Possessed and Death definitely pioneered the sound, but in my opinion the album that set the standard for Death Metal and set the difference between Death Metal and Thrash Metal was "Altars of Madness" ...

this song is so ominous, dark, and powerful... it sorta make me think epic final boss battle against some ancient powerful dark god-like being. of which could decimate you and essentially leave you in a twisted mass of nothingness if your level was too low... sorry thats my nerdiness speaking XD

@Fall4Kingdom Death was actually the first band which made pure death metal back in '83 and '84.
We were amazed how raw and brutal is was back in those days.Guys were talking about some "death metal" before the seven churches album even came out but of course we didnt know what the hell were they talking about haha.
But anyway those Death demos really have that old school dm feeling and i grant them as the first death metal band ever(also still my favourite band :)

Eh, it would have happened anyway, but bands like Acheron , Deicide, and Morbid Angel made it more socially acceptable and 'cool' to have Satanic performers on stage.
The solo in this song starting at 4.42 is so epic and just amazing. It proves that Erik Rutan is a great guitarist too, as I'm pretty sure that solo is his solo, and the more atonal one that follows starting at around 5.23 is Trey's solo.

The JFAC record doom (with entombment of a machine) was released in 2005. Gateways to annihilation was released in 2000. So if someone ripped off anyone it was JFAC ripping off Morbid. Anyway, Morbid Angel is a much better band, by far.

The solo in this song starting at 4.42 is so epic and just amazing. It proves that Erik Rutan is a great guitarist too, as I'm pretty sure that solo is his solo, and the more atonal one that follows starting at around 5.23 is Trey's solo.

The JFAC record doom (with entombment of a machine) was released in 2005. Gateways to annihilation was released in 2000. So if someone ripped off anyone it was JFAC ripping off Morbid. Anyway, Morbid Angel is a much better band, by far.

Personally, I think this song is good, if a little slow - however, the slowness was obviously intentional, since the previous Morbid Angel album was much faster. The whole Gateways to Annihilation album is kind of doomy in atmosphere. And this song captures that perfectly.
