I'm not a big Marciano fan but I will say he was one tough hombre! I think he did take a cheap shot after Walcott was obviously out on his feet though.
I do not think that Rocky Marciano was particularly strong. I think that the reason why he was able to retire because of the complete victory is that at that time, there was no strong boxer.
@bzm54835 yeah he wasnt strong which is why he ko'd 43 of the 49 guys he faught and put carmine vingo in a coma for half a week , busted blood vessels in roland lastarzas arms and severely mauled his face among many other people that he severely damaged in fights....sure, he wasnt strong at all lol
Jersey Joe was old in these fights but ya have to wonder if he's not near the top of his game cause he fights so damn good. I always like to think quite a few fighters could have beaten the Rock but ya have to really wonder because of his determination and toughness. The Old Mongoose said it was like fighting an airplane propeller.
Walcott lost this fight cause he couldnt believe that he landed so many ko punches and the rock was still coming like it was in the 1st round.Jersey joe could easily spread fear in any boxing era.
@malcjow wouldnt matter if he was younger, he had all the physical tools regardless, he lost because he took a good shot, younger or older, that wouldve ko'd him either way.
I don't know why the Ref ever bothered with counting. Jersey Joe would be still there today if no one was there to help him up. I wonder if anyone saw the picture that was taken just as that hookshot connected. Jersey Joe's face was seriously bent up.
I admire Marciano for his punching power, heart, training habits, and iron jaw, but I think if he had competed twenty years later, he would have been in a division other than heavyweight. IF Ali was in shape and was serious, I think he would have stopped Rocky on cuts in the late rounds...but then go to the hospital.
Yes Louis was old. I believe in his prime he woild have koed the Rock.
I sure would like to apologize for all the racist things I have said here on utube. I was taught to believe that by people I trusted. I'm sorry everybody!
Funny, because Joe Louis himself said that he did not think that he could beat Rocky even in his prime! He said, "This kid is tough enough to beat anybody!"
I don't recall that. I know Louis said that he didn't fight well against a swarmer and that Marciano would give him difficulties even in his prilme. He never said he would lose.
@MORCOPOLO0817 yeah no i aint gonna do that cuz ur full of shit. and if Joe did say that then he said it out of respect. no way joe brown bomber louis loosing to rocky.
@makpak Of course you are not. You don't even have the education to write and speak proper English. How can I expect you to have the wherewithal to research this known fact?!!!
@MORCOPOLO0817 yeah ok im dumb, stupid, ugly, fake, small, fat, smelly, weak, uneducated brown immigrant and im all the bad things in the world except being full of shit.
u r full of shit and it was funny how u didnt even back up wat u said u just went on defence, something rocky didnt do, hes turned in his grave because of u.
@makpak Call yourself what you want. I just said that you don't have command of the English language and are therefore unable to have an open mind to research this. Joe Louis said that he hid a dark secret his whole life and that is that he did not like to be crowded and that is exactly what Marciano did. Louis was not good at close in fighting and the talent that Marciano had was that he could always force a close range fight on his opponents. Ad his strength and toughness and a no prime win.
@MORCOPOLO0817 Louis said all this after the fight. And he also said that he did not think that he could have beat Marciano in his prime! Ask around in Boxing circles they will tell you the same thing if they are not biased against Marciano as many are.
@MORCOPOLO0817 That is just how Great a Champion JL was . He respected the Game. Marciano would of lost to a prime LOUIS no DOUBT ABOUT IT 100% LOCK ON MY RIGHT TESTICLE!
the age diff between joe and rocky is the same as it was for when joe faced braddock for the title he was 9 years younger then jim the same as rocky is 9 years younger then joe , except joe picked this fight he wanted it not rocky.
rockys talent can be questioned with some logic on both sides,,but the punch that knocked out walcott is frightening,,he was out cold,,draped on the ropes, rocky totally put him to sleep with one shot late in the fight,,,,how many great heavies brought that type of punch into a fight that late,,i cant think of too many,,tyson decapitated a few guys earlier,,foreman didnt knock out pastrano or young late,,,ali never had late knockout power,,frazier either,,louis combination took out conn late
Hendrix, you absolutely have no idea who would or wouldn't stand a chance against anyone. You have to be in the ring to know that, and every great fighter since Marciano gave him his due, just read up on what they said. They knew more about what makes a fighter and a fight than you do.
Rocks opponents would stand a chance against Ali prime Louis,Foreman,Frazier ,Dempsey,Klits,Page Tucker Douglas Holy Bowe prime Walcott, Tyson, etc.they all go unbeat also against ROcks 1st and second tier opponents.Forget about second tier. They wouldn't stand a chance against the average cruiser.
looks like ref gave walcott a quick count,,only saw him count to six,,in a heavyweight championship fight you should complete count to eliminate controversy
Marciano was floored with a good shot. For the next 12 rounds, he would take a beating. In the 13th, he finished it with one punch, one of the hardest in the history of boxing. Tyson would have already been long gone after taking a beating like that. Marciano always showed what a champ is made of. Tyson, what a chump is made of.
So what? Wasn't Foreman 45 when he won the championship a second time? Sure, Louis was past his prime, but Marciano had to fight him because Louis was also vying for the crown. He had no choice there, but he wanted to win too, so he did. That's the fight game. Almost every fighter has fought past their prime, and since Walcott was the champ at the time, who else was Marciano supposed to fight? Any fighter that Walcott would face would be younger than him. That's how it goes.
you fucking twat slagging tyson u mug dont comment on a sport u obviously know fuck all about u little twat yeah rocky is one of the greats but even he would of come unstuck with prime tyson
Dickwad, why don't you learn to spell and form words intelligently before replying? You're just a young asshole who thinks he knows everything but doesn't know shit. I'd really like to meet a stupid fuck like you and kick the shit out of you just for saying stupid shit like you do. Do us all a favor, blow your brains out, what there is of them.
you lttle mug i would love to c u attempt to attack me you be unconsious on the floor before you even moved to hit me you fucking litytle pussy tyson was and is the best fighter on the planet in his prime he would of beat any heavyweight past or present go fuck yourself faggot
Walcott, though not young, was at his alltime peak in this fight. He hit Marciano relentlessly for 12 rounds, winning most. A good number of Walcott's punches were KO punches that would have taken out other champs. But Rocky didn't know when he was beaten and even fought several rounds blinded by linament on his eye. And in Round 13, when most fighters' main concern was staying on their feet, Marciano - incredibly -landed the greatest alltime KO punch. Marciano? The symbol of all ring warriors.
To Bonesteoca : Because they're too young to remember the early 1950s and the background to that era. Ali was colourful in a different way that maybe appeals more to the modern mentality.
lol the era of the 70s was greater than any other boxing era could ever hope to be. Marciano was one of the few good fighters in the 50s, along with Jersey Joe Walcott, I suppose. But the 70s had more than one could count. Atmosphere, talent, whatever, the 70s were nicer to boxing, and Ali emerged the king of that era. Not to put down Marciano or anything, but he never fought a truly great fighter who was in his prime.
Marciano fought & beat the best in his era & could do no more. Walcott & Charles are HallofFamers. It's also true that to back the old timers against their modern successors is like backing Roger Banister to run a faster mile than modern athletes, whereas he'd actually come in last. Are we prepared to see boxing as somehow exempt from this sort of evolutionary progress? It may well be that none of the past great heavyweights would have beaten even an average modern fighter, but no one says this.
What are you talking about? Buster Douglas, one of the worst heavyweight champions ever (but a good fighter nonetheless) would absolutely destroy any one of the marshmallows who call themselves a heavyweight in this day and age. There's a reason the heavyweight title is currently vacant. The sport doesn't gain talent with respect to time. Lebron James, for example, is not as good as Michael Jordan.
You haven't understood. What I am saying is that it seems hardly plausible for boxing to be the only sport where there isn't substantial & consistent improvement over time. That doesn't mean that every later heavyweight excels every previous one. It means that the general overall standard should be considered as going up the way with time. This means that defending an old time champion over a modern one probably has more to do with emotion than objectivity.
Boxing isn't the only sport where that's true. Most unpopular sports (boxing was only really popular in the 70s) don't have their expectations raised over time. There are videos of the 70s boxers as well, the 70s hardly qualify as old times.
