Check out Isaiah Ch. 6 and it will bring a whole new dimension to this song for you. This is where Isaiah has a vision of the Lord and is called to be a prophet. In the old testament yes we couldn't but thank God through the blood of Jesus we may enter into the Holy of Holies. =)

You're right, but I do believe the lyrics are actually referring to one's longing to be closer to God (in relationship, in spirit, in love, in purpose, etc), not necessarily a literal face-to-face meeting.
