Me too! I cried all the way through at the tender age of 16 and i dont even understand hindi but i am indian so maybe its in my blood - the most amazing piece of music that holds me captivated even now
Absolutely awesome song ! Great lyrics by the rebel poet Sahir, SD Burman's brilliant score, Guru Dutt's emotional portrayal, exquisite picturization & Rafi's unmatched genius make this an unforgettable experience. They dont create such magic anymore. Thanks yuan for uploading this nostalgic number of rare class.
I write poems but I wish to write at least one poem that is somewhere close to 0.01% magic of Sahir sahab!! I would consider that to be my greatest achievement in writing. Why 0.01%? Because I know I cannot do better no matter how much do I try!
When such gazals written by poets like Sahir Ludhiyanvi are sung by legends like Mohammad Rafi and composed by Sachin da or Naushad or Khayyam create a feeling that is hard to explain by words. Indian cinema is so lucky that they all worked together!
Every ethical person dilemma -- this how one would feel if one is ethical and dealing with the world and is completely lost and in a bad mood.
Arguably one of the best Hindi films ever made -- heck - one of the best movies ever made, period.
If one wants to find real drama, real mystery, real portrayal of the eternal conflict of good versus evil and the conflict of values on a grand scale -- this is the movie for you - and that too portrayed without special effects, stunts, dushum-dushum.
@mrkhuram2 - I am sorry my friend, I do not know Hindi language. However, I just went through "Wikipedia" to look but they have not mentioned anything about this.
In the past, our friendly viewers always used to clarify such matters and I am sure this time also there is going to be some one who is going to help us.
@mrkhuram2: This is not "Chakle". The other song "jinhe naaz hai hind par" is based on that poem from his 1949 Urdu book "Talkhiyan" meaning bitterness (plural).
@mrkhuram2 Poem Chakle by Sahir was also in Pyaasa as "Yeh Koochey Yeh Neelam Ghar Dilkashi Ke,Yeh Lut-te Huwe Carvaan Zindagi Ke, Kahan Hain Kahan Hain Muhafiz Khudi Ke, Jinhein Naaz Hai Hind Par Woh Kahan Hain?".The last line was changed due to govt pressure on Sahir. Original line was "Sana Khwan-e-Taqdees-e-Mashriq Kahan Hain". Very unusual because Sahir was known not let a Music Director change his words. Many MD's didn't like him for that incl. Madan Mohan. Sahir was a hard headed.
Although very very true , this song does paint a dark picture, forever an optimist, but realist, my favourite song from this film was "Jaane Woh Kaise Log". Post that, I will gladly translate for you...Peace to all.
No my friend I really don't know-I really want to watch this movie though.........do you know where I can get to watch this movie?? And please keep uploading these songs-can't thank you enough!!!! Thanks thanks thanks!!!!!!!!!!!
To my knowledge, there is only one way to watch this film [and many other films] if you do not have the DVD/VCD!!!
There is a wonderful web site called "btjunkieDOTorg". Just go there and type the name of the movie and you get it FREE. I am giving you a "million Dollar worth information"!!!
Please let me know the outcome.
Hope many viewers will be benefited of this important information. Many of those rare movies [English, Hindi, Russian etc] are available there!
thanks a lot for your kind reply.......i'm really pleased to see that you replied...i'll surely check it out and let you know!!!!!!!!!! Thanks.......i'm forever grateful to you...:)
First you will have to download the film before watching. It takes a little time but fully worth the trouble since there are no other place to watch these kind of rare movies.
Film works with symbols and this scene is symbolic to the crucifixion of Jesus. Vijay is standing in same pose, with his hands resting on two sides of the door and whole crowd is watching him. Guru Dutt?s way of saying that ?Yet another sensible person is being crucified by the foolishness and callousness of crowd? !
That is Vijay's statue, to be unveiled in his honor.
Actually in the movie, vijay gave his jacket to a shivering homeless beggar. The beggar dies in a train accident, and people mistook him for Vijay. Suddenly the genius poet who was scoffed by everybody, become revered after death. He reaches in the function organized in his honor.
The crowed ridicules talent while he is alive, but worships him after death. Such is the irony.
It does but in a very direct way. the thing covered is a statue of the guru dutt (the singer) who is presumed dead & the whole crowd has gathered to pay there respects to him. the irony is no one cared for him/his work when he was 'alive'.
BTW 'murda-parast' means someone who worships the dead.
Pyassa alone has many scenes where Guru Dutt is standing in such a way that he gets background of open door and the song 'ye Dunia agar mil bhee jaye to kya hai' is fully in the backdrop of a door. Light is coming through the door and people gathered in the auditorium see Vijay in his silhouette.
Guru duttji has become larger than life after his untimely death. He had that tragic look and handsome looks. In some sense death has no meaning in the sense that talent can not be erased. His greatness is permanently engraved on the hearts of all living and those who will come after us. Thanks! A billion blessings to you ! Life is a flower with a thorn, not one but many.
awesome tune !!!!!!

HIS WORLD OF PALACES AND THRONES, THE SOCIETIES WHO ARE ENEMIES OF HUMANITY.
THIS TRADITION OF HUNGER FOR WEALTH, IF YOU GAINED THIS WORLD, SO WHAT ?
EACH BODY IS WOUNDED, EACH SOUL IS THIRSTY, CONFUSION IN GAZE, SADNESS IN HEART,
IS THIS WORLD JUST AN ILL WIND ? IF YOU GAINED THIS WORLD, SO WHAT?
WHERE A LITTLE TOY IS THE WELLBEING OF ONE, IN THE SAME STREET THEY ALSO WORSHIP THE DEAD,
HERE DEATH IS CHEAPER THAN LIFE, IF YOU GAINED THIS WORLD, SO WHAT?
