I wonder what would happen if you were parked in a puddle or mud. Or during the winter time when snow is on the ground, and ice, and uneaven ground. Or ya, and I wonder how this door would do with freezing rain, since it seems the window has to lower for the door to work. Amagine the maintenance on these, your power window motor blows, oh crap my door won't go down. Good idea, but not for everywhere.
Hey! Who left the lights on?!? Now what do we do? Can’t get in to pop the hood for a jump because the battery is dead and my door won’t work!!!!!! Or worse yet… Hey! My car just died!!! How do I get out!?!?! Now just try that on a nice sunny day in Dallas Texas! I’m going to sell magnetic hammers that stow under the seats.
How am I going to put my pens and junk in the little pocket on the door? What happens to all that stuff when I can’t see it any more? My pens and junk can’t be trusted to behave when not in full view at all times. They will find a motor or gear and jam themselves in the most expensive place they can find.
The Jaws of life can’t just pry you out until the door pops open. We will need the Jaws, Head, Feet and Hands of life to get you free. Your car will look like you took the Predator’s favorite squeaky toy and he wanted it back...
As a firefighter, I'd like to know about extrication - using spreaders and cutters to remove the doors in order to access patients inside a wrecked car. Has JATECH thought about that?
Oldsmobile did it with the rear (5th) door on the 1972 Vista Cruiser. Nothing new here. And in a crash that jams your door shut it doesn't matter much whether the door opens in, out, up, or down; if it's jammed shut it is jammed shut. C'est la guerre.
This is great but, what I really need is to be able to pop the engine hood up, fold the entire front bumber, grill and headlights down, and slide the entire engine block out so I can do all maintenance and repairs on it myself in my garage.
can the door still function if it got hit on the side? how much of a dent can it sustain before it become a problem to open/close? what if you hit a bump on the road, will that become a problem for the door to function?
Bicyclists are circulating links to this video as if the roll-under door eliminates the hazard of riding close to parked vehicles. But, let's take off those rose-colored glasses.
A bicyclist can still run into the people getting out of the car. And theres no less danger with people who run out from between parked vehicles.
So, don't ride in the door zone even if the door can't open into it. That applies with today's sliding doors too.
I totally agree it's nice to have that extra feature,
but what if the said person driving it, falls into a flood/river, and needs to escape immediately from the vehicle... how are they suppose to escape? They can't get push on the door to get out! Maybe they should improve on it, both with standard opening, and slide opening... that way if something should happen, there is two ways to get out, not just one....
Hope theres a way to manually open this door. If you loose power in an accident how do you get out? And hopefully your conscious to open the door. I'd say there has to be a button on the outside in case the battery in your remote dies but how is a rescue workers suppose to know that?
@chewalter What happens with a 'regular door when it's raining? It appears to have the potential to be stronger than a regular door since it seals inward like a ships hatch.

How is the ability to open the door affected, if it has been hit and structural integrity has been compromised?
Gr8stuffis 1 year ago
@Gr8stuffis
That's a good point. Often there is limited amount of time to get passengers out after a MVC.
The problem I see is its reliability on technical function. There is no manual override!

apart from all the other issues mentioned, what about the roofs structural integrity? wouldn't it be weaker by removing the side frame?

And if your battery dies, how to you get into the engine compartment to jump start the car?

@WyldeLee You know, the hood release doesnt have to be on the inside of the car.

I can't stand "Waiting" for a door to open/close. The auto-sliding doors on my Caravan are a pain as I wait for them to slide shut.
It's cool-looking. Just not sure it's a feature that really needs to be re-engineered.
