I totally agree with the last comment. However, if there is a resource for you to start writing and show if you have any depth, character, story, etc..., get to it for next year, because the craft matters a lot as well.
I applied to Boston University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and University at Buffalo. I got into all of those and am going to UB but switched my major to engineering. I realized I cared less about the story and more about figuring out how to do cool visual effects.
The reason that you would go to NYU is to learn all of these techniques and how to use the software, they are looking for people with creative potential. Also, the compositions of some of the shots are not stellar. This would be great if you were using it for a job interview at an animation/effects studio but perhaps something following more of a storyline would be best for college admissions.
Hmm, well if you are applying to the NYU Tisch Film and TV program, I am sorry to break it to you but it may not be what the committee is looking for. These effects are all very nice and well put together and they prove your competency in using the software, but they do not show anything in terms of writing or the ability to carry a plot.

It could be they changed it. As of last year it was 10 minutes.

I got waitlisted. I realized after it was too late that I should have used less graphics-intensive stuff and more in depth storyline.
