Serious question... i was looking over my gear and thought if a doctor needed to get into my stomach he wouldn't use a buck knife to do it he would cut a small hole and use surgical scissors to cut a perfect straight line up.....wouldn't this be true for a deer? why do we always use a knife and not scissors anyone ever tried this method i may try it this year
@mkjredemption Well for one thing, if a doctor was needing to get in your stomach your probably not dead. But either way...using a knife..or a gut knife..once you get the hang of it, you can make the entire cut in just a few seconds. It takes to long using scissors.

Is this what I should do: I shoot it, then gut it (field dress it) in the woods, pack it out of the woods back to the truck, string it up with some rope, skin it, cut it up with a saw, put it in an ice chest and take it home for further processing? How heavy is a deer or buck that's been field dressed?

@kglenn86 Most hunters will tell you to get the entrails away from the meat ASAP. The sooner the meat starts to cool down the less "gamey" it will taste. Also, there could be a knick or small cut in the entrails and the less time the meat is exposed to them the better.
I have a question- could the neck get cut open, saving the trouble of cutting the windpipe at such an odd angle? I'm not too handy and the knife might slip =P
@mattybock Get a chain mail glove from a butcher supply place. Keeps your hand safe and gives you better grip. Cutting up too high ruins your hopes of saving the skin for a trophy. I don't split the sternum like they did for the same reason.

@umidontno040394 Every video you will watch where the user doesnt have any problems has a small thin knife no longer than 3 to 4 inches. You dont want a large knife, you want a small one. Since all of the work on your knife is going to be along the belly or curve and not the tip or straight part of the body you need something small that you can run under your finger.

@umidontno040394 as you saw in this video there are no "fast parts" its all delicate incisions. The only time a larger knife might be practical is if your cutting the meat off the animal, and possible removing entire limbs.
But as far as skinning goes, a small knife works best since you have to pull the skin back, and cut a very very very thin layer at a time. You get a bigger knife, you risk cutting too deep. If you cut too deep by a fraction of an inch you risk cutting the bowels/bladder

I'm a vegetarian, but I say hunting is fine, as long as it's done intelligently--i.e. with respect for the environment and the animals. Personally, as far as hunting simply for sport, I think photography is the better way to go, but to each his own, so long as it's not poachers killing an endangered species for money. Feeding the homeless with animals that have no more natural predators isn't the problem. The factory "farm" meat full of hormones and such is what's really wrong.

@ajohnson The dressed weight depends on the size of the buck. I can't remember from class but I think deer lose somewhere around 20% of body weight.

Why on earth would a vegetarian even search for (let alone watch!) a video of this nature? Are you a sadist? Is that why you are so vocal in condemning this upload - because it turns you on? My only bitch about this post is the poor quality of the video which makes it hard to actually see what's going on. Can anyone recommend a similar vid with high quality production values?

I'm a vegetarian, but I say hunting is fine, as long as it's done intelligently--i.e. with respect for the environment and the animals. Personally, as far as hunting simply for sport, I think photography is the better way to go, but to each his own, so long as it's not poachers killing an endangered species for money. Feeding the homeless with animals that have no more natural predators isn't the problem. The factory "farm" meat full of hormones and such is what's really wrong.

A little tough to watch, but, I appreciate you putting this together. As a meat-eater, I like to know where dinner is coming from. Kinda confirms my opinion that hunting should never be just for sport. Down a deer, make use of the hide, the meat and anything else you can.

Ha yall take WAY to long gettin the hide off. I peel enough back to get a golf ball in it and wrap the hide around the golf ball and tie a cable to it and hook the cable to a truck a pull. but if anyone tries this GO SLOW!!! and have some else watch to make sure a leg dont come off!

I find it hilarious how people call people that hunt rednecks when every ethnicity has hunted for survival. Can all the animal rights activists against hunting tell me what you are going to eat when a disaster strikes the US (economic collapse, earthquake, zombie invasion, nuclear war, etc.) and you have no more canned food but are surrounded with deer and you have a shotgun or rifle?

@fickle09 can u tell me how hunters are stupid? i mean the ones that hunt things like panda are stupid because they could hunt something that would overpopulate if we didnt keep them in check like deer. so what if they choose to shoot something they admire. do u realize that if a certain species overpopulates, like humans, even more species are at risk? screws up the ecosystem and other animals starve because all the vegetation has been eaten by deer. but w/e, its your opinion.
