  • Fucking hell, i was at this gig. Best gig ever. It was a the old Ritz (which was the "new" Ritz) in Greenwich Village NYC. It was funny because most of the audience were off the boat paddies from the Bronx and they didn't understand that stupid one drink per bracelet system for getting booze at venues. the bartenders just abandoned it out of sheer frustration and gave us whatever we wanted. we literally drank the place dry. paddys day etc

  • RIP Joe, never forgotten

  • strummer. raise a glass

  • I hate to use the word "epic", but this had to be the most epic fucking st pat's day concert ever...

  • @ShackIeMeNot it was. i was there. it was nuts.

  • Now THIS is how to do a cover. Amazing stuff.

  • @RockManX9Productions Not exactly a cover being as Joe Strummer's singing.

  • @RockManX9Productions well technically it's not a cover..

  • Occupy Wall Street, Joe Strummer too.

  • love this. a marriage made in heaven.

  • Fabulous! RIP Joe

  • when did hugh grant join the pogues/clash., haha!!

  • U2 couldn't tie Joe's boot laces, conservative shite!

  • Shame on you hardliners that hate U2 just because they are able to make money in this world. i don't know the Pogues or The Dubliners, but i have heard of The waterboys and u2. I hope The pogues are happy for their success and not just drinking all their money into obscurity

  • @TheJudgeraye I hate to break it to you but Shane from the pogues is a notorious heroin addict poor guy. I did have the biggest crush on him as a teenager. He has the best teeth in music (I had a thing for missing teeth as a teenager I thought it was very punk rock).

  • @karenchristine9 McGowan is notorious drinker. An infamous frontman, A writer of rare talent. An aesthete, A philosopher, certainly. a poet. But not a notorious heroin addict. Pikey Dan from the next block up is notorious heroin addict. . .

  • @khayambashi Bono as we Scottish Clash City Rockers say'' is a bawbag'.......

  • Never heard this before sounds great. We lost a great song writer when Joe died

  • We're an independent label trying to make it in this game and the best way to do that is by being more known on youtube. One of the ways we stand out is we help unsigned artists get more fans by uploading their songs for a new fan base

You can change our future with one simple click.

Please thumbs up so other people can see this and check out our channel and comment with feedback if you like, also if you think we could improve.

If you like check the other artists we have over 60 vids up!

    Cheers!

  • @ThisMeansWarRecords nice to see plain open honesty, good luck to you and your venture ...label, i'll be watching out for your label in the future, best of luck from a paddy stuck in switzerland...

  • Happy Joes Bday y'all

  • @khayambashi Or even worse "instead we have Justin Bieber"

    JUST SHOOT ME NOW!

  • Miss you, Joe.

  • I give a rats ass about the conceded "U2". Give much respect to Joe Strummer and The Clash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything awesome comes from those brains. Thanks for the music guys. I love you:|)>

  • Strummer was something great.

  • Aside from this being one of the best musical performances on youtube, I love how you can transpose Bruce Springsteen into the same sort of postures Joe takes. I love how one era of music builds and recognizes the other, just like Gaslight Anthem now with Bruce. We are all related. It all comes from the same place :)

  • Now THAT is simply fuckin amazing.

  • MAN. At 2:39 the music's marching like an unstoppable Army column. *there's* a show I wish I'd seen...

  • look, Bonehead and the band are great at preaching. everyone else should make a donation whist they move their tax base to Holland coz it.s better for them. This is sheer hypocrisy. isn't it?

  • with everything the whole shaking Bush's hand the whole tax thing going on and also the way bono is all about saving the world with golden credit cards with every thousand spent one cent goes to the poor... I just hate the way everything about U2 is so fake...

  • I don't know why people are hating on U2, they're a good band and they have proved it by being know all over the world for their music, I don't know about you, but I think The Pogues will always have an Irish feel about them, which is a good thing, don't get me wrong. But I see U2 as being more of an international group.

  • Wish I was there that night.

  • seriously U2 may have been good at the start but now they're a whole load of bullshit who's lost nearly everyones respect!! All their songs sound the same! And Bonos an asshole!!

  • @jimjimtrains How did they lose everyone's respect?

  • BEST VERSION EVER

  • What a St.Patrick's Day celebration, irish, australians and englishmen celebrating it in fraternity. Hurrah for Ireland and for Irish!

  • Nope...doesn't get any better than this. And I am a republican.

  • was at the Barrowlands gig when this played, one of the best fucking nights ever

  • I wish I lived in those times. :-<

  • london cllling played on an accordion. now i've flaming seen everything.

  • fuk u jim mliny u no bfuk all about the clash i,m 42 seen them 5 times us a fukn tosser

  • It's the end of the world. Like Motorhead doing Sex Pistols covers. Oops. That's happened too.

  • This is FUCKING AMAZING.

  • happy saint patrick day people!!!

i am in the croud tonight, and i will have a drink on you!!!!!!

BUT STAY EASY, STEP LIGHTLY, STAY FREE!!!!!

    RIP JOE STRUMMER 1952-2002

  • @happyenjoytime So does your comment!

  • Wat the hell was joe thinking...

  • the clash and the pogues, the only 2 bands that really really matter!!!!! =D

  • saw them do this in liverpool, early 1990's. Twer grand, itwer.

  • Thumbs up if Joe Strummer is the man!

Seriously, the Pogues and Joe Strummer are two influences on our band the BArSTuARDS. Keep good music alive!

  • He was such a handsome bastard, then Shane walks on...

  • Holy fucking shit that sounds great.!

  • Awesome! The Irish songwriter winedarksea does an amazing version of this too. Love the accordian solo!

  • lol i was just playing this song on mandolin who knew

  • THANK YOU BASED GOD

  • wheres your elvis like hairstyle?

  • Joe Strummer,What a bummer !

  • @clickMEyouBASTARD you, what a disrespectful twat

  • Eight years......

  • I saw the Pogues on this tour, Strummer was great.

  • @KnightOwl2006 I did as well. As soon as they opened with Fall From the Grace with God my buddy and I never stopped. They covered 5 Clash tunes I think and while I never got to see The Clash, this was the next best thing.

  • the pogues and joe strummer... sick combination.

  • @AliBoulalaSTP Joe Strummer was a member of The Pogues and did a lot of vocals for them so its just The Pogues WITH JS if anything!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @nevillejking

Joe Strummer produced Hells Ditch and did one tour , he was never a "member" of the Pogues. Joe Strummer was a co-founder of the Clash! Joe Strummer was the Elvis of Punk

  • I'm Polish I spend 5 years in Irelan c.o. Armagh I listen to The Clash since 1990 When I lived in Ireland I heard The Pogues for the first time and I loved them!!! I was very sad when I heard about Joe to pass away... Thanks to The Pogues music I'm in Ireland in my mind....

  • Now that's a Crowd!

  • somehow its fitting to hear this from an Irish band LOL

  • This sounds really weird, but good.

  • Pasta La Vista Baby!

  • This is why I love YouTube!

  • sinead o connor

  • Sorry if this has already been answered, but... is there a quality sound recording of this concert available anywhere????????????

  • Comment removed

  • ewww dont mention fake ass u2 in presence of the almighty POGUES

  • @twentynothing You are gay mothafuckin' shit pile not likin' the U2. Gay is all I've got to say, that's right, you heard it here first because you're gay and that's why. Respect the U2 next time fuggtu.

  • @Purplepen123783

    Someone is mad

  • @atomiktom Nah, but seriously U2 isn't bad.

  • Sounds a little rushed?

  • honestly it sounds far more like the clash's studio cut than most live clash versions of this song.

    well done pogues

  • An Irish Band playing London Calling is an oxymoron! Still better than a rendition with Strummer and U2, if Bono would ever permit such a thing!

  • @JimMLINY The Pogues weren't an "Irish" band, they were a London band, if you want to push it, they were a London Irish band (except several of their members were irish anyway). That's why they were so great, they didn't just try to play "Oirish Music".

  • awesome, The Pogues and the Clash standard

  • Joe and the Pogues the Apotheosis !

  • I've never heard London Calling done like this.

  • lol the drummer cant play. lovely video tho!

  • that looks like one hell of a party

RIP Joe, gone but not forgotten

  • 1988 what a great year.celtic winning the double in there centenery year..thatcher getting abuse from fans at scottish cup final..quality times

  • I love Joe, But Shane`s lyrics were soo superior, Shane fought the law and HE WON!

  • this would have been a good night

  • Brilliant, but Joe get back to The Clash asap!!!

R.I.P mate & this world sucks without you mate!

  • To hear this live must have been amazing!!!!

  • I'm in love with Joe Strummer... Wish I could have been there....

  • songkhla parade the only paddys day parade in yhailand started by a mad mick its the craigh

  • kickass incredible i miss joe

  • It's like the last waltz of the 80's....

  • This does me well.

  • where was this filmed?

  • Town and Country

  • Wonder if this is where Ade got the idea for his version with The Bad Shepherds? Brilliant either way.

  • Irish music sounds pretty close to gyspy sometimes, it's the accordeon I guess

It's just awesome, except gypsies suck

  • class tune una fava, io non lho mai vista sta cosa in giro

  • class tune

  • i went to see this gig same year at newcastle it was great

  • I love you

  • Lyrics stand out so much more with the good music . I like it. I was around for the Original.

  • I like this. Even though the circumstances of this performance upset me. The Pogues kicked Shane MacGowan out and recruited Joe Strummer!!!

  • Can you really blame them though? He was so unreliable at the time. It's unfortunate, but sometimes a group has to make that kind of hard decision.

On the bright side, he's back with them!

  • you in a band ?

  • @johnnyscifi That wasn't until a few years after this, if the dates are right. Joe appeared as a guest with the Pogues for a couple songs at least once or twice while Shane was still the band's frontman.

  • Theoretically an impossible combo - but it works ! Gr8 !

  • I disagree. I think it sounds very sharp tone wise and packs a better punch than you'd think.

  • just pure class !! xx

  • very good

  • I alway wondered about the genre of Pogues playing London Calling - Punkrock-Reggae-Folk? But it's fucking great anyway :D

  • Comment removed

  • The Pogues playing Clash songs is like Bob Dylan singing Christmas songs. The first time you hear it, it seems to go against the order of the universe. Then you realize the universe has no order. Then you play it 500 more times.

Flying Spaghetti Monster bless you, Joe.

  • This is one of the best comments I've ever read on YouTube. Kudos.

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch best.. comment.. ever!

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch brilliant comment

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch Perfect description! Thanks!

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch

apart from the facts that both bands are from london, started near camden and are punks!

  • @bennocelt Fair enough! Influentially genre-bending punks at that. Without them, we'd all probably be really sick of hardcore right now...

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch Damn, i never have read such an good answer to a question, i have never asked for. Thanks!

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch an may the flying spaghetti monster be with you too

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch

I agree with playing it 500 times (at the very least!),but the Pogues playing Clash songs should be no surprise whatsoever.

It seems rather natural when considering both artists history.

I remember that Joe,bless him, took over from Shane in the Pogues, not as a career move, but as a way to keep it alive. For Shane.

Joe once said "I can't believe Shane is going to wreck himself".

Ironically Joe is gone now,and Shane has done little since to justify the faith put in him.

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch Ha ha...That is SO true.

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch

I wouldn't even listen to Dylans Xmas songs it went totally against what I liked about him 48 years ago.

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch I would have to disagree with you there. Shaine MacGowan grew up in England, not Ireland, and he was in a punk band called the Nipple Erectors before he was in the Pogues. You can hear Nipple Erectors stuff on YouTube.

  • @danielscissorhands Yep ...Born in England to Irish parents...the First Seven years of Shanes life were spent across the pond...in Ireland..and he did came back to Ireland for the Summer months..... garning such memories this allowed him to write such great songs like 'The Broad majestic Shannon'.....the late Liam Clancy sings a version of this Up on Youtube...which is pure poetry....

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch you realise joe was in the pogues right? why shouldnt they play each others song?

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch you son.....you are a genius

  • @rLadyoftheBlowtorch love you <3

  • Somewhere here in Italy we finally have a road named after him!

Joe, you now rock the heaven!

  • @Rasoir983 I didn't know about this, but I've checked,it's true:in Italy we got a road named after Joe Strummer, in Tonara, a little village in Sardegna. Anyway, I don't know if he would appreciate this...punk has always been about fighting convention and official recognisement and, well, maybe this is more like a promotional operation.

  • ??? in che città??? wich city? well done!

  • Nice vid,

  • 7 years and 2 days since he died

  • Fuck Springsteen, Strummer is Boss!

  • hell yeah dude

  • fuck yeah this is the shit man!

    they rock

  • This is just so fucking brilliant. It puts a huge smile on my face. :-)

  • the ultimate combination...cant beat it

  • What a night!..what a combination!...the best raw roots rock band from Ireland with Mister Strummer, the man himself!

  • Rum, Sodomy & The Clash.

  • @Certex for the win!

  • @Certex ahahahhaa well done

  • @Certex You win.

  • This was at the Ritz !! I was at that this fuckin show !! I was so drunk I didn't even realize I was watching Joe S for about two minutes !! Then I went into a frenzy and drew blood (accidently) from one of the Irish punk dyke cloggers who were pogoing next to me. They didn't mind tho, and It was all great.

  • You must have been gunned....because you were at the Town and Country.

  • Are you sure? I am certain this was at the Ritz( or whatever Webster Hall was calling itself at the time) in NYC in '88. I don't think the booze speed and bad cable tv has debilitated my memory THAT dramatically yet, but maybe I'm wrong.

  • cheVCFjoydivision I am absolutely disgusted with your comment regarding joy divisions shadowplay.. U must be a fuckin yank or sumtin. Joy Division wrote that song almost 30 years before sum thick americans come along and cover it. What emotions to the killers transcend when their playing sum1 elses words. Get a life ya clown... Ian Curtis owns that song....

  • BILLY ELLIOT DANCESES WELL !!!

  • I was there motherfuckers and to see Joe in any way was always brilliant. Especially with the Pogues on St. Patricks Day

  • its not joe

  • yeah.....its joe.....

  • Obviously it is

  • its music....leave it at that.....i think its punk to joe being a punk rock icon and shaen mcgowen being in the same boat with em...but when it all boils down to it its beautiful music.

    cheers friends!

  • great vid. Just caught the Pogues in concert...again. Interesting performance. Pogues / DKM...all good stuff.

  • greata version!!!

    strummer is God.

  • just wow, just wow man, wow:| not even gonna say if that was good or bad, just wow :|

  • Amazing !

  • wow

    incredible combo

    =)

  • Great vid. Check out Joe's version of "Minstrel Boy" too...

  • what a combo

  • best rendition of this song by far- and if you say this isnt punk youre retarded this is the fucking definition

  • I saw this tour, it was the best show I know I 'll ever see. It was at a small club and by the end of the night we were all on the tables. Joe was so humble, he stepped out from the line in the middle of the show, did a couple of songs then went back to his place. I miss Joe.

  • I saw a later tour, same combo, it was fantastic.

    Early 1990s, I think.

  • Very well said fatpak419

  • I think anyone who took the time or effort to explore individual U.S. artists would find that their is a sincere love for what Joe, The Clash and The Pogues brought to U.S. music. I sincerely love and miss their music and I'm not alone here. We're a nation of immigrants and irrational blaming of the U.S. for wrecking your scene needs to fall equally on the shoulders of our 'friends' across the pond for embracing it.

  • Here, here.

  • wow, congratulations. you have won the "stupidest post ever award"

  • awesome

    what is my prize ?
