@Chegs45 sorry I didn't quite get across what I was trying to say - I was actually having a go at Phil Collins more than trying to defend Alan. As a point of interest, did he actually say he would leave the country in 1992, as if he did, it seems there would have been a mass exodus, as I've seen the same quote attached to Paul Daniels, Bruce Forsyth, Des O'Connor, Brian May, David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Simon Bates?
@Chegs45 Alan's never lived outside the UK, unlike Phil Collins who sings about homelessness, and then lives outside the UK to avoid paying the taxes that might provide homes for some people.
I had a friend who's sadly no longer with us that manned a soup kitchen in Stoke when the Marchers came through the City; they were attacked by mounted police for no reason. The moral of the song is as appropriate today as ever.
@mrvikingdna He was born in Fatfiels,Sunderland,County Durham. He moved to Jarrow as a small child, He attended Jarrow Grammar School not 100 feet from where I'm sitting rite now :) .He was the founding member of his first band "The Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo" later renamed "The Animals".
It's nice to have a pair of 'tits' on youtube ! Other than that, "Between today, and yesterday' is a tremendous album ! I'd love to see the tv prog on the making of the album.. 5stars.
I've loved this song ever since I bought the album (Between Today and Yesterday) in 1974. There's other great songs on that LP if you care to discover them.
Saw Alan earlier this year in concert in Glasgow. Brought the house down. What a singer and witty as well. Had us eating out of his hands. What a talent. If he comes your way....don't miss him!
I'm old enough to remember him with The Animals but I always thought he was hog-tied by Eric Burdon. What a performer.
This has been a very refreshing experience. I always loved this song and so far, there have been very intelligent responses. People who are sympathetic to the situation, no pea-brained outbursts from uninformed dopes. Thanks to all!
pricey was organist with the animals eric burdon was always the lead singer this song is about workers fed up of being depressed and when you look at wat m p are doing now this song we should be marching now
It's about a march from Jarrow in north of England to London. The protesters marched to protest about the high levels of unemployment. Ironically in the US the govs of Hoover & Roosevelt tried to create employment by building dams and stuff. Too socialistic for us here in the UK! To add to levels of horrible irony Hitler increased germany's employment through arms. 55 millions lives later we in europe eventually started postwar economic boom thanks to US aid. Bummer for Eastern europe though
I'm from Scotland and I saw Allan belt this out last year in Glasgow. It's impossible not to get the same feeling he gets from singing about his area as we Scots get from listening to the Proclaimers when they do (I'm gonna be) 500 Miles. He is welcome back here anytime
Zooney, I agree entirely - still going as good as ever after many years! We are going to see him with The |Manfreds tomorrow!!!
If you would like to see more about Alan Price why not look at the fan forum - alanpricefansforum(dot)org(dot)uk. Lots of info, pics, reviews, lyrics and communicate with fans from all over the world.
This is one amazing song and Alan at 66 still belts it out live - currently on tour with the Manfreds. I was astonished at how good both he and The Manfreds were. Alan really does still sound as good as ever hitting all the high notes in the same key at the same tempo - flaming brilliant! What a class act.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hmmm...is this the same Alan Price who sang about the plight of the working class, and then, in 1992, said 'If Labour win the election, I'm leaving the country.'
And??? What is wrong with that. NuLabour mean nothing to the working class. Remember a third of the working class have always voted tory - especially in the North.
It was a very sad time for all the miners, those brave and hardworking men. It was terrible what they and their families had to suffer!
Alan Price made a wonderful tribute to them when he made this song for them. I think the video and song together echo the desperation and lost hope of the times.
You know they starved the miners back to work for LESS than they had been getting paid...SHAME ON THEM! I hope those responsible are getting theirs!
brill its amazing times still havent changed the workers are still getting screwed, not the mafia in parliament though pricey couldent have got this song more right

What an incredibly powerful song! Price captures the mood of his fellow Geordies when they marched on London in the late 1930's. But more importantly, the lyrics are equally appropriate in terms of today's social problems, world-wide. Thanks for posting!
