According to Robert Fisk in his book "The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East", pp.484,488–489, Israeli defence minister at that time Ariel Sharon and Chief of Staff Rafael Eitan met with the Lebanese Phalangist militia units, inviting them to enter the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps and telling them the PLO fighters were responsible for the assassination of their leader Bashir Gemayel. This is the core information that was neglected/distorted in this movie.

Animated John Lydon, horrific tales of war from the 1st lebanon conflict, intensly surreal medatation on memory and one hell of a powerful ending. What more could you want?! This blowed me away last night. Highly reccomended.
Awesome movie, I really enjoyed it - definitely worth a watch, the best i've seen in a while now :) One of my top 10 for 2009! I watched it online for fr3e :) at FreeMovieZone . n e t
Ari, where are your tears for 100,000 Christian civilians slaughtered by the Palestinians & Muslims during the Lebanon Civil War? Where are your tears for Israeli civilians murdered & maimed by Palestinian terror? I've yet to see any Palestinian film apologizing or expressing guilt for their murder & maiming of thouands of Lebanese & Israeli civilians, while you Israeli leftist filmmakers cry if the Palestinians are the only people victimized which is not true. They are brutal murderers.
Exactly how is the film is supposed to deal with every single issue from all sides? An intelligent person takes a film and uses their brain to realize that it's only part of the story. Are you actually suggesting Ari is portraying the Palestinians as completely innocent? Are you really that stupid?
@karinkushi i am israelian and let me tell you that back in 1947 when the un decided to split the country for both naitons your people started a war with us
otherwise you would a country now, secondly all the wars are casued by yor people's
terroist acts on my people. and i am sorry you dont see it....
@Brazilfilms09able The movie isn't about an apology, or condemnation. It's about personal memory and trauma and the gap between memory and reality, and an attempt to bridge that gap. And anyone who actually bother to see the whole movie (which you obivously haven't) can't possibly miss the love and compation in which the soldier's characters are animated and presented.
It is a mind boggling movie. An eye opener for those who can easily forget the reality and brutality of war. And it is so easy to forget. So simple. To bury it. To never mention it. To throw it out of your system...
but yes, this is based on the experiances of ari folman (the main character, with the beard). the story about the dream his friend has is true, and the majority of the characters talking about their experiences are recordings of interviews he made and then had put to the (beautiful) animation. technically a documentary. except for i think two characters, the friend with the dream and the one in holland, it is all the actual people being interviewed.
See, that's kind of interesting. The graphic novel, to me, was played out as more of a narrative, a walk back in time. I'm assuming you haven't read it, no?
I love this film, only problem is every youtube video has attracted a bunch of dicks that couldn't have missed the point more.
Ari Folman isn't making a statement about the 1982 war, rather, the atrocities that happened that made him want to forget it all in the first place.
Killing is killing, doesn't matter who fires the bullet and who the war is between, it's still wrong and in every war both sides always commit wrongful acts.
Enjoy the film for what it is, and remember those who died
just watched this film and i was blown away! it just really goes to show that War is an ugly thing with no winners no good guys or bad guys everyone involved in war is a loser. The sad thing is, us humans seem to love conflict on several levels not just war. I really don't understand how the human mind works in this way. Live your own life to the best you can and love your neighbours as you love yourself! thats my way of having a personal protest against war.
awesome film. i see these arguments on what is not the best place for debate (and i'm putting it mildly). i believe nobody is right, family originating from ireland, there will always be petty conflict getting blown out of proportion. humans like conflict, almost like it's something to exist for. i can't really come up with a reasonable standpoint, other than thats the way it's been for thousands of years. we're not that much more evolved from apes, except for our own pompousness.
First you have to learn that from a historical point of view this movie is not accurate. Second , the Palestinians are the ones who started the massacre against the Christians in Lebanon(just google the Damur Massacre). Third, I don't think that the Israelis really worrying about their iages because they are slaughtering palestinians til today, just remeber what they did in Gaza
Maybe you should try your ass first you fagged. you should respond with the facts instead of starting with insult. maybe you don't wanna hear the truth!

Funny that a massacre committed by some zionist mad dogs plus some demonic fundamental christian milicas in lebanon against the innocent palestinians in Sabra and Shatella becomes the surprizingly just mere dreams or an adventure of some young jewish boys working out their big american weapons and tanks..so dreaming heh?..well wake up to the reality then...here is a link of the actual massacre that happened in 1982...hope u all find the clip pleasing
no what's funny that in 1976 there were massacre of damour that nobody strangely doesn't want to remember, could it be a revenge in sabra and shatila for the damour massacre?? or it's just when it comes to palestines they are saints and we should forget what they did??
You have heard the law that says, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that?..... If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? (Matthew 5:43-47 )
Sabra and Shatila is unforgivable. In an unrelated comment, I wish the movie would have at least mentioned the former massacres of south Lebanese Christians carried out by the Palestinians, and specifically by the PLO.
I still completely agree with Phalange's movements and politics, but them and The Lebanon Forces did an unforgivable massacre back in Sabra and Chatilah.
It's just like the IRA? Not really,I can't describe them as terrorists at all, because half of the Lebanese christians are behind these political movements.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
We, the Lebanese Christians, did our holy and patriotic duty in carrying out the sabra and chatila operation together with our Israeli brothers and allies.
We are proud of what we did. The palestinians are violent murderers, terrorists...and after being oppressed by them for so long...we went after them. We are proud. And we thank Israel for all the support you have given us throughout the years. We have the same goals...survival.
Your opinion is product of REAL terrorism. Something like: "If one israeli is killed by palestinians, we'll kill hundred of them because they are violent murderers." Do you find it hypocrytical? I do.
No i do not find that hypocritical at all...not one bit. You see, you have just shown us that you are ignorant. The only way to make peace with the arabs is if you defeat them totally. Do you think Jordan and Egypt would have made peace if Israel did not defeat them completely? No. The arabs made it clear they wanted to drive all the jews into the sea. I guess you forgot about that? I have no time for pathetic left wingers.
We ARE Christianity. The biggest mistake the Vatican ever made was to lay down the sword....when they did that, we Lebanese Christians kept ours...and we kept it sharp ;)
turn the other cheek...yeah sure, it they are slapping you. But if they are killing you, well now....that's a different story. If they kill us all, there will be more Christianity....understand?
if we massacared the palis for their endorsement of terror, our lives would be peacefull, but we wouldnt be able to live with our selves.
when war isn't forced upon u, u'd only benefit from avoiding it.
i dont know much of the palis in sabre and shatila, but from the movie, seems to me like they werent a threat. just ordinary people living their lives.
what happened we accepted the palestinians into Leb as refugees. Then they decided they wanted to attack Israel from Lebanon. We Christians said NO! They then started killing, raping, and kidnapping our people. The Lebanese Army did not intervene because half the army were sympathetic to the palestinians. In the end, we had no choice but to arm ourselves and defend ourselves. They commited many massacres against us. Sabra and shatila was revenge for many things they did to us.
i say revenge is wrong, but i cannt judge u, because i wasnt in ur place. it saddens me to hear what u say, because we look for peace with the palis, and from ur experience it sounds like they r not capable of laying down their arms.
i really wish them all the best, i understand history hasn't been just to them, but peaceful solutions are posiible. if they'll only consider talking to those around them.
Yes... i lost a lot of family in one of the massacres. They were civilan, young and old. The Christians in general were not armed at all. Palestinians had an army and did whatever pleased them. Like you, we want to live in dignity and freedom, and had it not been for Israel's help in training and arming us and coming to our aid many times, Lebanon today would not exist. Instead it would be a terrorist state.
Oh wow. An israeli with a conscience. Such a rare find. Still pretending to be a victim with your nukes and american made weaponry? The only reason you think palestinians are terrorists is because they're fighting against YOU from taking their homes and land. Such a thin line isnt it. If we do it its self defense. If you do it, its terrorism. The smokescreen is clearing. Israel's ugly face is finally being revealed.
Typical zionist liar. Everything was fine until the zionists showed up from europe with their merciless gangs. How about you live with 60 years of brutal occupation and lets see how you like it.
Wow! Never heard such ignorant bullshit put quite so eloquently before. Well done! You managed to put together full sentences that may sound true to the untrained "ear". No one's pretending to be a victim here, but attacking Israel seems to be a universal favorite sport lately. I'm as left winged as they come, but get your facts straight! Not everything is black & white.
My facts are straight. Well, unless of course you think facts from the UN Human Rights Council and the international humanitarian organizations on Israel's atrocious human rights record is "ignorant bullshit".
Sadly sometimes it is. I'm not saying Israel is innocent, but it drives me crazy how people lash out without considering both sides. 8 years of rockets & sleeping in shelters are ok? There are genocides throughout the world & nobody seems to care, but when it comes to Israel protecting itself (& killing people in the process, as sad and unacceptable as it is) the whole world roars. I haven't heard of another military force taking every measure to avoid hurting civilians. Nobody talks about that.
I do recall after WWII Israel splitting up the existing state. Somehow after they were massacred they think its okay to do the same? And its not just the US, its all Christian nations. It was spose to to a way to break up Islamic religion...ooops...not so effective
Idiotic comment, Israel had no reson to be in Lebanon or Gaza but to defend itself against these brute animals who call themselfs Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hizbolla. Stagfishnet please study alittle bit and dont post stupid comments in the future.
Okay little tiger, tell me why Israel exists please. there is no defense on any fundamental religious factions...so please use your education to inform me on the forming of the Sate of Israel.
Sounds great...all you have done by the decrying my ignorance is your own...you have your own one sided opinion, and all I seek is an simple explanation from your end. You have none. you are just as stupid as I, in your eyes...do a little service to yourself and defend your opinions with a little knowledgeable discourse, but, not on youtube.
(while the movie is being loaded) I take in account that you don't have honest history books in your country, so you need help..
Israel '48 is about the third time of Israeli sovereignty over the land of Israel (that's Y it is called the land of Israel), which began about 3000 years ago. Just like Spain, we deal with the Arab Muslim invaders. Spain won (Reconquista), and only Bin-Laden wants to get back. People of Israel still fight for their land.
Ha, granted we do not have honest history, I just wanted the discussion to go where it has. The 3000 year old war over land that man cannot settle over. My only idealistic point is, religion will tear humanity apart unless we learn, in modern times, that we can live with ones beliefs and not infringe. We can even share land with the differing belief systems. I will not say it is the fault of any one side these atrocities continue.I want to see Israel exist with diversity in neighbors.
Waltz With Bashir is a brutal look at the effects of war and terror on a soldier, even after more than 20 years, but that's deja vu.The main spectacle here is the insight and look at the Lebanese war, yelling with realism.A stunner, truly.Folman, for the first time, didn't take the Israeli side, nor the Lebanese one,and it's good to be right in the middle, you get to see and deduct things way better, especially when it comes to Lebanese War.
He's very talented but the Phalange members I remember were much like the ISraeli soldiers. They were not the cold blooded killers he showed them to be. Keep in mind that the guys who went in were under Elie Hobeika's rule AFTER Bashir died so they should NOT represent the Phalange as a whole. The Phalange party was there to protect the Christians in Lebanon after the many massacre in Christian Villages especially Damour.
I don't particularly agree on this, Free Lebanon.I'm Lebanese, and I've been documenting myself a lot about our civil war here.Phalange were a militia, and they were kinda ferocious.
Isn't that what happens everywhere? The IRA initially protected the Catholics in Northern Ireland against constant atrocities and discrimination by the Protestant Police, but then they became ruthless killers. I'm just slowly making my way into the details of the history of Lebanese Israeli conflict however. The film was absolutely great by the way.
Yes the film was good. But all i said was it's HIS vision. The cycle of violence was started NOT by the Lebanese. Lebanese were ysed from all the neighbors around them including Israel, Syria, Palestine & Western countries who love to be involved for their own benefit. The cycle of violence continues to this day. There were plenty of bad Christians but they should not represent an ideology that was NEVER meant to kill innocent lives like those of Pales women & children.
You're Lebanese, I understand where you're coming from... did you live in Ain el Roumani? If not, then you probably can't understand where I'm coming from. "They"???? As in ALL of them? I would say the MAJORITY did not like nor were they under command of Elie Hobeika who lead the killings of Sabra which I agree were ferocious & inexcusable.
This film is both remarkable and unmissable. I saw it in London yesterday, it's really powerful and emotive, the audience was stunned into complete silence when the credits fell. I love how it's utterly impartial and just relates one man's process of ascertaining the truth, and then relating that truth in an accessible format to the world. Go watch it. Tell you friends.
I saw it in Jerusalem today, and the audience here was also "stunned into complete silence when the credits fell", which I was very thankfull for because the end of the film was so moving that I cried throughout the credits...
research done. google is useful, as is wikipedia..
in answer to my and others confusion of which version of the song, "this is not a love song" this is..
"This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get is a 1984 album by Public Image Limited. It includes the single re-recorded version of a "This is Not a Love Song," which had been a #5 UK and international hit when released as a single in 1983." - wikipedia

In an unrelated comment, I wish the movie would have at least mentioned the former massacres of south Lebanese Christians carried out by the Palestinians, and specifically by the PLO.
oferet 3 years ago
I still completely agree with Phalange's movements and politics, but them and The Lebanon Forces did an unforgivable massacre back in Sabra and Chatilah.
It's just like the IRA? Not really,I can't describe them as terrorists at all, because half of the Lebanese christians are behind these political movements.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
We, the Lebanese Christians, did our holy and patriotic duty in carrying out the sabra and chatila operation together with our Israeli brothers and allies.
We are proud of what we did. The palestinians are violent murderers, terrorists...and after being oppressed by them for so long...we went after them. We are proud. And we thank Israel for all the support you have given us throughout the years. We have the same goals...survival.
Amen.
sacred1976 3 years ago
Your opinion is product of REAL terrorism. Something like: "If one israeli is killed by palestinians, we'll kill hundred of them because they are violent murderers." Do you find it hypocrytical? I do.
kilian 3 years ago
No i do not find that hypocritical at all...not one bit. You see, you have just shown us that you are ignorant. The only way to make peace with the arabs is if you defeat them totally. Do you think Jordan and Egypt would have made peace if Israel did not defeat them completely? No. The arabs made it clear they wanted to drive all the jews into the sea. I guess you forgot about that? I have no time for pathetic left wingers.
sacred1976 3 years ago
:o) last sentence is the best. your mind is a bit vicious as i can see. how does these nazism opinoins corespond with your christianity?
kilian 3 years ago
We ARE Christianity. The biggest mistake the Vatican ever made was to lay down the sword....when they did that, we Lebanese Christians kept ours...and we kept it sharp ;)
sacred1976 3 years ago
um, actually killing of any kind is forbidden in Christianity. "Turn the other cheek..." sound familiar?
handsomedevil82 3 years ago
turn the other cheek...yeah sure, it they are slapping you. But if they are killing you, well now....that's a different story. If they kill us all, there will be more Christianity....understand?

peacefull life is all we israelis look for.
if we massacared the palis for their endorsement of terror, our lives would be peacefull, but we wouldnt be able to live with our selves.
when war isn't forced upon u, u'd only benefit from avoiding it.
i dont know much of the palis in sabre and shatila, but from the movie, seems to me like they werent a threat. just ordinary people living their lives.
whats the reason for ur civil wars?
ergerus 2 years ago
what happened we accepted the palestinians into Leb as refugees. Sabra and shatila was revenge for many things they did to us.
sacred1976 2 years ago 2
i say revenge is wrong, but i cannt judge u, because i wasnt in ur place. it saddens me to hear what u say, because we look for peace with the palis, and from ur experience it sounds like they r not capable of laying down their arms.
i really wish them all the best, i understand history hasn't been just to them, but peaceful solutions are posiible. if they'll only consider talking to those around them.
did u lose family members in those massacres?
ergerus 2 years ago
Yes... i lost a lot of family in one of the massacres. They were civilan, young and old. The Christians in general were not armed at all. Palestinians had an army and did whatever pleased them. Like you, we want to live in dignity and freedom, and had it not been for Israel's help in training and arming us and coming to our aid many times, Lebanon today would not exist. Instead it would be a terrorist state.
sacred1976 2 years ago
Israel's ugly face is finally being revealed.

israel wants peace not war. it was because palestine terorist we didnt started this wars and all what others think.
like gaza shooted 6 years rockets on israel so we started a war and we got world hate.
try you live with 6 years of alarms no school and you cant go out because of the rockets

Typical zionist liar. Everything was fine until the zionists showed up from europe with their merciless gangs. How about you live with 60 years of brutal occupation and lets see how you like it.
rencrow 2 years ago
Julie15gtc 2 years ago
My facts are straight. Well, unless of course you think facts from the UN Human Rights Council and the international humanitarian organizations on Israel's atrocious human rights record is "ignorant bullshit".
rencrow 2 years ago
Sadly sometimes it is. I'm not saying Israel is innocent, but it drives me crazy how people lash out without considering both sides. 8 years of rockets & sleeping in shelters are ok? There are genocides throughout the world & nobody seems to care, but when it comes to Israel protecting itself (& killing people in the process, as sad and unacceptable as it is) the whole world roars. I haven't heard of another military force taking every measure to avoid hurting civilians. Nobody talks about that.
Julie15gtc 2 years ago 4
I do recall after WWII Israel splitting up the existing state. Somehow after they were massacred they think its okay to do the same? And its not just the US, its all Christian nations. It was spose to to a way to break up Islamic religion...ooops...not so effective
stagfishnet 2 years ago
Idiotic comment, Israel had no reson to be in Lebanon or Gaza but to defend itself against these brute animals who call themselfs Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hizbolla. Stagfishnet please study alittle bit and dont post stupid comments in the future.

Okay little tiger, tell me why Israel exists please. there is no defense on any fundamental religious factions...so please use your education to inform me on the forming of the Sate of Israel.

I should explain to you why Israel exist?!
Why should I waste my time on you?
go and read, study history or read your koran or what ever you read. Iam sure no matter what it is you havnt read it in aproper manner.

For more details search gogle "jihadwatch 101"
8m293 2 years ago

FreeLebanon2007 3 years ago
His whole premise is he is recreating memories after years of essential amnesia.
BenSchneider 3 years ago
I don't particularly agree on this, Free Lebanon.I'm Lebanese, and I've been documenting myself a lot about our civil war here.Phalange were a militia, and they were kinda ferocious.
ledededed 3 years ago

FreeLebanon2007 3 years ago
the muslims massacred the christians, so the christians massacared them back.
as an israeli i'm in favor of the christians, because of christianity's modern views of peace , justice, and sanctity of life.
it could be that their actions showed the muslims, there's a price for the massacares they committed. and perhaps even prevented the next .
but u cant say u r not sorry for what happened.
life today is quiet there, war is in the past. now its upon the christians to teach remorse and compassion.

Yass72ForEver 3 years ago 4
I saw it in Jerusalem today, and the audience here was also "stunned into complete silence when the credits fell", which I was very thankfull for because the end of the film was so moving that I cried throughout the credits...

I went the other way and assumed it was a cover 'cause I haven't heard the original in a while but..
so I guess I am off to research if there even IS a cover out there of that song.
KanedaJones 3 years ago
research done. google is useful, as is wikipedia..
in answer to my and others confusion of which version of the song, "this is not a love song" this is..
"This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get is a 1984 album by Public Image Limited. It includes the single re-recorded version of a "This is Not a Love Song," which had been a #5 UK and international hit when released as a single in 1983." - wikipedia
