SUGAR RAY won that round and the entire fight. How you're going let a man with less activity than you go the full 12? Hagler should had Ko'd him within 3 round. but, he was trying to dance with a dancer. smh
Secondly, Marvin Hagler in his prime was a scary man. I mean, he was a lefty who switched stances for God's sake. As if lefty boxers aren't tough enough already.
Before the fight I took a piece of paper and drew a line down the center. On one side I wrote down the reasons Hagler would win and on the other side I wrote down the reasons Leonard would win. My final conclusion, based on the premise that an All-Time Great fighter always beats a very good fighter (during their primes), was that Leonard would win. Leonard dominated the first half and the best Hagler could do was to fight him even in the second half. Jo Jo Guerra got the decision right!
well, it looks like u got your premise wrong to beging with becuz you got them backwards. To begin with, how can anyone say Hagler was in his prime when this was his last fite? that totally didnt make sense. Hagler's "prime" was in 1982 when Leonard was chickening out of their fite. and excuse me but Hagler "very good" when he aced prime Hitman in 3 to Leonard's 14?
"jo jo Guerra got it right" How ridiculous!
this is nothing short of propaganda for the mindless
Leonard stole every round he won with flurries and scoring combinations to close each round. Hagler would be the aggressor until the final 30 seconds and then Leonard would come to life with quick shots to a charging Haglers head.
HAGLER ROBBED. LEONARD WAS ONLY HUGGING AND RUNNING. THANKS TO HIM BLACK AMERICANS ARE NOW IMITSTING THAT STYLE INSTEAD OF HALER´S MACHISMO-RELENTLESS STYLE THAT MEXICANS, ASIANS AND RUSSIANS USE. BLAME IT ON COWARD LEONARD. I´M GLAD CAMACHO BEAT HIS ASS.
@bio2020 STF up, coward. That´why boxing is so boring nowadays. Hit and move is one thing; hit like a girl, run, hug for half the fight and never engage is another. Hagler is respected Leonard was KOed by Camacho once his" moving around " BS decreased. They were both past their prime in case you were going to say that.
Hagler had already lost a step and threw slower combos at this point in his career. I liked Ray better but Hagler in his prime would've busted Leonard up. He was just naturally bigger than Ray too. People forget how good of a boxer Marvelous once was, not just the slugger we saw the last five or six he fought.
Leonard won hands down, the dance contest. The judges were dance contest judges. The doctors? Well, they saw what there was of a fight. Leonard went to the hospital for an evaluation. Nobody else did.
Lets keep in mind SRL right here is about 60% of his former self from 1979-1982
Speed and snap on his punches is not close to the same and he is tiring much faster because of the 5 year layoff. Duran and Leonard went head to head for 15 rounds and against Hagler Ray is tired in the 5th round.
Disagree if its the Hagler from the Hearns fight he stops Ray. To me Hagler looks slow in that fight as well. Just Hearns fought a dumb fight.
Hagler won this fight, albeit, not his finest hour performance wise. He was a little past his prime in this fight. 3-4 years earlier, Leonard would have been stopped if Hagler had the same fire as he did against Hearns.
coming off of a 5 year layoff before fighting a bigger man in hagler-i wouldn't call that nitpicking at all-lol--he may have ducked the rematch though-just like people said floyd lost to castliio in the 1st fight--he immediately took the rematch and beat him again--hagler is still mad about this fight-he felt he won-i have watched this fight many times now, in slower versions to better study it--i gave it hagler and then switched--it's one of those fights that you'll have different opinions-lol
@allfiveny not true at all--bob arum is keeping manny away from floyd and lying to the public and you're obviously falling for it-he did the same with cotto and floyd-bob doesn't want manny to fight floyd and bob had floyd under his wing for years-he said he's the most skilled fighter he's ever seen-after floyd fought gatti, bob knew that this kid would never be beat-and he knows floyd will dominate manny who is afraid to prove he is clean with higher testing methods-don't be fooled man- srl was
Hagler and his team believed that hagler could fight anyone under any condition and win. Mistake. Leonard was scared to fight Hagler fair so he devised a plan to shorten the fight, enlarge the ring, change the gloves and never except a rematch. Hagler would destroy him in another match, all of boxing knows that.
when hagler fought thomas hearns it was a 12 round fight when hagler fought mugabi it was a 12 round fight, hagler wore the same gloves when he fought mugabi !! go and get your fuckin facts right you mug and just stop making excuses about hagler losing and when he did lose crybaby hagler fucked off to italy and stayed there !! leonard was just a superior boxer to him and was naturally smaller and boxed 1 time in 5 years and still beat hagler !! get use to the idea and stop fuckin wingeing !!
Ray was scared to fight Hagler again, his team also was scared of Hagler. Leonard won by running and jabbing. People respect Hagler for what he accomplished in boxing over Leonard. I was there live for this and Hagler's punches were so much more powerful when compared to Leonard's.
@clearcombat : People respect BOTH fighters. There are several ways to win a boxing match.
A. Knock the guy out
B. Referee stops the fight in your favor
C. You hit your opponent more than he hits you.
D. Your opponent.
If Hagler has ever been knocked out at ALL it hasn't happened often and Ray Leonard was never known for knock out power. The only logical way to beat Marvin Hagler is to out punch him. Period. That is what Ray Leonard did. Simple as that.
Cont: I meant your opponent "QUITS" for (D). It would have been pretty idiotic for Ray Leonard to fight Marvin Hagler on HIS terms, HIS way, and to HIS strengths. In the real world, you do what works to get the job done. All Hagler really had to do was let Leonard come to him and counter punch. Instead he got caught up in his own ego because he wanted to beat Leonard so bad that he willingly gave up every advantage he had over Leonard.
Finish: HE conceded to a 20X20 foot ring, HE conceded to tabbed gloves, HE conceded to 12 rounds instead of 15, HE conceded to giving Leonard the first 4 rounds by fighting orthodox instead of southpaw, HE conceded to foolishly chase Leonard all over the ring, and HE conceded to fighting in Las Vegas were he has never gotten a fair shake in judging. Ray Leonard didn't screw Marvin Hagler. Las Vegas judges didn't screw Marvin Magler. MARVIN HAGLER screwed Marvin Hagler.
@D2Kprime but haglers fights before this against mugabi and hearns are 12 round fights the wbc which this fight was for stopped sanctioning 15 round fights in 1984 only because he lost he compained about lol hagler drew 1 fight in las vegas thats it all the others besides leonards he won !! hagler underestimated leonards skill and endurance and there were plenty of times leonard fought against the ropes and hagler could not stop him !! leonard was a natural welter hagler a middleweight lol
@BoxingFly01 : 'Tabbed' gloves are constructed in a way where you cannot move your thumb. The thumb part is sort of attached. It takes a little bit away from power-punches. If you watch the fight you can hear the commentators talking about it. I'm not sure but I don't think they are used anymore.
@Dactuck I love boxing also, but mma fighters are a blend of many combat arts. There have been incredible fights in mma also. Benny the Jet has had a few, Chuck Liddell, Randy Coutore, GSP and list goes on and on.
Boxing is just different. So far as punches, boxers are the best, in fact they are being sought out to help the mma fighters who have a bad habit of keeping their hands down, chins up and don't move their heads enough. MMA does have a long way to go, but it is off to a good start.
Leonard won this fight.Hagler was a baby after it was over.He couldn`t stand the fact that he was outmatched.Dempsey never complained when he lost to Tunney(twice)even know he knocked him down and the long count took effect he just went on.
And of course all of you Leonard haters are gonna say "losing to Norris was Rays first legitimate fight" just because he lost, but make excuses for why Hagler lost to a smaller fighter who had only fought once in 5 years, and who was close in age? Leonard beat every fighter who was a champ in his era.
who else was there? Duran was a past him prime over the weight lightweight. Hagler was shot. Benitez was nothing to beging with. Hearns was the only decent fighter he'd met and I was very unimpressed seeing how he coped with a moving target which is why i felt Norris-Rl would be a mismatch. Leonard is a BUM and waste of a human life
All throughout these posts I'm reading Hagler landed the cleaner punches. Keep it real! Like @ 1:16 (1:40 on the screen) Hagler hitting clean air. @ 1:57 Leonard lands solid shot to the head and body. @ 2:52 Leonard throws a flurry of solid shots.
The thing about Hagler is he beat up dangerous and tough middleweights like Hamsho, Roldan, Watts, Monroe, Brisco, Antuofermo, Mugabi and Hearns, but had a tough time against boxers like Duran and Leonard which is perplexing.
I think Hagler fed off the aggresiveness of guys more and he became more assertive, but against boxers he kind of waltzed around. In any event, I think he still won this fight,
They said Leonard won, PSH! There is a reason this fight was so controversial, cause Hagler really won
Count the punches. Leonard doesn't land nearly as much as Hagler.
Hagler v Leonard Compbox numbers for the fight have them nearly dead even. The difference lies in Hagler throwing CLEAN* & effective punches. But the judges instead went with Leonard's cowardly flurries that didn't land well.
My guess is that the judges were captivated by this 'Fight of the Decade' & went on gut instincts.
I know, but i'm arguing for Hagler here lol. I did say "have them nearly dead even" that's a stretch Hagler's had 15-20 punches less.
BUT landing punches isn't the only thing. Defense, landing effective & clean punches. Hagler in my eyes landed more clean punches, he didn't throw flurries like Leonard, Hagler instead picked his shots.
Both went in trying to impress the judges differently & Leonard always a favorite of judges even tho most punches weren't 1/2 as effective or clean as Hagler's
Personally I cant really find a winner here because neither got hurt. If just one was hurt, or at least hit with a few real hard punches, it would be alot easier to pick the winner.
Oh they hurt one another, a great boxer never shows pain, these are 2 of the best.
Earlier rounds go to Leonard, Middle rounds are even, and later is where the controversy really begins.
Personally, I blame the judges 100%. They knew this "Fight of the Decade" couldn't end up a Draw. It was a captivating fight, and they went with Compubox, which is an insult to both fighters.
I agree about the draw somewhat. I was a big Hagler fan back then & it's either a draw or SD in Hagler's favor.
I don't think you're getting what I'm saying. It always hurts, it's a painful career. 2 boxers who don't want the other to have a tactical lead, or advantage. Not to mention they both have great chins and heart. Which isn't so much the ability to absorb pain as it is not to let it affect you.
But in the 8th-9th there is some damage done, check it close.
But if you mean type pain to cause a KO, no where near it. Both fighters were near or at the end of their career, SRL back from 2 years off.
@BringerOfTheTruth leonard admitted in the 4 kings by george kimball that he was severely rocked in one round. but hagler didnt notice and leonard played it easy in the next round to recover. there was a strong possibility had hagler noticed he would've agressively floored leonard
@POTATER1228 it was the 5 th round he was hurt i don't call the 6 th round playing it easy as you can see here he more than once held his own in this round against bigger stronger more natural middleweight ! leonard deserved the victory ! leonard had to much inteligence for hagler and simply outboxed him !
"Count the punches. Leonard doesn't land nearly as much as Hagler." i suggest you make up your mind as to wether hagler threw more or less punches, before you start discussing....
My mind is made, you're just a troll. You didn't consider I forgot to type the word "power" before punches. Because one sentence after that quote I say Compubox numbers had them nearly drawn, with SRL landing a bit more.
It's also evident that Hagler's punchers were cleaner than SRL showboating uppercuts, and flurries. SRL tried to steal the show with all that crap, and it got him the judges score.
The fight was incredible, Hagler's most likely the true winner. As I'd call it for Hagler by SD
@BringerOfTheTruth 20 more, the whole fight. Thats over the entire length, so those 20 could have come from 2 or even 1 round. you judge a fight by rounds, not by it's entirety. That's why we have the Queensbury rules for 90+ years now
@tftmc so you think leonard never won on boxing skill lol just look at this round and see leonard totally outboxing him and making hagler look ponderous ! i think you really need to know what the art of boxing is ! is it called the sweet science and hitting without getting hit ! leonard outboxed hagler period
@sweetassugar69 It's not just about landing punches. It can be if one is more dominate, but that isn't the case here. NYS Commission names 10 different standards to judging a fight, NYS' is the standard.
Important are the quality of punches, Hagler was throwing cleaner, harder & accurately. While SRL was flurrying punches of which 1/4 landed clean & just throwing flurries that don't land clean should count for nothing.
The judges were watching, not judging it & they went to unreliable compubox
On top of that Compubox sucks, but lets say it's reliable, what does it mean for the fight?
Compbox says SRL landed only 20 more punches the whole fight. 20 punches could have come in 1 round. Judging is done by rounds, not the whole fight as I'm sure you know.
More importantly & it's very simple. SRL landed "bitch" punches, Hagler landed power punches. A clean hook, etc is worth 5x more than a jab or a short power punch. If you say SRL landed more power punches you're either crazy or blind.
@tftmc i don't go on compubox i judge on what i see ! the score are handed in every round after the bell ! what i saw was leonard winning the the 1st 3 rounds in 4 with the 3rd a drawn round ! 6 th round leonard 7 th and 8th for hagler 9th a drawn round 10 and 11 leonard and 12 hagelr in my book if you tally up the rounds leonard won 6 rounds to haglers 4 with 2 even ! leonard deserved the victory as most judges saw it ! period
How come he wasnt able to make a speedster like Norris look ponderous?
Sorry to burst your bubble but let us never forget the words of Tim Ryan "Sugar Ray said he was counting on the slowness of hagler. he said Marvin had lost a lot of speed". Maybe that's what you mean by "ponderous"?
While i believe hagler won the fight by about a couple of points, the rumor back then before the fight started was hagler would KO leonard before the 4th round.
Well Leonard did have the loose retina, surgery to fix it, was "retired" for 3 years & everyone also thought he'd be blind by the 3rd, lol
But SRL had a better managing setup, better trainers, Hagler was kinda stuck where he was he still had the natural talent and plenty of polished skill.
Hagler did win the mid to later rounds no doubt. I still think he won just based on landing clean effective punches. 1-2 punches, No fancy bs, no showboating just clean punches & you'd think that's enough.
I paid $900 for a ring side seat that night at Caesars Palace and I definitely think the outcome of this fight was pure sh*t. The judges couldn't judge a fuckin elementary school talent contest. Hagler beat Sugar's azz.
lol..u think he's i piece of shit, i think he's one of the best ever...difference of opinion...i do think this fight was overraterd...hagler vs hearns was way better....
Leonard has no power??!!....u dont know shit about boxing...he is one the hardest hitters ever...go watch mma cuz u dont know shit bout boxin...step into a ring and see how u feelin/lookin after 6 rounds of war.....
Can remember going to the Movie theater at the Odeon in Leeds England. They had beemed via saterlight.
Man I'm one of Hagler's biggest fans. He's my all time Favorite fighter! But Leonard did a good number on him here.He Boxed and didn't get into a fight with Marvin.Very Smart thing to do.
But to me Hagler will always be the winner here in the manner he left the sport. The sport mist him more than he mist the sport i think.
Leonard went on a bit to long and got batterd buy Norris and Comacho!!
Im so glad Hagler didnt go out the way Leonard did. How do his fans sleep at night knowing the way he lost to a 3-1 underdog and then getting stopped by camacho
you still here piggy boy !! you still cannot accept leonard beat hagler fair and square lol guess what he did and i fuckin love watching this !! lol good night and god bless you piggybuy
i can just imagine the look on your face the night Norris was beating up on rl.
I knew someone would come along and expose the fraud. it was just a matter of time be4 he ran out of geezers I relics on the senior's tour.
my man didnt just beat him, he embarassed him, humiliated him, retired him until he got his nerve back 6 years later and even then was never the same as Camacho worked him over. Norris destroyed him mentally and broke his spirit during the fight. RL got ko'd and I laughed
Always comparing the imposter to the real thing. Ali fought great at 33 (thrilla in Manilla). I suppose the problem is that the expectations for SRl were set so high that everyone including myself thought he couldnt lose so the consensus was that he'd take out Norris if he really were as great as advertised but it turned out he wasnt
@Piglatinsuperstar You say you thought he couldn't lose, but you said you made a lot of money, because you knew Leonard would lose to Norris. Which one is it? If Leonard beat Hagler like this, then Norris really would've killed em.
I knew ray couldnt handle speed in an opponent so when he signed to meet Norris In Dec. 1990, I knew he had signed his death warrant. Despite what many people think, his experience was actually very limited and despite the odds that favored him, Ray was woefully ill prepared to meet with someone of TN's speed, hence the gross mismatch
and I never said I thought Leonard couldnt lose. I told people after the Hagler fight that a young fast up and comer could beat him and with no problem. YOU and yours said he couldnt lose. I just said ray hadnt lost in 11 years and that was a true statement but he had never faced anyone special like Norris, just a bunch of slow dead on their feet plodders
@kingq01 so what we have to conclude is that RL was overrated from the start otherwise even if Ray wasnt peak, he still shouldve been good enough to easily beat a young Norris. Instead he got humiliated and beat becuz he couldnt handle the speed, just like I said. have I ever been wrong before?
@Piglatinsuperstar How could ray be overrated, you sadass? He beat the best - Duran, Hagler, Hearns and Benitez. And the best you can come back with is Norris? Get a f*ckin life you sad dildo.
u mean "what was left of hagler", sloppy leftoverz. benitez was junk. and Tommy Hearns was 3 yrs from his peak, when Hagler got to him. its like comparing Joe Louis from the first N second Schmeling fight. so it was really Hagler who fought the best
Ray look good w ham N eggerz & sloppy leftoverz, but vs slick N quick types Norris N nunn N Jonez, well u saw what happened w Norris! HAHA, pitiful. Sugar just dont have da experience 2 cope. took him 11 jus to stop Bondz :(
A younger Hagler would have quit? A young Hagler was one of the most vicious and determined fighters I ever saw. He also had incredible boxing skills that are often overlooked. He was one of the best counter-punchers (if not the best) of his era. Go back and watch some of his early fights, he was scary.
A young Leonard was also a tremendous fighter who used his speed (hands AND feet) to dictate fights and wear his opponents down.
This fight ten years earlier would have been amazing.
I know Marvin wouldn't have quit. I was just winding up Piglatin.
Fact is ten year earlier Hagler was near his peak and far BIGGER than Ray. He would probably have won at middleweight. I don't hear anyone suggesting Hagler should have lost a few pound and made the bout at a lower weight, where Ray would have certainly won.
Duran wasnt moving tho. He was stationary throughout. Not only that but Hagler's next opponent Roldan gave him a tougher fight. So did Antuofuermo who took him to 15 rd draw with bronchitis in defense of his title. Vito is a brawler all the way, not a boxer. No one goes around claiming Hagler couldnt handle his type. at first yes, claiming Hagler couldnt stand pressure. These are the myths that persist even after Hagler slaughtered Hamsho.
Let's see..Marvin holds more title defenses, beat Hearns in less than 1/4 the time Ray did against a bigger, faster, better, stronger version.
Also, Marvin held p4p title 4 consec years, one of them winning all 150 votes for 1st place, the other, 147-far more than the one time ray won his nomination. This means the experts agree with me.
let's face it, if RAY thought he could beat marv, he wouldve come right out and done it first chance he got in 82. he didnt. he waited 5 years
You are watching a shopworn and rapidly aging great champion here. Hagler was at least two years older than his listed age. His prime was from 1977-1984. He was a brawler after that, and an increasingly slow one. He still won this fight, but it wasn't the prime Hagler Leonard faced - and that was by design. Hagler should have retired after Mugabi. You could see then that he didn't have it anymore.
you are talking out your arse! hagler was active as a fighter ! hagler drew with vito, lost to willie monroe struggled with duran who is a lightweight ! hagler never ever fought anyone with leonard skill and it showed in this fight full stop ! leonard was a better boxer !!
Neither fighter was near their prime. Hagler looks very slow, and Leonard doesn't have near the same hand speed he had. This fight meant nothing - both fighters were past their prime.
I think style wise, in their prime, Hagler would have had a really hard time. Leonard was just incredibly fast, it would have been a tough fight.
skill? his only skill was picking fights with the utmost of care-or else!!
Take the case of Terry Norris, a young upcoming boxer. Leonard simply didnt know what to do with him. Terry put so much pressure on, it made Ray forget everything he knew about boxing.
Ray had never faced anyone so versatile, so fast, so slippery. hagler was much better at dealing with boxers like Hearns who outboxed leonard. Look how long it took for Ray to beat Tommy. Now look how fast hagler got the job done
By the time Ray fought Norris he was years past his best. Was Norris a sad case picking on an old man.
Ray Leonard was the best boxer of his generation beating Hagler (yes he did), Hearns, Duran and Benitez amongst others. Fact is Hagler was naturally bigger than all of those men. Pound for pound they would all have beaten him
You're full of shit been reading too much bullshit you beginning to believe it. You werent even AROUND for the Norris-srl masscre. Leonard picked Norris to fight, not vice versa! It was Terry's title at stake, not Leonard's. So what you blaming Terry for?? Besides, it is really Leonard picking on old men. Dont you remember Ray working Hagler's fights for HBO? He waits 5 full years before proclaiming "I can beat Hagler!". Why didnt he say it in 81? 82? 83? 84? When Marvin could REALLY fight?
You write too much bullshit and are starting to believe it. Doesn't matter who picked who Leonard was well past his best. As for Hagler being old, of course he was but so was Sugar Ray. Hagler was still much bigger and much stronger and couldn't lay a glove on the much smaller man.
A younger Ray Leonard would have knocked him out, or Hagler might have quit. Of course you'll say he'd never have quit but Leonard retired him so I suppose he did quit. Anyway you'd have said the same about Duran.
Ray unbeaten in 11 years, still dancing, BIG favorite (but that is only brought up wen mentioning Hagler)
5 div champions dont suddenly become shot for no reason,,they become exposed by the young. Enter Terry Norris
If younger Ray take Marvin, he knock would him out? He had ALOT of chances so why didnt he? If he felt he could knock him out he'd taken the fight along time ago and we wouldnt have to wait 5 years. that's bullshit. Your man just too chicken to fight anyone but old men
Champions don't become shot for no reason they become exposed by more skillful fighters. Enter Ray Leonard.
On a more general note WHY should Sugar Ray move up the weights to challege Marvin in 81 etc when there were alot of natural weight great fights out there. Fact is when he did move up the weights he won. You cannot be serious criticizing the man, surely?
How is Ray going to expose Marvin by calling him out right before he retires? That's not exposing a fighter, it's fighting a shell.
Ray only TALKS ABOUT fighting Hagler but he dont do it. on HBO Hamsho 1 he say wanted Hagler then he chicken out by the end. next year he bring Hagler into a boxing ring and guess what? he chicken out again. Then he came back 3 yrs for a fight and he chicken out AGAIN. That is his REOCRD. Hagler say fuck this cunt, he will wait till I am half dead b4 it happen
what do you mean I am not serious? I have all the facts on my side. I have EVERYTHING going for me. That is why I leave people defensless. I even have evidence from YOUTUBE to embarass pricks like u
rd 6, Tim Ryan: "Sugar Ray said Marvin had lost a lot of speed and was counting on the slowness of hagler"
You see? From horse's mouth, that's what the fight come down to. It didnt have anything to do with how good Ray was, he had to rely on Hagler to slow down. That cheapened it
Leonard was far from his prime in this fight as well and went up in weight to fight him, after a long lay off! Leonard took no tune up fight and still rose to the occasion. I thought Leonard won the fight, but people will argue the decision for a long time to come.
what are you posting everyone that remotely disagrees with you, you little spoiled mama's boy?
Well, it's been fun....but if you keep insisting on getting the last word in and crying and trying to justify your ridiculous cloistered mama's boy ways, I have to block and report you.

don't mind your input, because I take it with a grain of salt. Asking if I'm a homo, when you obviously have a hard on for Ric Flare.
Had no idea Hagler was a wife beater, and unless you know for a fact, I'd keep my opinions to myself, especially something that personal.
Leonard ran around the ring, throwing flurries at the end to "steal" the round. Hagler was blue collar, tough as nails. Leonard didn't want to mix it up with him. This, sir is a fact.
Hagler didnt have to take this fight, he knew fully what he was up against. You act like he didnt watch the Roberto Duran fight. SRL took Haglers Best shots and made him miss multiple times and look like a fool. Not only did he out point him he out boxed him. Hagler was way too over confident which is shown in the first rounds when he tried to go in orthadox and failed. Round 9 is a testimate of SRL Brilliance in the ring.
I say Leonard was a pussycat, that ran, instead of taking the fight to a champion to BE the new champion. Took his best shots?! okay....umm....if you say so.
I say he was a egomaniac that should've fought Hagler the first time around, but waited until Hagler was putting the SRL legacy to rest. Then he comes out of "retirment" to run around the ring like a pansy for 12 rounds. Hagler said it: you want my belt you have to come take it and fight me.
Maybe you should watch round 9 where Hagler traps leonard, and Leonard Turns the Tide. Hagler could of easily cut off the ring and forced combat. lol you need to check the punch cards son. He wasnt just running, he connected way more than hagler did. Blame hagler for his misfires. Youd be an idiot to stand there like herns and get destroyed. Sugars smart he knew he couldnt match power so he out boxed Hagler plain and simple. This is Boxing son, not get your brains bashed in.
maybe you should stop trying to get the last word in like a little spoiled, mama's boy brat.
My OPINION is Leonard came to "out point" Hagler by flashes of flurries, he did not come to fight. He was no warrior in the sense that Hagler and Duran were.
Okay, SON. Go have mommy tuck you in....I think you bumped your head.
There really is no need to keep posting directly to me, brat.
Actually, Leonard was floored for the first time as a pro against Kevin Howard in 1984, which prompted him to retire again until Hagler in '87. He was also floored in his 1988 fight against Don LaLonde. Seems that from '84 onward, his chin - one of the most solid in boxing from 1977 to '82, began to desert him.
You saw it with Foreman as you see it with Hagler. A stronger brawler gets schooled in the fundamentals of boxing by a more agile and strong enough opponent. Sugar Ray won straight up ...
pb, what's happening man? I see some people here came out and started trouble. You want me to make an example of these guys? Just tell me when and I'll humble them!
That was no where near the Ray Leonard that fans were used to. He was a shell of himself when he fought Hector Camacho a prime Ray Leonard would have KO'd Camacho.
SUGAR RAY won that round and the entire fight. How you're going let a man with less activity than you go the full 12? Hagler should had Ko'd him within 3 round. but, he was trying to dance with a dancer. smh

First off, I think Leonard wins this.
Secondly, Marvin Hagler in his prime was a scary man. I mean, he was a lefty who switched stances for God's sake. As if lefty boxers aren't tough enough already.
pianoman576 5 months ago
Before the fight I took a piece of paper and drew a line down the center. On one side I wrote down the reasons Hagler would win and on the other side I wrote down the reasons Leonard would win. My final conclusion, based on the premise that an All-Time Great fighter always beats a very good fighter (during their primes), was that Leonard would win. Leonard dominated the first half and the best Hagler could do was to fight him even in the second half. Jo Jo Guerra got the decision right!
celticbanner18 6 months ago
@celticbanner18
well, it looks like u got your premise wrong to beging with becuz you got them backwards.
"jo jo Guerra got it right" How ridiculous!
this is nothing short of propaganda for the mindless

condemorch 7 months ago
Leonard stole every round he won with flurries and scoring combinations to close each round. Hagler would be the aggressor until the final 30 seconds and then Leonard would come to life with quick shots to a charging Haglers head.

budfr 8 months ago
@budfr Moron. The goal of any great boxer is to hit your opponent fast and hard, and making your opponent miss his punches.
Strike and move. Hagler fought like a neanderthal, his style is to go blow for blow, receiving hits and hoping to dish out big hits.
bio2020 4 months ago
@bio2020 STF up, coward. That´why boxing is so boring nowadays. Hit and move is one thing; hit like a girl, run, hug for half the fight and never engage is another. Hagler is respected Leonard was KOed by Camacho once his" moving around " BS decreased. They were both past their prime in case you were going to say that.

leonard took away hagler's power with the rib shots they really hurt believe me..those combos
gasixteenb11 9 months ago
Hagler had already lost a step and threw slower combos at this point in his career. I liked Ray better but Hagler in his prime would've busted Leonard up. He was just naturally bigger than Ray too. People forget how good of a boxer Marvelous once was, not just the slugger we saw the last five or six he fought.

1980 SRL would knockout the 1987 SRL version inside 5 rounds
Thats how big a difference it is. 5 year layoff
To bad you can't fight your younger self
bscottdp 1 year ago
Lets keep in mind SRL right here is about 60% of his former self from 1979-1982
Speed and snap on his punches is not close to the same and he is tiring much faster because of the 5 year layoff. Duran and Leonard went head to head for 15 rounds and against Hagler Ray is tired in the 5th round.
Disagree if its the Hagler from the Hearns fight he stops Ray. To me Hagler looks slow in that fight as well. Just Hearns fought a dumb fight.
Duran went 15 rounds with 83 Hagler. So could Ray
bscottdp 1 year ago

Hagler and his team believed that hagler could fight anyone under any condition and win. Mistake. Leonard was scared to fight Hagler fair so he devised a plan to shorten the fight, enlarge the ring, change the gloves and never except a rematch. Hagler would destroy him in another match, all of boxing knows that.
clearcombat 1 year ago
when hagler fought thomas hearns it was a 12 round fight when hagler fought mugabi it was a 12 round fight, hagler wore the same gloves when he fought mugabi !! go and get your fuckin facts right you mug and just stop making excuses about hagler losing and when he did lose crybaby hagler fucked off to italy and stayed there !! leonard was just a superior boxer to him and was naturally smaller and boxed 1 time in 5 years and still beat hagler !! get use to the idea and stop fuckin wingeing !!
sweetassugar69 1 year ago
Ray was scared to fight Hagler again, his team also was scared of Hagler. Leonard won by running and jabbing. People respect Hagler for what he accomplished in boxing over Leonard. I was there live for this and Hagler's punches were so much more powerful when compared to Leonard's.
clearcombat 1 year ago
@clearcombat : People respect BOTH fighters. There are several ways to win a boxing match.
A. Knock the guy out
B. Referee stops the fight in your favor
C. You hit your opponent more than he hits you.
D. Your opponent.
If Hagler has ever been knocked out at ALL it hasn't happened often and Ray Leonard was never known for knock out power. The only logical way to beat Marvin Hagler is to out punch him. Period. That is what Ray Leonard did. Simple as that.
D2Kprime 1 year ago
Cont: I meant your opponent "QUITS" for (D). It would have been pretty idiotic for Ray Leonard to fight Marvin Hagler on HIS terms, HIS way, and to HIS strengths. In the real world, you do what works to get the job done. All Hagler really had to do was let Leonard come to him and counter punch. Instead he got caught up in his own ego because he wanted to beat Leonard so bad that he willingly gave up every advantage he had over Leonard.
D2Kprime 1 year ago
Finish: HE conceded to a 20X20 foot ring, HE conceded to tabbed gloves, HE conceded to 12 rounds instead of 15, HE conceded to giving Leonard the first 4 rounds by fighting orthodox instead of southpaw, HE conceded to foolishly chase Leonard all over the ring, and HE conceded to fighting in Las Vegas were he has never gotten a fair shake in judging. Ray Leonard didn't screw Marvin Hagler. Las Vegas judges didn't screw Marvin Magler. MARVIN HAGLER screwed Marvin Hagler.

what do you mean by tabbed gloves?
BoxingFly01 5 months ago

In any event, I think he still won this fight,
ballisticbliss 2 years ago 8
They said Leonard won, PSH! There is a reason this fight was so controversial, cause Hagler really won
Count the punches. Leonard doesn't land nearly as much as Hagler.
Hagler v Leonard Compbox numbers for the fight have them nearly dead even. The difference lies in Hagler throwing CLEAN* & effective punches. But the judges instead went with Leonard's cowardly flurries that didn't land well.
My guess is that the judges were captivated by this 'Fight of the Decade' & went on gut instincts.
tftmc 2 years ago
According to punchstat, Leonard landed more punches. look it up.
BringerOfTheTruth 2 years ago
I know, but i'm arguing for Hagler here lol. I did say "have them nearly dead even" that's a stretch Hagler's had 15-20 punches less.
BUT landing punches isn't the only thing. Defense, landing effective & clean punches. Hagler in my eyes landed more clean punches, he didn't throw flurries like Leonard, Hagler instead picked his shots.
Both went in trying to impress the judges differently & Leonard always a favorite of judges even tho most punches weren't 1/2 as effective or clean as Hagler's
tftmc 2 years ago
Personally I cant really find a winner here because neither got hurt. If just one was hurt, or at least hit with a few real hard punches, it would be alot easier to pick the winner.
BringerOfTheTruth 2 years ago
Oh they hurt one another, a great boxer never shows pain, these are 2 of the best.
Earlier rounds go to Leonard, Middle rounds are even, and later is where the controversy really begins.
Personally, I blame the judges 100%. They knew this "Fight of the Decade" couldn't end up a Draw. It was a captivating fight, and they went with Compubox, which is an insult to both fighters.
I agree about the draw somewhat. I was a big Hagler fan back then & it's either a draw or SD in Hagler's favor.
tftmc 2 years ago
They never wobbled or where down. So they were never really hurt.
BringerOfTheTruth 2 years ago
I don't think you're getting what I'm saying. It always hurts, it's a painful career. 2 boxers who don't want the other to have a tactical lead, or advantage. Not to mention they both have great chins and heart. Which isn't so much the ability to absorb pain as it is not to let it affect you.
But in the 8th-9th there is some damage done, check it close.
But if you mean type pain to cause a KO, no where near it. Both fighters were near or at the end of their career, SRL back from 2 years off.
tftmc 2 years ago
@BringerOfTheTruth leonard admitted in the 4 kings by george kimball that he was severely rocked in one round. but hagler didnt notice and leonard played it easy in the next round to recover. there was a strong possibility had hagler noticed he would've agressively floored leonard
POTATER1228 2 years ago
@POTATER1228 it was the 5 th round he was hurt i don't call the 6 th round playing it easy as you can see here he more than once held his own in this round against bigger stronger more natural middleweight ! leonard deserved the victory ! leonard had to much inteligence for hagler and simply outboxed him !
sweetassugar69 1 year ago
"Count the punches. Leonard doesn't land nearly as much as Hagler." i suggest you make up your mind as to wether hagler threw more or less punches, before you start discussing....
petter8999 2 years ago
My mind is made, you're just a troll. You didn't consider I forgot to type the word "power" before punches. Because one sentence after that quote I say Compubox numbers had them nearly drawn, with SRL landing a bit more.
It's also evident that Hagler's punchers were cleaner than SRL showboating uppercuts, and flurries. SRL tried to steal the show with all that crap, and it got him the judges score.
The fight was incredible, Hagler's most likely the true winner. As I'd call it for Hagler by SD
tftmc 2 years ago
@BringerOfTheTruth 20 more, the whole fight. Thats over the entire length, so those 20 could have come from 2 or even 1 round. you judge a fight by rounds, not by it's entirety. That's why we have the Queensbury rules for 90+ years now
tftmc 1 year ago
Err I take that back, Leonard did land more, but not my much.
I think Leonard won on showmanship, not boxing skill.
tftmc 2 years ago
@tftmc so you think leonard never won on boxing skill lol just look at this round and see leonard totally outboxing him and making hagler look ponderous ! i think you really need to know what the art of boxing is ! is it called the sweet science and hitting without getting hit ! leonard outboxed hagler period
sweetassugar69 1 year ago
@sweetassugar69 It's not just about landing punches. It can be if one is more dominate, but that isn't the case here. NYS Commission names 10 different standards to judging a fight, NYS' is the standard.
Important are the quality of punches, Hagler was throwing cleaner, harder & accurately. While SRL was flurrying punches of which 1/4 landed clean & just throwing flurries that don't land clean should count for nothing.
The judges were watching, not judging it & they went to unreliable compubox
tftmc 1 year ago
On top of that Compubox sucks, but lets say it's reliable, what does it mean for the fight?
Compbox says SRL landed only 20 more punches the whole fight. 20 punches could have come in 1 round. Judging is done by rounds, not the whole fight as I'm sure you know.
More importantly & it's very simple. SRL landed "bitch" punches, Hagler landed power punches. A clean hook, etc is worth 5x more than a jab or a short power punch. If you say SRL landed more power punches you're either crazy or blind.
tftmc 1 year ago
@tftmc i don't go on compubox i judge on what i see ! the score are handed in every round after the bell ! what i saw was leonard winning the the 1st 3 rounds in 4 with the 3rd a drawn round ! 6 th round leonard 7 th and 8th for hagler 9th a drawn round 10 and 11 leonard and 12 hagelr in my book if you tally up the rounds leonard won 6 rounds to haglers 4 with 2 even ! leonard deserved the victory as most judges saw it ! period
sweetassugar69 1 year ago
@sweetassugar69
Piglatinsuperstar 1 year ago
While i believe hagler won the fight by about a couple of points, the rumor back then before the fight started was hagler would KO leonard before the 4th round.
Win or Lose..leonard proved the audience wrong!
Tusc9969 2 years ago

Piglatinsuperstar 1 year ago
@Piglatinsuperstar You say you thought he couldn't lose, but you said you made a lot of money, because you knew Leonard would lose to Norris. Which one is it? If Leonard beat Hagler like this, then Norris really would've killed em.
kingq01 1 year ago
@kingq01
Piglatinsuperstar 1 year ago
@kingq01
and I never said I thought Leonard couldnt lose.

@Piglatinsuperstar What the f*ck has 9 time loser Terry Norris got to do with any ot this?

@kingq01 so what we have to conclude is that RL was overrated from the start otherwise even if Ray wasnt peak, he still shouldve been good enough to easily beat a young Norris. Instead he got humiliated and beat becuz he couldnt handle the speed, just like I said. have I ever been wrong before?
Piglatinsuperstar 1 year ago

Why Hagler was so desparate to fight a welterweight like Leonard back in '82 I will never know. No middleweight should be calling out welterweights.
roundtree49 2 years ago
A younger Hagler would have quit? A young Hagler was one of the most vicious and determined fighters I ever saw. He also had incredible boxing skills that are often overlooked. He was one of the best counter-punchers (if not the best) of his era. Go back and watch some of his early fights, he was scary.
A young Leonard was also a tremendous fighter who used his speed (hands AND feet) to dictate fights and wear his opponents down.
This fight ten years earlier would have been amazing.
mikecf1 2 years ago
I know Marvin wouldn't have quit. I was just winding up Piglatin.
Fact is ten year earlier Hagler was near his peak and far BIGGER than Ray. He would probably have won at middleweight. I don't hear anyone suggesting Hagler should have lost a few pound and made the bout at a lower weight, where Ray would have certainly won.
Pactrolus 2 years ago

This means the experts agree with me.
let's face it, if RAY thought he could beat marv, he wouldve come right out and done it first chance he got in 82. he didnt. he waited 5 years
Piglatinsuperstar 2 years ago
i agree hagler won this fight pacquiao is my favorite fighter and 2nd is the great marvelous marvin hagler
AliRidah619 2 years ago
HAGLAR won this fight.
sanddmann03 2 years ago
Hagler was better than Leonard. Leonard was a sad case picking on old men
Piglatinsuperstar 2 years ago
You are watching a shopworn and rapidly aging great champion here. Hagler was at least two years older than his listed age. His prime was from 1977-1984. He was a brawler after that, and an increasingly slow one. He still won this fight, but it wasn't the prime Hagler Leonard faced - and that was by design. Hagler should have retired after Mugabi. You could see then that he didn't have it anymore.
dissimulate666 2 years ago
you are talking out your arse! hagler was active as a fighter ! hagler drew with vito, lost to willie monroe struggled with duran who is a lightweight ! hagler never ever fought anyone with leonard skill and it showed in this fight full stop ! leonard was a better boxer !!
sweetassugar69 2 years ago
Neither fighter was near their prime. Hagler looks very slow, and Leonard doesn't have near the same hand speed he had. This fight meant nothing - both fighters were past their prime.
I think style wise, in their prime, Hagler would have had a really hard time. Leonard was just incredibly fast, it would have been a tough fight.
TA152H01 2 years ago
skill? his only skill was picking fights with the utmost of care-or else!!
Piglatinsuperstar 2 years ago
By the time Ray fought Norris he was years past his best. Was Norris a sad case picking on an old man.
Ray Leonard was the best boxer of his generation beating Hagler (yes he did), Hearns, Duran and Benitez amongst others. Fact is Hagler was naturally bigger than all of those men. Pound for pound they would all have beaten him
Pactrolus 2 years ago
You're full of shit been reading too much bullshit you beginning to believe it. You werent even AROUND for the Norris-srl masscre. Leonard picked Norris to fight, not vice versa! It was Terry's title at stake, not Leonard's. So what you blaming Terry for?? Besides, it is really Leonard picking on old men. Dont you remember Ray working Hagler's fights for HBO? He waits 5 full years before proclaiming "I can beat Hagler!". Why didnt he say it in 81? 82? 83? 84? When Marvin could REALLY fight?
Piglatinsuperstar 2 years ago
You write too much bullshit and are starting to believe it. Doesn't matter who picked who Leonard was well past his best. As for Hagler being old, of course he was but so was Sugar Ray. Hagler was still much bigger and much stronger and couldn't lay a glove on the much smaller man.
A younger Ray Leonard would have knocked him out, or Hagler might have quit. Of course you'll say he'd never have quit but Leonard retired him so I suppose he did quit. Anyway you'd have said the same about Duran.
Pactrolus 2 years ago
Ray unbeaten in 11 years, still dancing, BIG favorite (but that is only brought up wen mentioning Hagler)
5 div champions dont suddenly become shot for no reason,,they become exposed by the young. Enter Terry Norris
If younger Ray take Marvin, he knock would him out? He had ALOT of chances so why didnt he? If he felt he could knock him out he'd taken the fight along time ago and we wouldnt have to wait 5 years. that's bullshit. Your man just too chicken to fight anyone but old men
Piglatinsuperstar 2 years ago
Champions don't become shot for no reason they become exposed by more skillful fighters. Enter Ray Leonard.
On a more general note WHY should Sugar Ray move up the weights to challege Marvin in 81 etc when there were alot of natural weight great fights out there. Fact is when he did move up the weights he won. You cannot be serious criticizing the man, surely?
Pactrolus 2 years ago
How is Ray going to expose Marvin by calling him out right before he retires? That's not exposing a fighter, it's fighting a shell.
Ray only TALKS ABOUT fighting Hagler but he dont do it. on HBO Hamsho 1 he say wanted Hagler then he chicken out by the end. next year he bring Hagler into a boxing ring and guess what? he chicken out again. Then he came back 3 yrs for a fight and he chicken out AGAIN. That is his REOCRD. Hagler say fuck this cunt, he will wait till I am half dead b4 it happen
Piglatinsuperstar 2 years ago
what do you mean I am not serious? I have all the facts on my side. I have EVERYTHING going for me. That is why I leave people defensless. I even have evidence from YOUTUBE to embarass pricks like u
rd 6, Tim Ryan: "Sugar Ray said Marvin had lost a lot of speed and was counting on the slowness of hagler"
You see? From horse's mouth, that's what the fight come down to. It didnt have anything to do with how good Ray was, he had to rely on Hagler to slow down. That cheapened it
Piglatinsuperstar 2 years ago
Leonard was far from his prime in this fight as well and went up in weight to fight him, after a long lay off! Leonard took no tune up fight and still rose to the occasion. I thought Leonard won the fight, but people will argue the decision for a long time to come.

pb8700538 2 years ago
don't mind your input, because I take it with a grain of salt.
Hope you don't mind MY input.
Mite0m 2 years ago
Actually, if you don't mind my input....Leonard is the biggest egomaniac, and scam.....
He ran around the ring like a pussycat, and when cornered, he starting scratching, went back to running.
He didn't go there to win, his game plan was to 'survive' and "out-point" Hagler.
Leonard was the biggest con artist, not Hagler.
Hagler was blue collar, tough as nails, rugged, man's man.
Mite0m 2 years ago
Hagler didnt have to take this fight, he knew fully what he was up against. You act like he didnt watch the Roberto Duran fight. SRL took Haglers Best shots and made him miss multiple times and look like a fool. Not only did he out point him he out boxed him. Hagler was way too over confident which is shown in the first rounds when he tried to go in orthadox and failed. Round 9 is a testimate of SRL Brilliance in the ring.
InternationalBoy 2 years ago
says you....
I disagree.
Hagler said it: you want my belt you have to come take it and fight me.
bye.
Mite0m 2 years ago
Maybe you should watch round 9 where Hagler traps leonard, and Leonard Turns the Tide. Hagler could of easily cut off the ring and forced combat. lol you need to check the punch cards son. He wasnt just running, he connected way more than hagler did. Blame hagler for his misfires. Youd be an idiot to stand there like herns and get destroyed. Sugars smart he knew he couldnt match power so he out boxed Hagler plain and simple. This is Boxing son, not get your brains bashed in.
InternationalBoy 2 years ago
maybe you should stop trying to get the last word in like a little spoiled, mama's boy brat.
Ah, bye-bye.
Mite0m 2 years ago
lol@this faggot, you say i need to have the last word yet you say "bye" and keep coming back. lol@you
Leonard came to win Plain and simple, Something you do when You play sports.
This aint a Street fight, this is Sports you dummy. People play to win, winning comes with strategy, something you know nothing about.
you should take a trip down to OZ and ask the wizard for a brain.
now Eat your L sandwhich and sit in the Corner Dunce. You know nothing about the art of Boxing.
InternationalBoy 2 years ago
ok, cry baby, mama's boy...whatever you say spoiled little mamma's boy...you're right....make you feel better, mamma's little baby?
Art of boxing, Ha! LOL. You and Leonard should get together and start a bowling league, you both are crybaby's.
Why, did you feel the need to post me again, spoiled, mamma's boy?
Bye, cry baby...
PS WAAAAAHHHH!!

InternationalBoy 2 years ago
Let us not forget the second Hearns robbery...er, fight n '89. Leonard went down twice in that one.
vidnut67 2 years ago
Actually, Leonard was floored for the first time as a pro against Kevin Howard in 1984, which prompted him to retire again until Hagler in '87. He was also floored in his 1988 fight against Don LaLonde. Seems that from '84 onward, his chin - one of the most solid in boxing from 1977 to '82, began to desert him.
vidnut67 2 years ago
If Camacho would have fought a prime Leonard he would have been totally destroyed.
sugarrayspeed 2 years ago
You saw it with Foreman as you see it with Hagler. A stronger brawler gets schooled in the fundamentals of boxing by a more agile and strong enough opponent. Sugar Ray won straight up ...

were was the knockout , no compare betweent ali and foreman . also ali landed soild punches on foreman face not bitch slaps like srl .

That was no where near the Ray Leonard that fans were used to. He was a shell of himself when he fought Hector Camacho a prime Ray Leonard would have KO'd Camacho.
NormenBatez 2 years ago
well that is how stupid srl came from cocaine and taking the fight with camacho cause srl wants to be " THE MAN " and he got beat down
