This type of treatment does serve a purpose. You are trying to transition civilians into the military. It is not merely meant to be demeaning or harsh but rather get them to understand that they need to listen and pay attention to direct and specific sets of instructions and carry them out. It is to ensure that they can accomplish tasks under severe distress, ie having bullets flying past your head and needing to still accomplish the tasks at hand.
