Damn searchlights used to frustrate me everytime that if I'd miss and just pass em they'd all go red.

It's one of those "proceed to the higher difficulty stage" requirements. Destroying all the searchlights allows you to go to Sector Z; miss even one, and you'll be forced to go to Macbeth (which I don't mind so long as I get to see that train crash into the base mwahahaha XD).

I think you get even more points if you take them all out. if you miss them and they turn red, you don't get points from them anymore. Take them all out and you can get a medal.

True, but if a searchlight spots you, you'll also meet more fighters, which could potentially make up the difference of missing out ona searchlight or two. But if you miss the first searchlight; well... might as well restart the entire mission.
