  • Isshinryu is a high bread system that adapted to the times...Today, sai and bo are not carried on a daily basis and the gun as well as the knife, or club is the weapon of choice of the criminal...Therefore we still have to adapt to our environment, as they did centuries ago....Use what works~!

  • Now, with the Help of Joe Swift, we now know where and how Isshinryu came to be...I always felt there was a Wing Chun connection...Some of the forms came from Wong Chun Gung fu, as well as Whooping Crane Gung Fu and upon studying the forms of these systems, one can see how they evolved....More importantly is how they are evolving today....It is how the martial art fits you and your environment as it did from China to Okinawa, because of Politics, as well as environment...guns have replaced sai.

  • I started Isshinryu Karate in 1973, while in the United States Army and over the years after achieving Brown belt, I became ever curious on how Master Shimabuku Tatsuo brought Isshinryu to be...Some of the Kata were not found in the styles taught here in the U.S.

Sure, Seisan is known as Hangetsu in Shorin-Ryu as well as Tekki 1,2&3 are known as Naihanchi Kata, as well as Kusanku= Kwanku; But Wansu and Chinto is what made me curious....

  • too bad it is missing the big portion of kata at .53 :/

  • shorin ryu goju ryu te kenmp <lol.. they are alll okinawin styles that cultivated in or around the same time period as eachother.. i wouldn't be suprised if they also applied the verticle punch.. kenpo even uses the knuckle punch move and i believe that's held in a verticle position,.

  • better!

  • There is a complex movement missing between 0:53 and 0:54.

  • ok now I'm confused...the father of vertical fist karate is is using non-vertical punches?!

  • @GameOf2Halves

its to keep the maintain the bunkai aplications i think

  • @GameOf2Halves Sanchin is a breathing kata, all the moves used within the kata are not used for attacking or blocking. The kata teaches the individual how to strengthen the body whenever you are going to take a blow. Eventually when a student has all but mastered the kata they break it down to just a specific body part (ie. abs, arm, leg). When you ready/strengthen a part of your body (ie. the arm, leg, abs) it is difficult to strengthen a single body party and not the imminent muscles.

  • @5Bishop001 I know it's a breathing kata, but there are some nice bunkai for it eg: wing blocking and applications of mawashi uke. You're right but it's only half the story. Still no-one's told me why he's using horizontal fist punches. Perhaps he forgot ;-)

  • @AMMrawCR Well to me, if you spend the rest of the time using vertical punches, it makes perfect sense to reinforce this in the subconcsious mind by doing the same in the kata. The horizontal punch tradition has already been broken, after all. BTW are there any other styles of karate that punch vertically? Shurin ryu?

  • @GameOf2Halves (continued) at least this is how I have been taught at my low level. My sensei would expound upon this kata far better than I. Hope this answers something.

  • @GameOf2Halves He taught this kata with the horizontal fist and most bb's still do. I was told it was the only time to use it but The Little Dragon was rather fluid. I've seen film of him using a semi-vertical fist. Many of the Isshinryu guys have proven to be more dogmatic and egotistical than their leader.

  • @GameOf2Halves even the twist punch still has relevance, there are times and places to apply twist punches, Also unless you can throw a particular technique you will never have a good understanding of how its mechanics work,My Isshinryu Sensei taught me years ago to basically twist the punch or finish twisting the twist punch at the point of impact that way your knuckles have already gripped the tissue of the torso and as you twist you will rip and damage internal tissue from the torque Osu....

  • @Sochinsensei I'd like to see you grip torso tissue with your knuckles during a punch.

  • @GameOf2Halves Further more the Vertical fist punch is the primary punch of Isshinryu and is a nasty punch at that,Shimabuku Sensei was a beast.

  • Shimabuku rocked!

  • Master Shimabuku is such an amazing innovator of Kara-te. Props to his martial genius.

  • I study Isshinryu karate and I've been doing it for 7 years. I am and 2nd grade brown belt (Ni-kyu) and I've on sunsei (I don't know how to spell it)

  • sunsu

  • what!? jazzdancer11 what you trying to say?

  • @786myfist I swear he sounds like a fool

  • Grandmaster Soken and Hanshi Kise and others always did this very slow, it's not a typical kata as much as a power and breathing exercise to build chi'.

  • your sanchin kata show the low level kicking technique when you all take a step into sanchin stand mines don't. My style is shotoryu.

  • Master Shimabuku thanks again. Kata was formed for many, many reasons. 1st as a disguise to cover up fighting techniques. Breathing, timing, misdirecion, shock, strength, grabs, strikes, throws, jointlocks, fingerlocks, -its all there. Its not how fast Master Shimabuku is doing kata -its whats inside for you to take out and use. Remember Kata is the trunk - bunkai are its branches ! Isshinsense on youtube.

  • what's up sensei cris!?!

  • Hi who is this?

  • many isshin ryu students do not do this kata fast. this is just a simple demonstration of the kata. many schools teach this kata at a slow speed. myself being an isshin ryu student, i was taught this kata very slow, and should last 3 minutes. i also seen in many oikka tournements, this kata being performed slow and powerfull

  • I am also a student of Isshinryu, and was taught to do the kata slowly. During a black belt test, I saw my sensei and assistant sensei breaking 2x4's on the forearms and abdomen of the student being tested, to show how focused an individual becomes while performing this kata.

  • I am black belt 1st dan in shituryu shukoki but in my style we do it completely diferently, its interesting watching others do it

  • i trained in Shotokan and a little of Isshin-ryu and when i learned this kata for the first time i did it slow as compared too the Isshin-ryu students and this was due only to the fact that in Shotokan the movements are done slow and strong ,but in Isshin-ryu the movements are done somewhat fast. My Isshin -ryu sensei noticed the differences in technique I learned in Shotokan .

  • My bad man, I was going by the 1:10 on the video not the actual seconds. Adding the ten seconds lost it would've be about 80 seconds. Still there is no time period as to when to do this kata by. O'Sensei Shimabuku had been doing this kata for roughly 40 years at that point so he didn't require as much time to get the "ki" going as others would.

  • There's no specific time as to when to finish it by.I wonder if anyone noticed that this film was cut & spliced & is losing about 10 sec.,hence your 120 sec.Isshinryu underwent some changes during this time period for those who ask the question of the"horizontal"punch.Shimabuku changed Isshinryu basics to look like everyone else(horizontal). It was after several trips to other schools that he decided to leave it alone since so many schools were still using his original method. I seen it both ways

  • the sanchin kata should take 115 -120 seconds to complete.

  • quick question .. i am in the meibukan goju ryu system, and i know this kata is in that system (dur) but does it exist in other systems?

to all them people saying what it means .. sanchin translates to "three conflicts (or battles): mind, body and spirit"

  • Isshinryu traces it's roots through Gojoryu. Shimabuku Sensei studied under Chojun Miyagi amongst other styles on Okinawa.

  • on the people saying hes not moving slow enough, i reaserched a little, and this whole set of recordings is him just showing the moves and giving a light demonstraation

  • The first kata I learned

  • This is Goju-ryu Sanchin Kata short-form.

  • i have studied isshinryu for about 4 years. i know that is not extremely long. i was shocked by this video. i was always taught that you are supposed to do it slow, powerful, and forceful. He looked mor like he was just moving through the moves.

  • Wow, I was taught that was supposed to be much slower. He is doing it three times faster than what I am supposed to do. =P Go Isshinryu!

  • Im not sure who you study under daihashiryu,

In my experience isshin-ryu does not post hands high(above the obi).

    No disrespect intended.

  • Definitely Shimabuku. Sanchin focuses on internal strength and muscle tension, not speed or striking technique. In the dojo I trained at in the US, our masters would typically strike us with open hand techniques while we performed this kata (usually to the sides of the abs, ribs, legs, and the tops of the shoulders).

  • well this kata comes from fujian white crane.;)....good eye!

  • The reason you see a twist punch... Mr. Shimabuku

is showing the Goju-ryu version of the kata.

  • i thought isshinryu has vertical punch not horizontal but looks clear that hes punching horizontally

  • Typically we do have a vertical punch, there in this type of application (dynamic tension) the vertical punch does not make sense.

Shimabuku took from various styles the elements that made the most sense in the proper application.

This kata, Seunchin and some elements of Sunsu were taken from Goju-ryu, where most of the other elements of Isshinryu were taken from Shorin-ryu.

  • 一心流空手道的 "三战" 叫的套路。 This form is supposed to be about the internal side, isn't it? It has a very interesting aesthetic. I was told it comes from Fujian, from Wuzuquan, and it's called "sanzhan", three battles.

  • burkspatrick, you may have noticed his name in the earlier postings, as well as in the title of the video.

I almost wish this video was never posted. Someone else might decide to go out and learn it... I don't need any more rivals! ;)

  • Who is the one doing the kata. It looks to me like it's Master Alan Wheeler. Am I off base or is it some one else

  • That was Grandmaster Shimabuku(the founder), Master Wheelers was an American.

  • Unless there is something I don't understand..

His name is "Tatsuo Shimabuku" not "Shimabukuro"

  • Shimabukuro is more formal in Okinawa. Higashionna can also be pronounced Higaonna.
