every father is a hero to his son. paul newman to tom hanks. tom hanks to his son. when paul says" i'm glad its you", it just kills me. a moving painting of " you reap what you sow"
2:14 the griefstricken look on Tom Hanks' face. It's gutwrenching. There's almost a father-son love between his and Paul Newman's character. All the more ironic, because John Rooney despises his own depraved son, and Michael Sullivan is doing this our of retribution for the deaths of his wife and younger son, and to try and save the life of his remaining child.
A pitch perfect masterwork of a film up until the closing line of the film, which was ill advised and below the quality of the rest of the film.
Pay attention to the image in the frame when all the henchman have been shot and are lying on the ground, and Paul Newman is standing to the left side beside the car with his back turned. It's like a painting. And the curious and frightened people looking out of blurry windows. This film is about feeling frozen and powerless as horrible things unfold.
I've seen this movie plenty of times and i love it, so I went to rotten tomatoes to check out the some of the reviews out of curiosity. There are a couple of negative reviews and I just don't understand how someone can dislike Road to Perdition. It goes beyond my ability to comprehend how other people think and feel. I guess haters just gonna hate, and it breaks my heart.
What a movie...a beast of a movie sooo underated. If you liked The Untouchables, Heat, Goodfellas, Casino, and Scarface, then watch this film. It's just too damn good folks!
Very underrated movie, this movie haunted me for weeks after I saw it. Brilliant performances, gorgeous cinematography, an excellent story with great pacing, and a pitch perfect ending. Finally bought the dvd awhile ago, and was very glad that I did.
The cinematography in this scene is so gorgeous. The whole movie was beautifully shot. This is one of those wonderful, serious movies that isn't too pretentious.
This scene, and this movie, are stunningly brilliant. In my opinion, it's one of the best gangster movies of all time and I hate not seeing it near the top of other people's favorite gangster movies.
Best scene of a masterpiece. This film and American Beauty taught me what a good director, director of photography and a great soundtrack can create. You feel every second of it.
the contrast of the brutal violence of the scene and the tranquility it carries is wonderful. the actors, the music, lighting and setting, come together to form something utterly utterly beautiful. one of the best movie scenes of all time
Every person I showed this movie to thought it was slow and boring. I agree it is kind of slow, but this is still one of my favorite movies of all time, this being my favorite song ever since I heard it almost 10 years ago.
@MilknHoneyx you re right...the timing is not for an immature audience...this is a master piece and you can see the Director kept exactly the rithm he wanted.
Hands-down the best shootout in cinema history. Not since "Days of Heaven" and "Once Upon A Time In America" has there been cinematography as unbelievable as this film. It is painful to realize how underrated this film is.
He just lights everybody up... A man who just doesnt give a fuck anymore hes out for revenge just to make himself feel better even though in the end it still wont bring back his wife and kid =/... EPIC MOVIE! LOVED IT
I love Tom Hanks, he's such an amazing actor and he's so versatile. Road to Perdition, Forrest Gump, Philadephia, Toy Story, (just to name a few) are really iconic movies because of him

@hanl9889 INDEED IT IS!! but...why...this movie is like....The unforgiven of gangsters movies (sorry but im not a specialist in movies). But i feel it could do so much better.
How can you say this movie is shit? it's one of the best gangster movies ever. Paul Newman didn't run 'cause he new it wouldn't help, that and he loved tom hanks like a son in the movie, you talk like you haven't actually seen the movie, it's not just about violence it's about betrayal, love and revenge
@Madnessonman i see it like this, the first half of the movie was realy good with story line and stuff, but the other half was sort of dumbed down. not this scene though, it was great
And he doesn't run because hes sick of being haunted by his demons, He faces his music because he knows its the best thing he can do for himself and Sullivan, who was like a son to him.
And he doesn't run because hes sick of being haunted by his demons, He faces his music because he knows its the best thing he can do for himself and Sullivan, who was like a son to him. Maybe you would run but thats because your a dipshit.
@Madnessonman do u even know what a good movie contains. it contains scenes like this that are dramatic, thrilling, and beautiful. he just stood there because he knew he deserved it and wasnt afraid of death. im sure u would be pussy enough to run. this is a great movie and u have no idea what you are talking about. like people said, its not just about violence. youre just an ignorant prick who doesnt know great movies.
I know when I'm being shot at by someone with a 600-1200 rpm machine gun under cover of darkness my number one priority is to hold onto my umbrella and to continue standing in the middle of the street...
the only thing i didnt like about this movie was that none of the prop guns worked like real ones. tom hank's colt 1911 never had the hammer cocked when he shot it, none of the slides ever moved with the guns
Great way to the world of cinema, all the great actors's last films so give them a scene like this where they can really shine one last time before they leave.
Btw the description is wrong. Sullivan kills John Rooney cause Nitti was sheltering John's son only because of his fear and respect for John. Once John was dead, Nitti had no reason to protect John's son, and hence Sullivan killed him.
So much anguish and pain in those words, yet relief that he was going to be killed by someone who loved him like a Father, and not hated him (In essence, there was someone he loved by his side when he died.....even if the death happened at the loved ones hands).
And the look in both their eyes speak volumes too!! Majestic movie, and haunting soundtrack....too bad it didn't get the Oscar for Director/ movie!
I should also say, Thomas Newman worked his musical magic on this film, creating a masterpiece of a soundtrack. It makes the seen not only brilliant to watch, but also brilliant to listen to.
The lighting is masterful. Hanks' silhouette in the darkness is spectacular. It is a scene any director would have wanted to do. It works perfect. Everything is highlighted.
Damn I just saw this film for the first time today. I was goofing off at work mad hungover, I snuck away to a room with a TV and this masterpiece happened to be on. Needless to say nothing got done for two hours. Fuckin classic, its in my top 5 now.
Just watched this film, this scene sent shivers through me i love revenge films but normally they are so brutal. This was done to make it seem like it was peaceful. I like it how Paul newman just accepts his fait and doesnt plead or anything. Amazing film 5 stars.
Did you notice that it seems that this is how great actors say goodbye to acting lately? Here, it's Paul Newman. Remember Clint Eastwood's last scene in 'Gran Torino'?
Powerful indeed, powerful & compelling, with themes both tragic & heroic! For if there is this more superbly filmed, masterfully executed scene in movie history, this scene where all the various elements ((music, cinematography, acting & directing!)) all come flowing together into one seamless, flawless piece of art, then I have yet to see it! For this scene is indeed this brilliant, sublime work of art, this utter masterpiece! Epic, just Epic! The music & cinematography cannot be surpassed!
there's so much pain in Sullivan's face just before he guns down Rooney. this is why it's my favorite scene: without a sound and in the span of a few seconds, Tom Hanks expresses so much pain and conflict.
BTW, the Extended director's cut with added scenes on the DVD - is BETTER than the theatrical release version. It has several scenes that were so important to the characterizations and the story (you'll see Al Capone!) - I advise anyone who loves this film to go see it - there's simply no comparison. And you'll wonder why in hell they cut these great scenes out!
Phenomenal, exquisite lighting by director of photography Conrad Hall. Editing is sheer perfection. The visualization by director Sam Mendes is so artistic, so creative for this scene.... it took my breath away when I first saw it.
Good movie but the graphic novel was WAY more violent and better, like the kid kills like 3 people in the book and Sullivan slashes peoples throats and stuff
I remember it was actually his son Daniel Craig who killed his family. Paul Newman did not know anything about it till the deed was done. He sent Jude Law only after Tom Hanks, not his remaining kid. Besides from the film and this scene you can clearly see how much they cared about one another. Kind of like a Father son relationship that jealous boots Craig was angry about. Even still, 30 bullets is overkill. But sure looked good on the screen :)
Excellent film. The score by Thomas Newman sets the standard for this great story. Another interesting fact is that almost every death in the film is preceded by the presence of water in one way or another. This is on Sam Mendes' commentary for the DVD. In this scene, they are all gunned down in the rain and Mike Sullivan shoots Connor Rooney whilst he's taking a bath in the hotel and Jude Law's character shoots Mike and then gets shot in return whilst by the water. One of the best films around.
Beutifull scene and music but i dont understand why those men are just standing in the middle offf the street with some revolvers against a full auto tommy gun atleast try to search for SOME cover...
@Legio207 It's becuase it created a more beautiful scene...Mendes decided to avoid what made sese to make the scene more stunning. This was gutsy, but this made it more memorable and beautiful....keep on keeping on mendes
i used this in my media lecture as my all time favorite scene, the one scene that just does it for you, that you can watch time and time again and still be amazed. the lighting, sound and camera movements are all stunning and Thomas Newman tops it off with one of his greatest scores yet. perfection
I thought it was going to be some piece of trash movie that I would regret watching.
Just... my god was I wrong. I loved it. It is ridiculously underrated by people who were once as stupid as I was , people who misjudge this movie before giving it a chance.
Not sure if it's been mentioned as I can't be bothered trawling through comments. As the music changes around 1.45 (where Hanks walks up to Newman), that piece of music was sampled by Reflekt - Need to Feel Loved...
You can see it in his eyes: Pain, Sadness, Satisfaction, Forgiveness.
All these feelings can not be expressed by words, but body language and eye contact.
I think he forgave him in the end on what his mentor did to him.
And also I think that Mr.Rooney is tired of taking care of his son, he is glad that his "real" son released him from his failure as father.

Thomas Newman made such a wonderful score for this movie... AND Sam Mendes proved himself to be an exceptional director. His work is artful.
Note to all, Mendes will be directing the next James Bond movie in 2012. Maybe this is exactly what 007 needs, a director who will take him seriously.

no oscars for this right? Fuck the academy...

@Deancho Not true. It won Best Cinematography, and was nominated for a few others. So, it DID get recognized and rightfully so.

The emotion in this scene with the cinematography gives me cold chills. Truly a powerful scene.

there's so much pain in Sullivan's face just before he guns down Rooney. this is why it's my favorite scene: without a sound and in the span of a few seconds, Tom Hanks expresses so much pain and conflict.

In some ways, this film is to the straight-gangster film what Assassination of Jessie James is to the modern Western. Superb.

@Pfisiar22 I'm glad someone feels the same way. I think both of those movies are WAY underrated. They are both such beautiful pieces of art.

When watching Paul Newman in a movie it makes me realize what we have lost.

I'll tell you that Tom Hanks is one of the most overrated actors ever. Paul Newman is awesome, though.
Skipn27 1 year ago
Bit of overkill from Tom Hanks. Fired 30 rounds into Paul Newman from two feet away. Still a great scene and film though :)

@tberwick1 Remember he killed his family and turned against him

@philly442

All the people commenting on the gunfire, stop playing call of duty and pretending to act like you know how to fire guns

Beutifull scene and music but i dont understand why those men are just standing in the middle offf the street with some revolvers against a full auto tommy gun atleast try to search for SOME cover...
Legio207 1 year ago
@Legio207 It's becuase it created a more beautiful scene...Mendes decided to avoid what made sese to make the scene more stunning. This was gutsy, but this made it more memorable and beautiful....keep on keeping on mendes

i used this in my media lecture as my all time favorite scene, the one scene that just does it for you, that you can watch time and time again and still be amazed. the lighting, sound and camera movements are all stunning and Thomas Newman tops it off with one of his greatest scores yet. perfection

I saw this movie by pure chance luck.
I thought it was going to be some piece of trash movie that I would regret watching.
Just... my god was I wrong. I loved it. It is ridiculously underrated by people who were once as stupid as I was , people who misjudge this movie before giving it a chance.
Great movie.

What is the name of the original.. I know reflekt (Seb Fontane & Jay P) sampled it but what is the original?!!
navero1992 1 year ago
Not sure if it's been mentioned as I can't be bothered trawling through comments. As the music changes around 1.45 (where Hanks walks up to Newman), that piece of music was sampled by Reflekt - Need to Feel Loved...
