I don't deny that Tarja has a nice voice, much better than pop singers today. You just don't seem to get how different it is to sing an aria and to sing a role in full opera. Oh, and again, her major was chamber music not opera, a voice can be fine for one but not the other. Anyway, "what if" is pointless.
However, I was just listening to Maria Callas and thought, "Sheeesh, she'd get kicked off

@12321marianne There is no way Tarja would ever have been a professional opera singer. She is a pop opera crossover singer. She has neither the voice or the technique to be an opera singer and sing roles in complete operas, which is what opera singers do. Also opera singers never use microphones.

@12321marianne I know she attended a conservatory. She still has not the voice nor technique to sing in opera. She has never been invited to sing a role in a complete opera and never will. Opera singers only use mics in large outdoor venues with poor acoustics. Netrebko may be well regarded by some, but not by me.

@12321marianne Tarja's major was chamber music not opera. This is very different. Chamber music singers sing art songs with very small chamber orchestras or a piano. It's very different from singing in a complete opera over a full orchestra in 3-5 hour performances where music is much more difficult than this one aria. Also, in the example you mentioned with Netrebko is 1) outdoors with no ceiling and street noise 2) notice how far the mics are from singers.

@12321marianne (cont) Her technique here isn't good enough for a good opera house - the legato is just not good, there is also very little nuances in expression. From the point of view of hitting the notes this piece is probably the shortest easiest aria one can find. The difficulty is in making it smooth, good legato line with notes matching with good legato line - which is missing here; as is phrasing and expressiveness. Also, a full opera involves a lot more than arias.

I know her here, and we share some opinions, but she is a trained singer and I am not, and she knows a lot more about opera than I do. Just because people have similar thoughts doesn't mean they are the same person. Legato can be heard in bad quality recordings too, I can hear it in Patti's recordings, and you can't go worse in recording quality than early 20th century. Ditto about expression.

Or the sound was recorder with a cell phone. As far as I know Tarja sang this at Sanvolinna and filming was prohibited, so it's plausible this to be a cellphone recording.
PS: the quality is bad indeed, but if for you the voice in this video sounds like Callas or Gheorghiu... you really should restrain making more affirmations regarding opera.
You can't even tell: Gheorghiu or Callas, the timbres and technique are polar opposites ffs.

I love her but she is NOT an opera singer nuh uh! She always sounds like she pushes to hard nothing flows. When I hear her "Music of the Night" i cringed....it was a train wreck. It was as if some one kept going up and down with the volume but it was her forceful vibrato.

Tarja is not an opera singer. I agree. But if someone says she is a bad singer, than this one is certainly lying. She never sang a full opera, as @mutinyinheav3n said, but she certainly does very well when it comes to arias and her metal songs.

mmmmm woooww tarja tiene una estupenda voz tiene una tecnica vocal impresionante y claro que es soprano y si tambien es una cantante de opera. otra cossa muy diferente esque cantara en nightwish que es metal sinfonico y aun asiii ellos son un grupo estupendoo lastima que ya no esten juntos pero wooow tarja siempre la admirare por su grandiosa voz

MAria callas was the worse timbre in her time! the opera critics said that all the time. and I think so too. she was a great dramatic woman but not the perfect technique!
the best technique was REnata tebaldi or Maria Malibram
lirico. I can remember that time. I think that Leontyne Price was the main one in the 1960s. Renata Tebaldo was famous, as was Joan Sutherland. I always though that Maria Callas become more famous after she became associated with Onassis. She was a sort of celebrity I guess. I was working in braoadcasting at that time, and Leontyne Price and Victoria de Los Angeles seemed the main sopranos. You don't hear about them now.
lirico. I can just remember back to the time when I was working at broadcasting in the 1960s. Leontyne and Victoria were easily the two most played and popular sopranos. Maria was not really featured much then.
Georgy Cziffra and Issac Stern were also played a lot. You never hear of them now either. How times change!

Si, es una soprano lírica dramática y en su nota más alta que es una Fa#6 no tiene que recurrir al registro de silbido como lo hace Brightman, no la critico, pero para las notas altas tiene que recurrir a ese método, pero hay que comparar las edades, tarja tiene 32 o 33 y Brightman va por los 49

@p1n3da I think their point is Tarja does not sing in operas. Tarja has most certainly sung individual arias from operas before, but she is not an opera singer. She has not been in a full blown opera production before - think Wagner's Ring, Mozart's Flute, etc. There's a fine line between classically trained singer and pro opera singer. This is an aria FROM the opera Gianni Schicchi but she is not IN the opera. You get what I'm saying?

I've had this argument with many of the popera fans and they simply can't get the difference...nor do they have the ears to hear the difference.
relax you all, she just sang this aria for a classical recital, she's not specialized in opera, still she is classically trained, but her specialty is chamber music and kuntzlied, she's good at what she does...
asessualeisbetter is right, opera singers are not supposed to use microphones, not now, not ever. For instance even within the soprano vocal range you have different categories to distinguish what type of orchestras a certain soprano can sing over, i.e. a Wagnerian Soprano needs to have a huge voice to be able o sing over Wagner's arias, and a soubrette will tend to have a smaller voice size. Nonetheless, in opera all sopranos should be heard without a mic over an orchestra.

- Tarja was conservatory when she decided to join NW. So the natural course of her career was becoming an opera singer.
- She has a great voice and perfect technique even for opera, fact demonstrated even here in this badly recorded piece. It was without mic btw.

The quality is very bad and can not tell for sure, but I am 99% certain it is indeed Tarja.
Timbre , technique , diction match and I also I hear her trademark change of vibrato into squillo when wanting to increase her volume.

Or the sound was recorder with a cell phone. As far as I know Tarja sang this at Sanvolinna and filming was prohibited, so it's plausible this to be a cellphone recording.
PS: the quality is bad indeed, but if for you the voice in this video sounds like Callas or Gheorghiu... you really should restrain making more affirmations regarding opera.
You can't even tell: Gheorghiu or Callas, the timbres and technique are polar opposites ffs.

I love her but she is NOT an opera singer nuh uh! She always sounds like she pushes to hard nothing flows. When I hear her "Music of the Night" i cringed....it was a train wreck. It was as if some one kept going up and down with the volume but it was her forceful vibrato.

Tarja is not an opera singer. I agree. But if someone says she is a bad singer, than this one is certainly lying. She never sang a full opera, as @mutinyinheav3n said, but she certainly does very well when it comes to arias and her metal songs.

mmmmm woooww tarja tiene una estupenda voz tiene una tecnica vocal impresionante y claro que es soprano y si tambien es una cantante de opera. otra cossa muy diferente esque cantara en nightwish que es metal sinfonico y aun asiii ellos son un grupo estupendoo lastima que ya no esten juntos pero wooow tarja siempre la admirare por su grandiosa voz

pues mira,su voz limpia no es...engola DEMASIADO...ella en realidad no es dramatica y trata de sonar dramatica pero suena fatal...tal vez en el metal sonaba pasable pero en la opera eso es un error horrible...segun mi tio y tutor,tiene una horrible voz por ese error...y si no se cuida,perdera su carrera. Yo tenia ese mismo error pero gracias a dios ya me lo quite...llevo meses en clases de canto pero se distinguir jeje...

tipico principiante en el canto clasico! queres conocer la verdadera Tecnica clasica?? andate a Europa!! y Estudias.. despues regresas y comentas acerca de la voz de esta soprano para que te des cuenta lo mal que estas, lee un poco libros de canto que te hablen acerca de los registros y compositores para cada voz, eso te va ayudar.
yo creo qeu tu tio esta muy mal si cree que tarja tiene una mala tecnica de bel canto. porque tiene una muy aceptable tecnica.

yo no soy fan de tarja, pero no por eso voy a decir que es mala cantante lirica. si no te gusta Tarja no la escuches, voces parecidas a las de tarja hay muchas en la Opera, Edda moser, Netrbko, renee fleming, etc.! podes escucharlas a ellas.

perdoname,pero esas son verdaderas sopranos dramaticas,tarja es solo una sujeta que sabe cantar pero tiene esa horrible maña de engolar para sonar mas grave y que muy pronto le arruinara su carrera. Por cierto,mi tio y Placido no piensan lo mismo que tu ;-) digo,cantaron juntos,y mi tio mismo es de los mejores en Mexico. Creo que deberias conseguirte un buen maestro para que te ilustre de la verdadera opera amigo,no es por quebrar tu pequeña burbuja

MAria callas was the worse timbre in her time! the opera critics said that all the time. and I think so too. she was a great dramatic woman but not the perfect technique!

lirico. I can remember that time. I think that Leontyne Price was the main one in the 1960s. Renata Tebaldo was famous, as was Joan Sutherland. I always though that Maria Callas become more famous after she became associated with Onassis. She was a sort of celebrity I guess. I was working in braoadcasting at that time, and Leontyne Price and Victoria de Los Angeles seemed the main sopranos. You don't hear about them now.

lirico. I can just remember back to the time when I was working at broadcasting in the 1960s. Leontyne and Victoria were easily the two most played and popular sopranos. Maria was not really featured much then.
Georgy Cziffra and Issac Stern were also played a lot. You never hear of them now either. How times change!

Si, es una soprano lírica dramática y en su nota más alta que es una Fa#6 no tiene que recurrir al registro de silbido como lo hace Brightman, no la critico, pero para las notas altas tiene que recurrir a ese método, pero hay que comparar las edades, tarja tiene 32 o 33 y Brightman va por los 49

Sure.. but she has a microphone, and the opera's singers sing without it.
And then the registration is very ruined..
She sing often wrong notes in the 'Nighwish' songs, that are with no doubts more simple than the opera's one.. so.. she's a good singer, but not an opera singer.
There a lot of singers far better than she!
But i like her voice.. :D

@p1n3da I think their point is Tarja does not sing in operas. Tarja has most certainly sung individual arias from operas before, but she is not an opera singer. She has not been in a full blown opera production before - think Wagner's Ring, Mozart's Flute, etc. There's a fine line between classically trained singer and pro opera singer. This is an aria FROM the opera Gianni Schicchi but she is not IN the opera. You get what I'm saying?

Don't bother explaining stuff to incults and trolls.
Tarja is classicaly trained and she studied lied and church music, not opera.
And opera is not some epithome of quality, it's just an area of singing. Only half-intellectuals consider opera superior and pretentious.
BTW almost every opera aria I've heard lately sang by Tarja is was better than most of what I hear from opera sopranos today.

I've had this argument with many of the popera fans and they simply can't get the difference...nor do they have the ears to hear the difference.

In italy (and not only in this place) in every-theatre the OPERA SINGERS didn't use microphones! - Just in the concerts (outdoor).
I don't know if in Finland is the same thing or not, but this means just one thing: the voices are not power enough to sing an opera!

asessualeisbetter is right, opera singers are not supposed to use microphones, not now, not ever. For instance even within the soprano vocal range you have different categories to distinguish what type of orchestras a certain soprano can sing over, i.e. a Wagnerian Soprano needs to have a huge voice to be able o sing over Wagner's arias, and a soubrette will tend to have a smaller voice size. Nonetheless, in opera all sopranos should be heard without a mic over an orchestra.
