People Do you not understand that this "sport" is over 1/3 of the province of newfoundlands income?

Call it "inhumane" call it "disgusting" but it is necessary. People would starve to death if it wasnt for this industry. There is a ratio of 10 seals to every 1 person in newfoundland and only 400,000 seals are harvested per year so there is no chance of them going extinct from this practice. Learn BOTH sides of the story before you form your opinion.

Canuck, you can call it not "representative", but the pictures speak for themselves. Baby seals are ripped from their mothers to have their heads bashed in. But it's not as gruesome as the dolphin hunts in Japan: the dolphins are dragged onto docks and slowly cut open to die an agonizing death, all the while hearing their podmates screaming in agony. But I guess people who oppose that are just "silly animal rights" supporters to you.

why i ask do people defend only the "cute" animals that are said to be slaugtered. these seals are hunted by newfoundlanders who need the hunt to support there families and also there livlyhood. and however says the seals are being hunted to extiction is a fool they are growing in population and if they were allowed to over populate thetn there would be a real problem. .

It's not only the "cute" animals. It's that no animal should be killed and people be okay with it. When humans are killed by humans, people object. But since the animals have no voice in the situation, we must do it for them. It is just as horrid as man slaughter. You are KILLING something.

Training for sealers is woefully inadequate and promotes continuation of illegal and cruel hunting methods.

The Seal Hunt may not be directly subsidized, but you need to know that the fisheries in Eastern and Western Canada are the most subsidized on earth. You need only work seasonally for a few weeks every year, and then get paid to do nothing for the remaining 11 months.

This Canada vs USA chest-beating is meaningless as informed people in both countries oppose both sealing and the Iraq war. The question is what can we do about it, and IFAW are doing something about sealing, and they can't be faulted for that.

This is precisely why organizations like these lost my support. There is virtually no footage shown and one boat is far from representative. It's an interpretive piece, in which a woman is shown saying what she thinks had happened. I'd be concerned that my donations were wasted on fuel for this lackluster attempt. Owning/keeping an animal comes with responsibilites. In the same vein hunting a species like Caribou/moose/seal even rabbits ffs, comes with a responsibility to manage them and respect the fact they are a part of our eco-system and environment. These "observers" routinely ignore the law in Canada - They can't use footage of people that don't consent to its use but they do. They can't touch or interact with white coats but they do. They can't trespass but they do. In the end donations will be used to defend these illegal acts, diverting these monies for the endangered species, this seal not being endangered at all.

yeah the sealers shot the seals, not killing it, pulled it into the boat and clubbed it. That sounds ok to me. Im not for clubbing baby seals but if seals arent endangered then it should be ok, just dont kill babies. I hunt doves, sometimes i dont kill them on the 1st shot so i clock its head over the barrel of my shotgun. Nothin unsportsmanlike about what they were doing except that they couldnt hunt that day and they were hunting babies.

Seals aren't being hunted down for sport or fashion. The skins go to Norway and Russia, the meat is eaten in Eastern Canada, the blubber is used for omega 3 supplementation and medical supplies, some of which are used for burn victims. That seal isn't endangered and the baby seals shown in the adds haven't been subjected to a hunt for over 20 years.

IFAW, if you had gone to the supermarket chains in the UK to join the Boycott, like the OLD IFAW did, you could have perhaps accomplished far more. You don't appear to be trying as hard as several other organizations are. Sainsbury's and Tesco would have joined as they did before.
