As a child this show got me so interested ih history. Wish we had shows for our kids like that now. Seems like the media wants to turn the kids into a bunch of queers today!
This was one of my favorite TV Programs when i was 13 years old, getting to learn United States History, looked forward to watching this program friday night from 7:30-8:30 PM from CBS,Channel 5,in Boston,Mass. It is a shame this work is being left to deteriorate in the CBS vaults! Actor,Russell Johnson was also a narrator on this series!
It's really too bad the History Channel can't get this from CBS and show it, at least occasionally. A lot of us boomers would love to see this quality show.
I wouldn't take what you were told about the condition of the tapes at face value. Years ago, a friend of mine went to the vaults where the 1225 episodes of Dark Shadows' 2 inch master tapes were stored. In the corner, in a pile of dust, one of the tapes had fallen off its shelf and became partially unspooled. My friend was told that it was damaged beyond repair and would be thrown out. He cleaned it up and rewound it onto its spool. It turned out to be the last episode. Entire series is on DVD!
What a tragedy, a great series like this being thrown to the wind. I do not believe their story regarding the tapes condition. Thank you for checking.
I was told that the series are in the Vault to stay , reportely the tapes have detoriated and there is no intention of preserving them, writhe to the networks is a waste of time they don't care, The greta adventure will have to remain in our memories forever
An excellent companion piece to "The Great Adventure" would be "Profiles in Courage," a Sunday afternoon series that aired on NBC during the 1964-65 season. It was based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by John F. Kennedy and there was a lot of sentiment involved because the series aired after his assassination. One episode was about John Adams and his defense of British soldiers accused in the Boston Massacre. Another was about the rise of the slave-turned abolitionist, Frederick Douglass.
This fantastic show was my favorite and it planted a deep love of history in me which continues to this day. I am afraid that most kids nowadays would rather play with video games and space out instead of learning the history of their country. I too have been trying to find this on VHS, DVD, anything but have been unsuccessful. Thank God I was born in the 50"s.
This show was taken off the air by James Aubrey, the same genius who took Slattery's People and East Side/ West Side off the air as well. Of course, he also green-lighted such brain -dead trash as Giligans Island and The Beverly Hillbillies .I remember this show as one of the finest and most intelligent in TV history. Like Slattery's People and East Side West Side, it lies moldering in the CBS vaults.
Unfortunately, not enough viewers tuned in to convince James T. Aubrey, the president of CBS {"The Smiling Cobra"- that's how producer John Houseman famously referred to him}, to renew this for another season. He really didn't want this on his schedule, anyway [his attitude was, "too educational"]; the low ratings gave him an excuse to cancel the series, and place "RAWHIDE" back on Friday nights in the fall of '64. CBS produced and owns this series- ask THEM when they plan to release it on DVD.
Where did you find this? Is there more gold to be panned from this stream? I have been searching for this series on any format for years. This is history - the Hunley, Nathan Hale, Daniel Boone and the Dark and Bloody Ground, Wild Bill Hickok,... the list goes on. I've written letters to CBS. No replies.
Thanks for this post. I've been looking for the theme music, in particular. Had forgotten it was composed by Richard Rodgers, one of the greatest composers of American musicals.
thank you so much for the memories I watched this show in 1963 and was haunted by the Episode "the Hunley" wondering what happento the crew of thaty famous Submarine, Of course we now have an answer love the music and as others wish i could find the series
Thank you so much for posting this. This song has been indelibly etched in my mind since I use to watch it. My favorite episode...Nathan Hale. He almost made it but was accidently recognized by his cousin in a tavern, and of course, the British were there and arrested him.
One of my favorite shows in 1963-1964, especially the one about Roger Young and the one about Wild Bill Hickok. Why can't this come out on DVD or be shown on The History Channel? Great theme music, too. Entertaining and educational at the same time.
Thanks for posting this fantastic opening theme! I remember watching this show with my dad in 1963 or 1964. I, too, wish it would become available on DVD. Perhaps someday?
I like this CBS Theme song. But I cannot get this great series to watch from anywhere. Has any studio made them into DVD ? I would like to buy one. Or can anyone upload this series on YouTube ?
I watched this every week and just found the musical theme. I think that if this had been in color, it would have succeeded. But people back then wanted escapism, much like now. Some great actors were on this show but since it only ran one season it's forgotten today.
They release all kinds of garbage on DVD. This show was something my parents encouraged me to watch. And I loved it and began reading about our history because of it.
Thank you! This was one of my all-time favorite TV shows largely due to the great theme song that I looked forward to hearing each week. Wish History Channel would run it. People today need to see it.

This program is why I became a history major. It has given me a deep love for American history beyond the reader digest version we are fed at school.

This was one of the greatest TV Series ever...CBS is committing a crime by letting this show rot.
They balos do the same thing to Slattery's People, East Side/wEst Side. etc.
