  • I'm not that sure, but the Grateful Dead alway seemed a bit dead to me. I heard that to really apreciate them you must see them in person ??

  • @karmicsin1 i really appreciate them and i've never seen them in person. it's music. all you need are ears and a sense of adventure. a little herbal refreshment doesn't hurt either.

  • What a wonderful little story.

  • My first show was 1980, last was charlotte 1990. Have so many great memories. The culture and scene was so truly unique.

I was really bitter after Jerry passed. unlike Duane or Stevie Ray who died in accidents; personally, for a long time I was pissed: 'Why could Jerry get his shit together and get healthy!'

But we have all the music and the memories...and NOW have furthur! So it's all good, and I look back and fondly remember some crazy times.

  • 1)do as many drugs as possible to avoid reality. 2)sell bogus drugs at inflated prices to your "brother".3) don't bathe. 4)babble on about peace and making the world into utopia while never actually doing anything. 5)wear ugly clothes. Fascinating culture and philosophy..........move on.

  • @TheManolakis Why don't you shove your earbuds so tight they meet in the middle. If you don't like the scene leave it alone and don't bum someone else's trip. Bummer, man....

  • @TheManolakis

1)Believe in 'Reality' and 'Practicality' and never bother to change things.

2)Never try anything new in this life, be happy in the limited existence you live.

3)Believe in the supernatural being whom you have never seen, never feeled, never heard, because your Mamma used to.

4)Never understand the story behind the words.

5)Be born, grow, get a job .Die. Be forgotten. Never live.

Open your eyes. Or rather, open your ears, 'brother'. Listen carefully, the songs speak to you.

  • I don't know why, but I don't like this guy. His story doesn't sound genuine...it's like he's reading someone else's memoirs. I'm betting that he made at least half of this shit up in an attempt to portray himself as a real Deadhead.

    Nice shirt, dude-guy. Nice shirt.

  • hell yah, wat a good story. put a smile on my face,

  • wow great story

  • Wow I want to punch this guy. Yuppie poster boy. Peace and Love Brother. Eat some mushrooms and go hangout with the homeless.

  • @bnjmn0320 fuck off, loser

  • @lookitsthescenekid No. I watched it again to make sure, this guys reminds me way too much of my first manager who would bully people and refuse to give away free food spoils, then talk about where he was the day jerry died and how he painted a mural. Being into the Grateful Dead isn't anymore psychedelic than being into Jimmy Buffet if you aren't going to live life as a psychedelic experience. Ps- No sarcasm intended when saying "Eat mushrooms and go hangout with the homeless. "

  • God damn hippieeeeeeeeeees !!!

  • i often gave tickets away

  • This honestly made me tear up with happiness.

    Bless the grateful dead!

  • for what it's worth: was late showing up to this reading, showed up late, after running and sweating, made it there, but sweating hard, still great time...

  • ah hah hah hah!!!

  • YOU CHEAP FUCK!!! YOU STOLE YOUR WAY INSIDE YOU FUCKING LOSER!!!!

  • @TheRanFan You don't get it

  • looks like he's sweating out all the weed he smoked in those years

  • my mom dated brent

  • @1993svtLightning .. No Way!!

  • @doitboy sorry this is extremely late but yea she did... not like she was famous but she did while he was in the band. she tells alotta cool stories and such.

  • i think he took some lsd before the interview lol

  • Did someone say sweat race?

  • I went to the Oxford shows and it was awesome...it WAS the best party in the cuntry. I consider myself very fortunate to be a part of the family and I was happy to leave nothing behind but footprints, just as The Dead had left their print on me. My friends and I had brought a lot of suplies for these shows, in the way of food and three huge water bottles. We shared with anyone who asked and made a lot of new friends. It's been some time now and my kids roll their eyes at my stories, but smile.

  • Yep.....it was what you made of it.

  • Not true that the dead never cracked down on profiteers.Something few folks know though , the band reserved a bunch of tickets and staffers would circulate outside looking for folks who needed to be inside to give free tickets to.

  • thanks for wiping the brow sweat....lol! you mention t.c. worked with him last night. we are neighbors in charlotte n.c. still an amazing player... and great guy....will show him your rap. dg

  • Not right thinking if you think you're always going to get something free, you're the one who's fucked in the head... selling tickets is fucked up? I don't think so...

  • Listening to this reminds me that I should thank God everyday for looking over me back then, I very well could have been locked in cage many times out there. I remember seeing a lot of bad things happen when the six shooters came out, I left that all behind in 92 when back home to grow onions and raise goats, take care sisters and brothers.

  • thats why i am a dead head r u kind

  • blessed be

  • Yay! you did get in..me too : ) That was a great couple of shows!!

  • Iko IKo , what an awsome show. delightful story for all deadheads

  • god i wish i could have gone to see the dead, i've been a teenager in the wrong decade

  • amen

  • i need to read this book.

  • love to see some of us still dancing and waveing peace sings....

    paz.../

  • Nice one. Brad Liverpool u.k

  • of course man

  • Casey Jones

  • hits? ..

  • ???

  • the dead is a way of life, no offense - i just thought you were looking at inappropriately.

  • You are right. Well, there's also Uncle John's Band.

Oh, yeah, there's Friend of the Devil, too.

Uhh, I guess Sugar Magnolia and Franklin's Tower were OK.

I really like Eyes of the World, Fire on the Mountain, Dire Wolf, Ripple, Box of Rain, Truckin, Box of Rain, Cassidy, Terrapin Station, Good Lovin', Touch of Grey, Cassidy, Foolish Heart, Alabama Getaway and Hell in a Bucket.

But you are right, they really only had one good song.

Try some of the others, you might like 'em! :)

  • u put box of rain twice i ie that cuz its such a kool song

  • This is a code of ethics?

A code that says you can steal from the people who bring you the most joy?

By not paying, he stole from the Dead!

No good code of ethics says you can steal from people who love you, or from any peaceful person.

The dead were about loving life and forming community. But they were also about free trade. The parking lot was always a free market, even in drugs. And the Dead themselves were happy to get rich while making others so happy.

    This guy's got it wrong.

  • meaningful comment, i think both your and his viewpoints are valid - even in opposition. the Dead would also forgive, imo.

  • The Dead probably would have forgiven, but they were never given the chance to do so.

I think the Dead were "open source" pioneers. They never cracked down on scalpers, people selling non-authorized Dead-branded stuff in the parking lots, nor even boot-leg tapes of their performances.

I think the knew that they would make more money in the long run if they allowed this free market to flourish.

The current record industry could learn a lot from them.

  • Absolutely.

  • hey now,

just in case you weren't aware, barlow basically started the EFF (electronic frontier foundation). And deadheads were some of the first WELL message boardies, starting the internet revolution!

  • @freesk8 Worse than scalpers....gate crashers.

  • @Thejbirdy I have no problem with scalpers.

But gate-crashing is a form of theft.

  • @freesk8 Well but then again I also knew regular deadheads that would sneak past ticket-takers,etc etc.

It was just the gate crashers that were hurting people and ruining the scene in the Dead's last few years that TRULY sucked ass.

  • @freesk8 - sorry, you're wrong. There was so much security in the 1990's taking anything with so much as a lightning bolt, taking beer, tanks, etc. Not trying to argue, but they cracked down on everything you said they didn't.

  • @freesk8 ... totally started breaking down on bootlegg shirts.

  • @freesk8 so could a lot of democrats.

  • @freesk8 I know this comment is old...the Authors word are soooooo true! I swear I had seen this guy at about 14 on tour...but it was probably some other family kid. However as to the comment...yes the Grateful Dead were "open source pioneers" they had taper sections exclusively for people tapeing the show...real nice! (they have since gotten greedy about those recordings!!!) And as for the non authorized Dead stuff...nope, they regularly would just gank somebody's living, taking boxes of shirts

  • @freesk8 In the early 90's they played a recording of Phil telling you if you did not have a ticket, do not come to the show! In Oakland the thug security stole my stove after I had turned it off 20 min earlier. I had to pick it up on Mon from a guy in a polo shirt with a dead logo who told me "If you come to a show you are not a Dead Head. I told him to fuck himself and that I was a LIVE HEAD! Oakland is a lovely place with 250,000 dead heads but by Mon...not a friendly place for van living!

  • @wolco003 Should have read "If you come to a show WITHOUT A TICKET you are not a Dead Head" Inspite of the 90's crap from the band, it was still the greatest time of my life!

There is NOTHING in the World like a Grateful Dead Show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • those were the days

  • LOL! Makes me wanna go to a show!

  • As the saying goes..."Take what you need & leave the rest"! (;-)

  • Going to Phish on Sunday! Whoop Whoop!

  • Alpine Valley? That place is sooooooo sick!!!
