Happy 30th anniversary.Opened in US theatres during memorial day weekend 1980.Saw this movie for the first time when I was a 7 year old in the 1st grade.
By the way,the original Star Wars movie music gets me "pumped up".
It's interesting how The Empire Strikes Back wasn't release during the summer blockbuster season. I guess Star Wars invented the summer blockbuster season three years earlier and the concept was still in it's infancy. This is my favorite out of the original triology. The other three dosen't belong in the same category as far as I'm concern. The kiss scene between Leia and Hun before the carbon chamber freeze is the best.
This is my favorite too! EVERYTHING in The Empire Strikes Back is PERFECT! I love the way it starts. I LOVE the MUSIC, which is even BETTER than in The Return Of The Jedi! Ofcourse The "Imperial March" and the combat sequence is good in TROTJedi, but there's NO (action) music during the Speederbike chase on Endor! And sometimes the music sounds DATED on TROTJedi, but NEVER on TESBack, which is 3 years OLDER! And I love the ending visuals and music: C3-PO's hand on R2-D2, Luke's hand on Leia.
@ kboizkillah: NOW there are 6. But for more than a DECADE there were only 3!
The "original" Return Of The Jedi" (Star Wars: Episode VI) was made in 1983! 14 years later, in 1997, George Lucas released the triology (Episode IV, V and VI) again...with some added Computer Generated Images and some new scenes...Later on Star Wars Episode I, II and III were released.
ookay. im watching the trailers for the movies in order ('cause i am THAT cool) , and i have to say, this one was better until the portraits of the characters came up. i would have been like 'luke, han, leia, - WTF?!' but ive seen it, so i need not worry. right, now for episode 6.
why does alot of people think that the episodes 4,5,6 are the best ones, 1,2,3 are the ones that show how anakin became a jedi and how he was suduced by the dark side, so why would you hate it
it was kinda hard to make it it the other way around and to start like it does in the first one. george lucas in the end was actually glad he did it that way
No, he did it that way because 4, 5 & 6 WERE the story originally. He wrote them as one script, but realized it was too large for one movie, so he broke it up. And while doing so, he realized there was a backstory he wanted to tell as well, which years later became the prequel trilogy.
But when Star Wars was first released, it wasn't called "Episode 4", because he had no idea if he'd ever get to make any more. So it had to be self-contained. "Episode 4" was added to the title in rereleases.
oh shut just shut up please have respect for people who love the new films you can judge all day because you have nothing better to do with you time you just hate new films because there so much better what you got in your childhood your just jelous and angry you cant admit that the new films are better then does old planet of the apes movies you used to no and love its time if you were smart you would no the billiance of the new films
the originals will always be the originals thats relaty i respect these films for a lot of reasons but prefare the new ones because the inprovement from the old to new is shown the story is deeper in the new ones and theres more to tale you need to relise the truth movies now a days are not what they were back then things have inproved
the new movies are way worse than the originals. but ya, i do like the new ones better, for some odd reason.... probably because i cry alot when padme and anakin get together and etc.
Ya, movie wise, you know, with the critics and such the older ones are actually *better* movies. but i prefer the newer ones cause they just seem to have more heart.
I know, I really agree. Of course these will always be in people's hearts because for most of them it's what they grew up on. The prequels can't beat that. But I still prefer them for the depth in the actual stories being told (they were on the scale of a government as opposed to a few rebels) and imagination of the characters and settings. Original fans, don't shred me it's just my preference.
This trailer was obviously made before they had put the finishing touches on the lightsabers :P

They didn't have colored light sabers?
BradenMcDonnell 2 years ago
They did have colored lightsabers, but when they put these trailers together the film is still in production with Visual Effects being finished.
Mark Hamill said in a Documentary from 1984 the reason why they decided to color the lightsabers was to give them a more dramatic effect.

You would hate it because it was poorly written. It's nice to have the back story, but the movies were badly acted and the script was terrible.

George Lucas probably did that so that everyone would want to watch the movies so they'd know the mysteries behind it.

I read that George Lucas did originally want to call it Episode 4, but the studio (20th Century Fox) insisted that he not.
