The scenario you present is extremely general and so I can't give you a specific answer. In general, a fetus has rights to the degree that it is conscious. However, the mother has rights as well such as the right to life. If her life is in danger, the mother has a right to choose her on life over a fetus. Anyways, the scenario you present is extreme and you'd have to provide a specific case for me to even know if your question is meaningful.

I must admit that I'm not informed well enough to come to a conclusion or even to make a reasonable guess. I should study more on the science of fetal development, but I'm sure it's a complex subject. Do you know if there is a scientific consensus about when consciousness experience of pain first develops?

I think if the fetus has developed to the point of being conscious then the killing of that fetus would or should generally be deemed be murder. But I suppose there could be exceptions to this which would have to be determined. I'm even more ignorant about the legal intricacies of how such decisions are made.
Philisophically, ethically, and legally this means that one of these judgements contains an error. If a fetus was considered as property, then this scenario would be feasible, however the fact that a person can be charged with MURDER of a fetus indicates that the fetus has rights separate from those of the mother AND implies that the fetus is a living being.
Why then is it alright for a doctor to kill a fetus, but not alright for an external individual to do the same?
My understanding is that when the mother's life is threatened her life is considered ethically to be of more value than that of a fetus. However, I suppose a mother has the choice to die or risk serious injury if she thought her sacrifice might save her unborn child. So, to answer your question, it depends on the purpose of the person performing the act. It's similar to an officer killing someone who has or may kill someone. The act doesn't excuse the death, but may be deemed necessary.
Good or bad, our society considers it legally and morally justified to kill people in certain cases: an officer protecting the public, the military defending the nation's interests, the execution of criminals, the removing of life support from comatose patients, etc. Abortion is different because of defining when a fetus is conscious to experience pain & be considered an individual. It seems unfair b/c the fetus is an innocent, but so is the comatose patient & so are war's collateral damage.

The truth is, doctors do not perform elective late term abortion in this country. Those who claim otherwise are, for the most part, bald faced liars. Late term abortions are performed primarily for the mother's health and on fetuses doomed by genetic disorders or abnormal development.

The scenario you present is extremely general and so I can't give you a specific answer. In general, a fetus has rights to the degree that it is conscious. However, the mother has rights as well such as the right to life. If her life is in danger, the mother has a right to choose her on life over a fetus. Anyways, the scenario you present is extreme and you'd have to provide a specific case for me to even know if your question is meaningful.

I must admit that I'm not informed well enough to come to a conclusion or even to make a reasonable guess. I should study more on the science of fetal development, but I'm sure it's a complex subject. Do you know if there is a scientific consensus about when consciousness experience of pain first develops?

The law states that it is illegal to kill a human being. The courts however, have determined that life does not begin until birth. Some courts in some states have determined that life doesn't begin until late in the third trimester. This is why abortion is legal.
HOWEVER: Considering these facts, do you think that courts should be allowed to convict murderers of pregnant women on TWO charges of murder: one for the mother and one for the unborn child?

I think if the fetus has developed to the point of being conscious then the killing of that fetus would or should generally be deemed be murder. But I suppose there could be exceptions to this which would have to be determined. I'm even more ignorant about the legal intricacies of how such decisions are made.

Philisophically, ethically, and legally this means that one of these judgements contains an error. If a fetus was considered as property, then this scenario would be feasible, however the fact that a person can be charged with MURDER of a fetus indicates that the fetus has rights separate from those of the mother AND implies that the fetus is a living being.
Why then is it alright for a doctor to kill a fetus, but not alright for an external individual to do the same?

My understanding is that when the mother's life is threatened her life is considered ethically to be of more value than that of a fetus. However, I suppose a mother has the choice to die or risk serious injury if she thought her sacrifice might save her unborn child. So, to answer your question, it depends on the purpose of the person performing the act. It's similar to an officer killing someone who has or may kill someone. The act doesn't excuse the death, but may be deemed necessary.

If your answer is "because it's a doctor" then philisophically that fact should be sufficient to allow a doctor to kill anyone.
I know that courts give the two murder charges for killing a pregnant woman... that's my point.

Good or bad, our society considers it legally and morally justified to kill people in certain cases: an officer protecting the public, the military defending the nation's interests, the execution of criminals, the removing of life support from comatose patients, etc. Abortion is different because of defining when a fetus is conscious to experience pain & be considered an individual. It seems unfair b/c the fetus is an innocent, but so is the comatose patient & so are war's collateral damage.

Basically, what the law is saying is that if you want to keep the baby it's a human, if you don't then it's not.
Without getting into how I feel about abortion, the laws need to be consistent. Either it's a life or it isn't

But that a side, Olbermann does not describe the two as the world would simply be better without them and does not invoke the same level of hatred as calling somebody a "baby killer".

If you watch a lot of these opinion shows, it's not just fox, i've seen cnn and even local shows pick a side. U.s. law makes it easy for the media to say anything they want, once you say something to a million people, the damage is done.

The idea the Fox News has some sort of validity due to high ratings is insane. McDonald's sells more food, does that mean it's the healthiest or best food?
