  • Wonder what all that sounded like???

  • Lots of bad drivers back then.

  • thumbs up for icheckmovies

  • The wagon @10:40 looks like it had a "plastic" sheet (another lol)

  • Just noticed that wagon at @10:40 looks like it had a "plastic" sheet-- another lol

    --Van

  • A slower pace of "hectic"...those personal injury Lawyers must of have a field day lol

  • Someone in 1906 had a lot of 1) money and 2) time on their hands for this to even exist!

  • Seems all the "horseless carriages" have carbide lamps!

  • Air- La Femme d'argent!!!

  • 7:43 :))

  • Man, somebody's gotta fix the H-synch on this piece of history. And I'm not sure if this was filmed in 1906, the cars are quite numerous and some look too new, though I'd love to be proven wrong!

  • 60 Mins was awesome, but not this YouTube video. It keeps rolling out of frame!

  • Anyone ever see the movie Deja Vu? The man in the hat and the boy on the bike (lower right of the screen) at 4:43 exactly, I wish I had a laser pointer right now. I wonder if they have any idea that I am looking right back into their eyes from 104 years in the future. I wonder

  • The Library of Congress has just added this film to the National Film Registry

  • I love it. Real people just living, no traffic lights, simple rules, kids being kids, seems like it almost never existed

  • You REALLY should have edited out that high-pitched sound... but maybe you didn't hear it...

  • @lgndsgn Yeah all i did was turn off the speakers. not that hard of a concept to fix.

  • I assume the streetcar is heading towards the Ferry Building. Can anybody tell which cross streets the trolley ride was between?

  • holding hat, not cell phone..... unless this is like chaplins "time traveller".

  • man on cell phone from 4:14 - 4:17........

  • @RandomConcepts As you saw on 60 Minutes, no one really knew when it was made. It's only just been identified correctly. I'm trying to see if I can get the new digitally "fixed" version.

  • @TheEarthquakeChannel It was shot April 14, 1906, four days before the earthquake.

  • It must have been terribly confusing to have the floor constantly falling from beneath one's feet, and then being transported with it several meters in the air. Has anyone considered that this, rather than seismic activity, may have been the cause of the earthquake?

  • what's that building in the center at the end of the line?

  • @tigerlilly66 I could be wrong (not from there), but I think it's the San Francisco Ferry Building. There's a name for the area at the end of Market St but I don't recall it.

  • @TheKuLeR Yes, that's the Ferry Building at the foot of Market. The tower survived the 1906 earthquake but it stopped the clock at 5:12 for several years. From the 50's until the 1989 earthquake there was a double decker freeway in front of the Ferry Building blocking all of Market Street's view of the clock face.

  • Time of movie changed to early April 1906.

  • @RandomConcepts To be fair those facts just came out.

The Library of Congress had dated it to 1905 it was only a very smart film historian who dated it to April 14, 1906

  • Before the IRS, before the Federal Reserve, the FDA, DEA, etc, etc...

  • It should be possible, by converting the frames to images and wrapping vertically, to clean the tracking on this video.

Maybe an open-source project to do it....

  • The 1906 earthquake and fire not 1905.

  • @lizann4708 The video was made in 1905, they just ment 1905, before the Earthquake the following year. They were not stating that the earthquake took place in 1905.

  • And to think... we *still* see that darn "street view" Google-cam driving around today!

  • So....this was life without stop signs and no street laws.

  • @JayZTupacNas Hardly any difference at all.

  • this is actually in 1906 only 1 week before the earthquake because some of the license plates on the cars aren't as old and weren't being made until right before the earthquake

  • @worganyos 60 minutes fan lol

  • I never get tired of watching this priceless slice of San Francisco history.

  • We should go back to horse and buggy!!

  • @grannygear You forget what a problem horse exhausts were.

Internal combustion engines are much cleaner.

  • 3 people disliked this??? WTF why? idiots "I don't like History."

  • @dubbys Yea, I hate when I hear naive girls or guys my age "I hate history so much", history is one of the most fascinating subjects along with the Universe and general existence.

  • It seems like life was in slow-motion in those days...eerie.

  • @BluHeavens. I saw this story on 60 Minutes as well. THANK YOU for sharing the Updated Facts! And to think that MANY of the people seen in this film...Died a week later after this was filmed.

  • I actually saw something on 60 Minutes about this a few minutes ago. It was actually made in 1906 just a week before the San Francisco earthquake by the Marks Brothers. It's a really interesting film. The show said that the Marks Brothers hired the drivers in the films to keep going around so it would make it look like there were a lot of people there. There were actually only a couple hundred cars in the entire country at the time this film was made.

  • Hey EarthQuake Channel, the research of the date of this film placed it in Spring of 1906 days before the 1906 EarthQuake and the devastating fire afterwards. I just saw the news story on 60 minutes. This film was then shipped off to New York the day before the earthquake. You should change the year in the title above. Thanks

  • I want the guys job on the right hand side of the picture from 1:20 till 1:30. Bring back the horse and carriage to the streets and there wouldn't be much unemployment in the large cities of today.

  • they should have stabilized the film before digitizing!

  • This was about 10 days before the '06 earthquake. That was some interesting investigating that guy did to find out the origin of this movie.

  • They are about to get hit by an earthquake.

  • 60 mins was awesome tonight Thumbs up if you agree!!

  • @Werdtourmother I saw it too on 60min.awsome and earie.I know it was a B&W film but woo,it looked like their all going to a funeral.

  • @Werdtourmother I saw it too on 60min.awsome and earie.I know it was a B&W film but woo,it looked like their all going to a funeral.their all wearing black

  • @MrEnforcer911 They're not all wearing black; dark colors (ie brown) just look black.

  • Hey everyone - it looks like this video is going to be on 60 minutes tonight - there's some mystery about it!

  • It is nice to see how john mccain lived as a young lad.

  • just saw a news piece on this a few minutes ago. apparently the exact date this was shot was April 14, 1906. 4 days before the earthquake.

  • And the most wonderful thing: NOBODY SMOKING! Should have ALWAYS been the case! Ban smoking everywhere!

  • @tripjet999 People smoked quite a lot back then as well. Especially the wealthy. Men had to have their cigars after dinner of course.

I am not saying that smoking is a good thing. Of course it is NOT, but you can't say that nobody smoked in 1905 in one of the wildest cities in America at that time. It's just completely inaccurate.

  • Apparently the first 35mm film ever shot.

  • One thing hasn't changed. Kids still react to a movie (now video) camera. But how did those women in long skirts keep all that horse manure off the hem? Good thing the horseless carriage (automobile) showed up. Is this really 1905 because the autos look like 1910 to 1915 vintage?

  • look at all those algal turns.

  • It,s a real time machine. I see myself one century before now. I'm from Brazil and went to California in the 90's. I will be back soon.

  • agreed, the old market street is cleaner and I don't see any crack heads or visible prostitutes

  • Kind of surprising to see so many cars at this time. I've watched some pre-1905 films where there are virtually no cars.

  • @kingreich22

Watch this clip and your comment about horseless carriages will be solved.

    .

    Cheers!

  • @kingreich22

Sorry, here is the clip... watch?v=roNazxAk5HM

    .

  • @tyronebiggums3 Thanks a lot. Makes a lot of sense now.

  • I love how there's no rules. you can swivel in and out of traffic whenever you please and run out in front of the trolley carefully. You don't have to stop or wait on others. To me its plain natural with all the horse carriages and oldies autos. I am disgusted with the farting civics and monster trucks in this icky era. I don't belong in this era. Everyone dressed more appropriately and were more respectful. what Happened?

  • @blaqteastain I totally agree with you, also with what happened? Morals took a dive, liberation, and slobs. I actually wear a fedora hat with my suit. No one hardly wears them anymore, but I sure do, It compliments my attire.

  • @1skunkus, morals took a dive? where FAR from the end! morals will drop even more, during the next 50 years! i´m pretty sure, that from now on in 50 years, people will have sex openly and for everybody visible, and nobody will do anything to prevent it! society is creating the drop down! the only way to restore order, is, a war! i´ve never seen certain type of things during war!

  • In order to keep from losing movies projects were converted to paper reels. At 13:12 there seem to be a rip in the image. Was this film copied from paper film that was transferred from acetate film?

  • What is most impressive about this is the style of the people. Topcoats, tophats, ties, cuffs, intricate dresses and hats on the ladies. Even the lowly peddlers and service people are wearing a hat and a tie. And even more amazing, after the quake they dig through the rubble in the same garb. Compare that with todays world.

  • Needs horizontal syncing

  • The driver of the car with the license plate of what appears to be #4867, weaving in and out of this film several times, is more than likely Harry Miles of the Miles Bros. who shot this film. He would be one of the first film makers to place himself anonymously in his own movies similar to the way Alfred Hitchcock did. Unfortunately, the earthquake and fire devastated and destroyed all the equipment, future plans, and photos of the studio. Amazingly this survived.

  • Wow! I love this! I Love Market St. I just posted a vid of the trolley on Market St. up-to-date of course

  • .... there are 78 likes and 1 dislike... whoever disliked this, you're just a dick lol

  • let´s say i´d high jack a time machine, and go back to 1905. then walking around wearing a casual look , shades, a cap and taking pictures with a digitalcamera. would someone do something to me for wearing our 2010 look? or maybe for having a digitalcamera?

  • @Nudelsalatbomber They'd robaly just think you're an alien, lol

  • wow, this is some amazing history; thanks for sharing this

  • One of the most interesting videos in existence I'd say.

  • Needs music, cool video but I'm losing attention.

  • Except for the horses I don't think I see a lot of diversity here.

  • @203207ab Oh Geez. Yeah?

  • i don't get it ... where are the overhead cables for the street cars !!!

  • @jogginthenoggin This was filmed on the San Fransisco cable car. The car is powered by a steel cable that runs under the street, hence the extra wide third "rail." At 3:50, you can see an electric streetcar cross the path of our cablecar, and you can see a small black marker on the overhead wire on the right side of the screen.

  • Interesting how the car drivers cross over the tramrails in order to prevent getting stuck in them!

  • @harryoakley

people still try to avoid them cause they knock your steering around a bit

we have the benefit of not having bike tires on our car though

  • 3:22 that guy almost got run over...wow, no traffic rules. nice

  • @gaae2000 No--cars in any quantity had been in existence less than five years at the time.

  • 3:22 that guy almost got run over...wow, no traffic rules. nice

  • 3:22 that guy almost got run over...wow, no traffic rules. nice

  • 3:22 that guy almost got run over...wow, no traffic rules. nice

  • 3:22 that guy almost got run over...wow, no traffic rules. nice

  • it's so cool to google map market street today and stroll down the same street these folks once did.

  • California would be profitable again just by issuing traffic citations and jaywalking tickets for the transgressions found in this footage.

  • What is also amazing is how diverse the population of the actual roadways is. Automobiles, trolleys, horse-drawn wagons and carriages, horses with riders - but also PEOPLE. Humans walking across the streets, or running in the streets, like they had a right to be there as well! Not even any crosswalks - because you can stroll across a street safely.

Nowadays, streets belong to CARS. Get in their way and get killed - and it's their right, because THEY have the right of way.

  • I'm amazed by all of the motorized vehicles. Automobiles were very expensive and difficult to maintain in 1906. That shows what an affluent place San Francisco was in those days. What does the sign on the side of the building say?

  • @rozrogoff Actually, from what I read those cars were staged to make the city appear more modern, which makes sense cars were rare at that time.

  • Wow. Little do any of these people know the cataclysm that awaits them in just one year...

  • 1906 quake & fire...

  • It seems that in actual fact its only 4 days later...new evidence sugests that this was made in 06 just 4 days before the quake.

  • Sad to think every single person is dead. Life looked a lot more simple back then, would love to go back and be on that trolley

  • they all wear suits back then.. no t-shirts, no shorts, no skirts.... nice!

  • You guys are special , thanks for such effort. Beautiful

  • TRACKING!!!

Seriosuly though.... This is amazing! I like the old one way better than the new market street.

  • Want no film roll?...search

San Francisco Market St 4 Days Before The Quake

  • @staphinfection Lol! Awesome 'tracking' comment, mate! Yeah, this is really, really cool to see a genuine non-edited slice of average everyday life. Just look at everybody running within inches of death! Cool.

  • delete the soundtrack and fix the tracking

  • I would love to see stats on pedestrian and automobile accidents from this period before traffic laws. Also interesting to see the difference from downtown where there were lots of people and women, to the approach to the ferry building where there were mostly men and horse drawn carts. Its obvious our love of main street and shopping districts hasn't changed much over the years.

  • Aren't people women?

  • Ha, last time I looked they were. That was really lame of me.

  • awesome

  • Amazing - Thanks for posting this. It looks like everything has changed since then except for one thing:

    Human behavior!

  • wow .. what a fuckin trip!

  • a real gem. a remarkable piece of footage and so glad it was shared here for many to enjoy/

  • I had to mute this because of the high-pitched whine as the audio track. Might wanna filter that out... makes me feel like I'm in a room with an old CRT television that's on but not displaying anything.

  • At 6:00 a guy on the right almost gets hit by a car.

  • Fascinating!

  • This is an amazing view into our past. It is a privilege just that this exists.

  • Awesome!

  • Fascinating! Pedestrians and cars walk and drive today as in 1905 - no wonder there are so many accidents

  • I was just thinking that same thing... But for some reason whenever i watch this recording, i feel a connection. I don't know how to describe it. Possibly just because i never knew we had a camera that could record film 105 years ago.
