Its all about Improv, and Warren KICKS ASS No Matter what he plays. Derek can definitely cook on the slide, but his tone is a little too smooth on this recording. If you go back, and listen to Duane , his tone had much more bite, and treble high end cut(Probably from the Gibson P-90s ) which are very unforgiving pick ups, and you are literally right out there. If you have good chops, then those pick ups can be your best friend. Take a look at that SG Derek has there(Vintage)like Angus AC/DC
man don't get me wrong, i'm the biggest ABB fan there ever was, but, Derek Trucks just out shone everyone here, well apart from Greggs singin....guess i'm just hearing their age for the first time....
've loved the ABB my whole life. in fact my dad intentionally made the first song that I ever heard after I was born to be Statesboro Blues (raised me right) but I've got to be honest guys, Dickey Betts sucks these days. its just true. Dickey was bringing the band down. I am glad that I got to see Dickey play with the ABB in 99 but Derek blew Dickey off the stage. Duane couldn't have picked a better slide player himself because Derek is better than Duane was.
@komandant10 no man im in my right mind...no one compares to duanes influence...i mean if there was no duane you would have never heard of derek. The truth is though, that duane was only playing slide for just a few years when he died. Derek's been doing it since he was 9. Technique wise he is better than duane, but im not trying to take anything away from duane.
@jtwillis I think if you are going to compare Dickey Betts with one of the current ABB guitarists, you'd have to compare him to Warren wouldn't you? Warren's the one playing Betts' parts, really. But I think you are right in general.
Great to see these old warriors are still out on the road! They are sounding pretty solid too....... "Lay down the backbeat and crank up that trusty Gibson!"
