no.... ok i feel kinda lame for knowing this, but NO he's not reading anything that is written on the back of the card... he's writing out the word on the back of the card with his finger, about 90% of the kid's in these competitions do that. It gives them a visual of the word instead of trying to visualize it in their head or just from memory.
