Konami could've ported this to the NES under their Ultra games brand instead of crap like Snake's Revenge,Defender of the Crown,Silent Service, or Mission : Impossible. But then again thank God for emulators.
This game pushes it's host hardware harder than any videogame I've ever seen. Sure, Crysis can look great on even the shittiest cards, but it only runs smoothly on high-end ones. This game looks amazing AND runs smooth constantly! And all this while providing the most complex music ever heard out of an NES/Famicom. I'm surprised the CPU doesn't melt from being pushed so hard.
The Turbo Duo's version is the best version indeed (i own it). It also included some cool cinematic scenes and some extra music. The Turbo Duo version was also ported to the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console.
I remember the good times when I played this game at small age, even only in beginning the first stage can give a very hard times for me to go through it,but i always love to play it even it was very hard to me that time.
I can explain why this game looks so good for a NES game. You see, Konami had it's own graphics chip put into the game to allow for greater graphical effects, such as the fire waves in the first stage. For some reason, Nintendo would only allow companies to use nintendo brand hardware for games imported to the US. Don't ask me why. The US Version of Contra and the Japanese version is a good comparison of the diffrences the Konami graphics card could make.
One can only imagine what changes, if any, this game would have been subjected to had they brought it here to US. Cutting the voice clips, for example...
I never played this game at its time. MY GOD! IT'S FULL OF STARS! :O~~~
I didn't know that the NES was capable of such display. I played Life Force and I was amazed by how beautiful it was, but for some reason I missed this.
I suck hard at this type of games, but I can see the full runs at last. Thank you very much! :D
Congratulations on your skills. Assisted tool runs, my ass XD
Nah, I'm an ''original'' user and will always be. I just think it's more like Gradius in general, and in the arcade it was always the big trio: Missile, Double and Laser. That's the real Vic Viper to me! Besides, some of the other weapons in the other Power Meters seem to be overpowered (in the new games mostly), and I prefer a good challenge if you know what I mean! ;)
I have no idea why. I didn't create the whole "No-Miss" concept, but it seems from the speed-run and super play community that this is the one and only definition for this kind of run.

If you close your eyes it sounds like he's playing Contra.

The music reminds me A LOT of Contra and Super C! I guess being also made by Konami, it's no surprise.

Those huge solar flares are a nice touch! I wanna make a NES game someday. I'm just really inspired the graphics of this game.

I like this game and I still got it. Better than part 1, but difficult though. The Gradius 2 music reminded me of Castlevania.

This game doesn't hold back trying to kill you, does it? Jeez, even the first stage! 5/5 for playing.

I thought this was for the Turbo Graphics 16.

The original version was made for arcades. Then, ports of the game were made, like this one on the NES. The TurboGrafx 16 version is also a port.
SHMUPGurus 3 years ago
Oh, which version is the best? Cause I have this thing that can play all NES games, and I have the VC for the TG16 port.
xgamer3000 3 years ago
The TurboGrafx 16 version is definitely the best, because it's almost a perfect port from the arcade version. =P
SHMUPGurus 3 years ago
Yes! I play it on my Wii. My favourite VC game by far.

actually the best is in the PSP Collection because it's straight arcade port i think, though i must say i enjoy nes version too ^_^

god this game was hard. Way to go.
I especially loved the magically appearing guns in the second to last level.
But why No-Miss? It should be No-Death Run. No-Miss Run would sound like you have PERFECT aim.
