Informative video and the recipe would work for common ants. For more aggressive ones like carpenter ants, it will not work because they are not sugar eaters, Carpenter ants are protein eaters and usually not into baits. I am finding that out the hard way.
@norclozapine 3 grams of borax? That's roughly half a teaspoon. I believe in slow acting eradication so that it kills the entire colony, but isn't that too little an amount? If that is enough, how long before you see any results?
If you have children or pets, use a coffee cans. 1 large, 1 small. Punture small holes half way up, and all the way around each can. Put solution in small can, place lid on, put small can in lg can, place lid and tape. The reason for 2 cans, is it helps keep solution in if can is tipped over.
Great video and tips. Might I suggest a funnel when pouring the borax mix from the cup to the spray bottle, which will keep you from losing the extra liquid.
The ratio of borax is too high... it should only be around 5-10%. You don't want them to die right there on the spot before they make it back to their nest...you goal should be to kill the queen. If you don't kill the queen, you won't be rid of the colony. She can replace those workers just as fast as you kill them.
here's a mixture i use.it's easy.....here's wha u need:
1 tablespoon any sweet falvor jelly
1 teaspoon boric acid
1/4 teaspoon honey
1 rablespoon wet cheap cat food
mix it up and roll it up into small balls small enough so the ants can carry them.leave them around the place they look for food...once they bring them to the queen, she happily eats the treat.and within hours, she dies of heartburn.it is a reeeally good mixture.don't let this to children or pets or it will make them very sick.
Good idea mate! I just made one with jelly mixed with borax this morning. We'll see how it works. I found the idea on the Internet and after much trying I got desperate. I have a long bean plant and it was super infested with the ants. I only hope I added enough Borax (my mixture was 10 teaspoons of Jelly and 1 teaspoon of Borax)
@LooksOrange it's best if you give them a liquid and solid solutions, basically one with the water and one without, this way you get the ants, the larvae and the queen, since the queen and ants eat liquids, the larvae eat solids.
We have bad ant problems here in Texas as well. Well not exclusive to Texas but in Texas nonetheless. How long does one spraying of the solution last for or how long should I wait to spray again? I like finding the beds and pouring boiling hot water over them but I can see where that might be a problem if you can't find the beds or you have a nice lawn you want to keep.
Greg...I have these funny looking bugs(I think there aphids) on a pepper plant with ants crawling around them.I blasted them with a hose, but they came back. What should I do about them?
:O Oh my gosh! Gee, people, the live in Australia is fun, but those frickin' ants are just a pain in the ass! :O Thaks God you have all of this tricks to get rid of them ...
G'Day Greg, Good tip mate, I mix powdered borax with Pal Dogfood and put it in a yellow bucket, for the european wasps, they fly away with chunks back to the nest.
Jobs Done! I have not seen one euro wasp up here this year mate! maybe it's the humidity or all the dragon flies we have had thats doin' them in.
Oh! a lid on the bucket is a must, then drill holes around the bucket, about 11/2" Dia, so the birdies don't get a dose! cheers!
I tell you also, I do have a big problem with slugs since all the rain in Victoria. I go out at night with a torch but they are very elusive. They are disgusting and I hate them more than anything and I'm fed up seeing filthy slimy trails all over my porch each morning, so if you have any tips for getting rid of those slimey slugs that would be great! Love your vids Greg... thanks.
@gregthegardener Ok cool thanks. Don't have many ants, a few but not enough yet for mass killings with borax but ant stuff is expensive so this is really fantastic to know. Hopefully your next gardening insect vid will be on those disgusting slimey gooey slugs... ;o)
That's a really great tip. You won't believe what I do with the ants I have at my place! lol. I tend to leave them a little something near their nest .. so they leave everything else alone! :D
We have a lot of ant in trees, coming in the house occasionally and they might be eating our small garden seedlings :( We used mosquito repellent (spray for your skin) in the house. Worked great! :)Thanks Greg, great tip!
How I hate ants, just hate them. I tried the borax thing a while back with maple syrup mixed in. It didn't seem to work for me but I don' think I had enough Borax mixed in.
I had heard of this, but never seen it in action. Very cool!
In my old place, I put down baby powder. It seemed to keep them out, but maybe it was coincidence that they went away. Pest remedies are tricky with cats in the house.
try dumping cotton balls into this mixture and the ants will take it to the nest!!!

Black ants are the natural enemy of termites (white ants) they are friends and should be honored for their service to society.
Unless they are a real nuisance they are beneficial to your house not being eaten up with termites.

like does this work everytime or do the ants eventually wise up to it and stay away from the borax?
can some of the wiser, older ants start teaching the young ones about the hazard and teach them to stay away from a young age?
I heard that them ants can actually be pretty darn smart and not just strong.
