if you're using a start-stop pedal switch anyways, why not rig up a rod extension to the jack handle, make it pedal-activated too!, then, if you remount your controls to the operator-side of the work, you could do the job sitting comfortably!
when you get the end close, weld them together, back off the roller and bring the roller back up to were you had it when the ends just touch. make sure with welding it it stays malleable.

Have you thought about using a handwheel with threeded rod, say vice like for tention rather than the jack? Great home build BTW.

@tehbrookzorz Hopefully, we are in the process of turning more dies to allow us to do tubing, pipe, angle, flat on it's side, ect......
