him and Tim Baker are always going back and fourth about sinew backed bows , at least what he told me .
I didn't know Willie Nelson was living outdoors doing this thing! So that's where the expression buck naked comes from. lol maybe 2 or 3 women, in wilderness.. must be free reign?
Harsh enough that thousands died trying to preserve such a way of life & the freedom it gave. Having delt with the wilderness & civilization, I have found only hardship & misery in a 'civilized' life that's harshness is 1000 times worse. My biggest worry was weather & if I wanted big game or small for food & what tools to make from the material it provided.
yes it is hard but it's actually much more simple than living in todays society. think about it. you have nothing to worry about other than your needs if you wanted you made it and before that you didn't have to get a job first. i've based my life on this lifestyle and will begin living in only this way right out of college. you can't be an idiot to be a caveman. the old view on what makes you dumb has become what makes us smart because of the ignorance of wilderness knowledge
Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you say you plan on living a primitive life in the wild after you graduate college? I myself am a college student contemplating this same idea. I'm intrigued, tell me more...
That's most likely because those that learn & practice the skills he & I teach & live by relieves so much artificial stress, like how bad the economy is supposed to be for one. Lost the house to bankers, fire, flood, etc? Build another. Food stock depleted & no money to get it? Hunt & gather greens. Need a tool to do something? Make it. Civilization has given me ONE good thing, my wife. Other then that, it can crumble back into the dust of time as it is the killer of Independence & freedom.
Maybe because they wish to learn more then to just be a good slave to a worthless society. Is that a fair reason why? I know that & my desire to travel are the reasons why I learned to be self reliant almost 40 years ago & still live the life today, even in a metropolitan area I hunt meat & gather greens that others would simply destroy because they are told they are bad for you & just weeds.
Hi karstarla: Yes, I like him very much, it was how we lived in the bush. Except we had a timber company, and the men cut down timber and made their own lumber. I never saw a grocery store until I was around 4 years old.
You know thats how it should be, there would be no food lines if we all grew our own food to some extent and when hard times hit we could all share out of our harvests we are so disabled because we left it all up to a few and because we value green grass and unedible landscapes, I look at the land (everywhere, so vast) and theres barely anything to sustain any of us in our numbers, that could have been much different had we not forsaken the old ways thats for sure
HI KARSTARLA: I agree, this year my neighbor decided to grow tomatoes, and she realized that tomatoes were over 6 dollars a pound. She grabbed her shovel and dug 10 2ft holes in her beautiful yard, and said the "Heck with it, I can't eat just grass!" I was so proud of her, she and her family grew sucessfully their first vegetable garden. She is hooked now, nothing better than organic healthy food, and she said it was so easy to do. Give up the lawn or starve, hmmm easy chocie to make. Caramia
Theres nothing like homegrown tomatoes either, I LOVE them, you definately tell the difference between storebought and homsegrown. Im already craving them now because I didnt grow enough to "can" this year, I have to figure out how much I need this year. Green grass just screams wasted land now lol
I'm starting to grow my miniature tomatoes they will be ready to eat in 54 days. I forgot to tell you, the ones you froze, you can use their seed to grow your plants. Veggie seed so the best when you freeze them for 6 hours, they germinate like in nature, after being froze. Hey I made that vinegar video for you, it's uploading now. Love Caramia
I've had a garden for over 30 years. Started in the 70's. Wherever we moved the first thing I would do is start a garden. At one time we had over an acre in cultivation. AS I got older I'm now down to 40'x20'.
The only thing is, we now live in suburbia. If the shit hit the fan my neighbors would descend like locusts.
Thanks a lot, very helpfull
