Jersey Joe was old in these fights but ya have to wonder if he's not near the top of his game cause he fights so damn good. I always like to think quite a few fighters could have beaten the Rock but ya have to really wonder because of his determination and toughness. I admire Marciano for his punching power, heart, training habits, and iron jaw, but I think if he had competed twenty years later, he would have been in a division other than heavyweight. Joe Louis said that he hid a dark secret his whole life and that is that he did not like to be crowded and that is exactly what Marciano did. Louis was not good at close in fighting and the talent that Marciano had was that he could always force a close range fight on his opponents. Ad his strength and toughness and a no prime win.

Marciano was floored with a good shot. For the next 12 rounds, he would take a beating. In the 13th, he finished it with one punch, one of the hardest in the history of boxing. Tyson would have already been long gone after taking a beating like that.  Marciano always showed what a champ is made of. Tyson, what a chump is made of.

Walcott, though not young, was at his alltime peak in this fight. He hit Marciano relentlessly for 12 rounds, winning most. A good number of Walcott's punches were KO punches that would have taken out other champs. But Rocky didn't know when he was beaten and even fought several rounds blinded by linament on his eye. And in Round 13, when most fighters' main concern was staying on their feet, Marciano - incredibly -landed the greatest alltime KO punch. Marciano? The symbol of all ring warriors.

But the 70s had more than one could count. Atmosphere, talent, whatever, the 70s were nicer to boxing, and Ali emerged the king of that era. Not to put down Marciano or anything, but he never fought a truly great fighter who was in his prime.

It's also true that to back the old timers against their modern successors is like backing Roger Banister to run a faster mile than modern athletes, whereas he'd actually come in last. It may well be that none of the past great heavyweights would have beaten even an average modern fighter, but no one says this.

Buster Douglas, one of the worst heavyweight champions ever (but a good fighter nonetheless) would absolutely destroy any one of the marshmallows who call themselves a heavyweight in this day and age. There's a reason the heavyweight title is currently vacant. The sport doesn't gain talent with respect to time. Lebron James, for example, is not as good as Michael Jordan.

You haven't understood. What I am saying is that it seems hardly plausible for boxing to be the only sport where there isn't substantial & consistent improvement over time. That doesn't mean that every later heavyweight excels every previous one. It means that the general overall standard should be considered as going up the way with time. This means that defending an old time champion over a modern one probably has more to do with emotion than objectivity.
