I regretted getting a samsung! I thought the front lcd was unique that is why i bought it. Other then that it is just a total regret! This camera doesn't manage iso well, hard time focus or doesn't focus well at all during recording a video. etc.

i bought this camera today and did not do my research.

i love it in almost every way but there is one reason that i am going to sadly return it tomorrow: when you are in movie mode and zoom in or out, the microphone mutes itself. you can see it in this vid as a good example.

WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT?! i know these things are mainly for pics but some of us like to use them for video too. a movie with sound that cuts in and out is no good.

The temporary mute is used to prevents zoom motor noise when recording.

I wonder if they have done this as with the WB550 there is motor noise when zooming in or out...the front LCD is near enough just a gimmick though

after returning my st 550 i ended up going with the ST 1000, also from samsung. it costs more than this model but does not mute while zooming in movie mode. there is some lens noise, but that is preferable in my opinion to dead silence.

if you're interested to see it, i put up a short vid of my neighbor's cows on my channel. you can see the zoom and also hear the lens noise. i'm very happy with the st 1000.

@movitmovit it's normal for most cameras to either not let you zoom or to mute the sound. afaik You won't find a compact which will zoom with sound!

yep, that's why i bought the samsung st-1000, which does allow you to zoom with sound. see my channel for a sample if you're interested. look for the vid with the cows.

Point & Shoot Cameras Lack when it comes to video mode.....

Am on my second purchased camera this week, finepix j37, cool cam but cant zoom during video at all and the audio is too low ! Its going back.... was going to get the samsung st550, but now, thanks to this video i wont be !

Camera phones seem to be the most useful ( 4mp+ ones) you can zoom AND PAUSE ! during video records with no disturbances...mayb just invest in a good phone cam :)

both the st550 and the st1000 allow you to pause and then resume while in the same file. it's a nice feature that not many other 720p cams have at this point in time.

@movitmovit Thanks for letting us know that. Is it true that you can change the settings on the st550 and 500 to allow you to zoom during movie mode without it cutting the sound?

i don't know whether or not it can be done on a hardware level but you can't do it with any of the menu settings on the st550. i am not familiar with the st500 so i can't answer for that particular model.

the st1000 allows you to zoom with sound, but of course it also costs more.

@movitmovit I dont bother about the motor noise, I bother with the mute, check my videos, the canon 210 is doesnt mute on zoom! :)

According to Samsung, the microphone is muted to prevent the motor noise from being recorded.
