The Mabou hall has seen so many great stepdancers! Anyone looking for a great cultural vacation? If so come to Mabou, Cape Breton sometime during the summer and make sure to visit the Red Shoe for a great meal or a drink at the bar!
The fiddler, Douglas Cameron, has developed a wonderful hand in the past three years, his talent has matured very nicely - we've been watching him since he was 8 years old. He recently released his first CD. And of course, Margie Beaton remains a wonderful step-dancer and a terrific fiddler and piano player as well. I'm so glad this video has been enjoyed by so many, Cape Bretoners and non-Cape Bretoners alike! Original Poster.
I see Douglas's grandfather over on the right of the screen, no doubt waiting to call the square sets. We usually catch the Wednesday night dance at the Barn on our cherished annual trips to Cape Breton. The people are warm and wonderful, the scenery unsurpassed, and the music (everywhere) is brilliant. If only it weren't so far away!
With honest respect for your obviously loved tradition, I'd love to ask for anexplanation of what it is about this kind of dance and music that stirs you so? I want to get it... I'm from a pretty different part of the world!
it was a slower pace at the start because it was a strathspey, then it went into reels.. if someone's going to play for a cape breton stepdancer, they play a set of tunes similar.. no need to be scared if it will pick up pace.

Wonderful!
Margie Beatons is a beautiful stepdancer. My Mother's style (Margaree Forks) was somewhat similiar.
I'm 62 and still remember attending my first dance in Mabou at the age of 13-14.

was afraid this song would be too slow but, they picked it up toward the end. That lady is heck of a step-dancer. Love to see more.
