My laptop (it's an HP dv4 running Vista) usually boots up less than minute. However, once it gets to the desktop screen, there's hard disk activity for another 5 minutes. Then again, I just noticed the date of this video and I'm guessing 2 GB RAM was the standard amount at that time where as now it's 4 GB.

my pc boots up so much faster. plus mac has the same excuses. no virues, easier to use, and faster boot up and shut down. i dont have a problem with virues because i know how to get rid of them. my boot up time is under a minute and thats not very long. who gives a crap about shut down. i click shut down and walk away. so who cares!

However Mac kernel built over Unix still can't be run on anyother PC, whereas other Unix distribution wrok seamlessly an better than MAC. Its by the way quite easy to make an operating system optimized for a specific hardware than making it flexible. Think of a website that just runs of a single browser.

good software costs money, i know u have the free os, that's cool, but the free soft consists in open office (we all have that) and some free dvd burning soft and media players. there is not a lot of professional soft on linux platform, except houdini, which costs money...

@AtheismandSkepticism yes, they did. linux kernels are open source so anyone can do that, just like red hat. os x it's not just some linux kernel with some photo editing apps, it's a lot more than that. actually it's better than windows and "free" linux put together. it offers the best from both worlds, minus the windows problems and linus's shortage of popular and quality software. even a banal app like yahoo messenger sucks on linux.
No, the linux kernel is under the GNU GPL and derived works can only be distributed under the same license terms. If that were true, apple would be breaking the license by charging you money for their software + being closed source.
Anyway, none of this explains why apple shit is so damn expensive, or why an OS which is free + open source can boot up quicker than one which has an army of developers behind it.

You can't compare general speed, you need to define the distro we're talking about. Arch linux on any system will probably run faster than a mac with any specs you want, while linux mint will be a lot slower.
I don't know what yahoo messenger could possible do that is so amazing, but pidgin sends IMs and if you don't like it you can add to the source code or there are thousands of IM clients free, just find one you like.

I have used Windows 95, 98, XP, and the suckfest that is Vista.
My PC laptop didn't even last a year. It was always slow and grew slower. I figured frustration and slow loading was the norm and I'd just always have to be patient.
I switched to Mac over a year ago and it runs the same now as it did when I first took it from the box. To put it simply it does what its supposed to do. A Mac works with you. A PC works against you. Period.

The battery runs for a long time about 4 hours and 30 minutes and my vista rocks. And i tried a mac and honestly i think a windows has more open doors and i hate the feel of a mac. and don't get mad at him for just saying whats true.

@BlakByte u better believe it. this vid was made after a FRESH install of the os from the recovery partition, cuz the hp doesn't give u the win install disk. did u see the blue light buttons on top of the keyboard? those require drivers, those drivers took that long to load on start up. uninstalling the drivers will defeat the purpose of having them. so u see... the hp experience is fucked up. i manage to salvage the pc by installing snow leopard on it and it runs just great.

the PC took way too long to boot. i have a 400.99$ PC notebook i got 2008 IBM and it definitely does not take more than 1 minute or 2 max to boot. also just like mac makes use of better materials to maximize the performance of the "computer" different brands for PC make different use of material, which is why the price range for PC's are greater. in reality custom build PC with Linux would punish all and only in productivity but price as well.

You can patch the files on a Mac OS X install disc and install it on the PC (if you want to you can dual boot Windows XP and Mac OS X). The problem is, the patch has legal issues, and by installing the Macintosh OS on anything but an Apple-labeled computer, you're breaking your End User License Agreement (EULA) with Apple.

this is not about games, but... a game made for mac will run just as fast... or if u install windows with boot camp it will run the same as on a pc with the same specs.
now let me bring u some knowledge: putting this at a very simple state, the human eye will read ~60 fps, after that the image will seem choppy or blurry, so a game running at 100 fps will not make much of a difference than one running at 60. a film runs at ~30, do u detect any choppiness in movies?
Did I say you need to run a game at 60 fps? Sure you can play a game between 30-60 fps, but that do depend on what game you are playing. If you are a gamer, I don't recommend getting a mac, since you cannot upgrade it. Of course if a pc has the same specs of a mac, it will play at the same frame rate, it's basically the same PC. However there is where the mac falls flat, with a PC you can easily upgrade to the latest hardware, play the latest games, and browse at lightening fast speeds.
Sure the mac OS may be faster, but is the hardware? No. And please dont bring up the argument PC has virus's, Pcs are slow, etc. If a person is stupid enough to get a virus, or if they do not intend on doing anything other then browsing pictures, then sure move to a mac. well, i did said the latest... 3 years ago i did spent 250 euro (like 300$) on my mb, like 400 eu on the cpu, 460 eu on the gfx, 250 on the ram, 200 eu on my raptor 1000rpm, which died... and a new 100 eu GAMING source, cuz we r gamers here... that's all about, isn't it? if u add that up and convert it to us dollars, ya... it's a lot... and i had the LATEST AVERAGE gaming pc at that time. keep in mind that the latest and the greatest cpu at this time it's about 900 $...
and not to mention that u need a really good cooler..like 100 $, and a really good case, some good fans etc... when you'r saying that is not that much, as i say, well then maybe u r buying the last year's cpu and a really stripped down mb, with some non-name ram, 20$ power source and the cheapest maxtor... that is not average for the current year, that's just low for a gamer...like u.

actually you can order laptops without on board video cards. there are laptops out there that use pci express slots and ya can get the smaller versions of video cards and put them in but thats for more richer ppl then us little guys
it also depends on how its treated. a battery will never only last 3 minutes unless its really old. and looks don't matter to someone who wants only functionality. and ppl also want to take their computer with them but you can't do that with a desktop. so really all it comes down to is preference

However Mac kernel built over Unix still can't be run on anyother PC, whereas other Unix distribution wrok seamlessly an better than MAC. No, the linux kernel is under the GNU GPL and derived works can only be distributed under the same license terms. If that were true, apple would be breaking the license by charging you money for their software + being closed source.

You can't compare general speed, you need to define the distro we're talking about. Arch linux on any system will probably run faster than a mac with any specs you want, while linux mint will be a lot slower.
I don't know what yahoo messenger could possible do that is so amazing, but pidgin sends IMs and if you don't like it you can add to the source code or there are thousands of IM clients free, just find one you like.
You haven't addressed why macs are so damn expensive.

I have used both the mac and an HP PC.
I have used Windows 95, 98, XP, and the suckfest that is Vista.
My PC laptop didn't even last a year. It was always slow and grew slower. I figured frustration and slow loading was the norm and I'd just always have to be patient.
I switched to Mac over a year ago and it runs the same now as it did when I first took it from the box. To put it simply it does what its supposed to do. A Mac works with you. A PC works against you. Period.

The battery runs for a long time about 4 hours and 30 minutes and my vista rocks. And i tried a mac and honestly i think a windows has more open doors and i hate the feel of a mac. and don't get mad at him for just saying whats true.

@BlakByte u better believe it. this vid was made after a FRESH install of the os from the recovery partition, cuz the hp doesn't give u the win install disk. did u see the blue light buttons on top of the keyboard? those require drivers, those drivers took that long to load on start up. uninstalling the drivers will defeat the purpose of having them. so u see... the hp experience is fucked up. i manage to salvage the pc by installing snow leopard on it and it runs just great.

the PC took way too long to boot. i have a 400.99$ PC notebook i got 2008 IBM and it definitely does not take more than 1 minute or 2 max to boot. also just like mac makes use of better materials to maximize the performance of the "computer" different brands for PC make different use of material, which is why the price range for PC's are greater. in reality custom build PC with Linux would punish all and only in productivity but price as well.

You can patch the files on a Mac OS X install disc and install it on the PC (if you want to you can dual boot Windows XP and Mac OS X). The problem is, the patch has legal issues, and by installing the Macintosh OS on anything but an Apple-labeled computer, you're breaking your End User License Agreement (EULA) with Apple.

If you want to make a real test... install 30 apps in windows, and mac. Then uninstall them and install other 40 apps!

now let me bring u some knowledge: putting this at a very simple state, the human eye will read ~60 fps, after that the image will seem choppy or blurry, so a game running at 100 fps will not make much of a difference than one running at 60. a film runs at ~30, do u detect any choppiness in movies?

Did I say you need to run a game at 60 fps? Sure you can play a game between 30-60 fps, but that do depend on what game you are playing. If you are a gamer, I don't recommend getting a mac, since you cannot upgrade it. Of course if a pc has the same specs of a mac, it will play at the same frame rate, it's basically the same PC. However there is where the mac falls flat, with a PC you can easily upgrade to the latest hardware, play the latest games, and browse at lightening fast speeds.

Sure the mac OS may be faster, but is the hardware? No. And please dont bring up the argument PC has virus's, Pcs are slow, etc. If a person is stupid enough to get a virus, or if they do not intend on doing anything other then browsing pictures, then sure move to a mac. Sure, I agree, windows OS isnt that great, but the customization IS great.

yes, windows computers are way better for games than macs, but that's about it. the only hardware apple haz, that is way better, is on macpro. the upgrading thing... a gamer will update the gfx, ram and maybe hdd, which u can do on a mac... if u change the mb and cpu, that's the whole computer.

it's actually "half of the things"... if u don't understand, than maybe YOU should do some learning... it's clear to me that u don't build your own computers...like me... the latest average cpu+motherboard will cost ~ 700$, which costs just as much as a shitty walmart pc, that i bet u have. with some new ram, 1000rpm hdd, and a 500$ gfx... do the math, your upgrade costs as a new computer.

well, i did said the latest... 3 years ago i did spent 250 euro (like 300$) on my mb, like 400 eu on the cpu, 460 eu on the gfx, 250 on the ram, 200 eu on my raptor 1000rpm, which died... and a new 100 eu GAMING source, cuz we r gamers here... that's all about, isn't it? if u add that up and convert it to us dollars, ya... it's a lot... and i had the LATEST AVERAGE gaming pc at that time. keep in mind that the latest and the greatest cpu at this time it's about 900 $...

and not to mention that u need a really good cooler..like 100 $, and a really good case, some good fans etc... when you'r saying that is not that much, as i say, well then maybe u r buying the last year's cpu and a really stripped down mb, with some non-name ram, 20$ power source and the cheapest maxtor... that is not average for the current year, that's just low for a gamer...like u.

actually you can order laptops without on board video cards. there are laptops out there that use pci express slots and ya can get the smaller versions of video cards and put them in but thats for more richer ppl then us little guys

4th. they will overheat like hell.
5th. it will still be much slow than a desktop pc with the same specs.
it seems to me that a laptop like that can be used mostly on a desktop, so why not buy a desktop computer?

it also depends on how its treated. a battery will never only last 3 minutes unless its really old. and looks don't matter to someone who wants only functionality. and ppl also want to take their computer with them but you can't do that with a desktop. so really all it comes down to is preference
