  • technically this is worth noting: "... the notion of a unit of social evolution, and a similar term (from Greek mneme, 'memory'), first appeared in 1904 in a work by the German evolutionary biologist Richard Semon: Die Mnemische Empfindungen in ihren Beziehungen zu den Originalenempfindungen, translated into English in 1921 as The Mneme."

The plot thickens...what if a plate exists from about 5000 BCE that has the word MNEME on it?

...what if this plate is a model of the Milky Way?

    namaste

  • Some of the 'MEME experts' (S Blackmore) suggest that the 3 requirements that contribute to good genes/memes would be 1/ Longevity 2/ Fecundity 3/ Fidelity.

So I was wondering what your take is Mickeleh on a candidate for the *ULTIMATE MEME* keeping in mind that trinity of requirements?

What is the ultimate meme that keeps getting carried forward, through time, space, and motion?

I have given it some thought.

The 'ultimate meme' I found, there is evidence going back to about 10,000+ BCE....

  • you suck

  • @thugishbabiigrl trollface.jpg

  • Y U NO TALK RICHARD DAWKINS?

  • Love the monty python and Goon show memes :D

  • *ME ME

  • 15 people have shocking bad hats

  • Oh my Mickeleh! Was that a Goon Show quote?

:D Glad I'm making my way back through your video's. Not just for the Goon Show reference obviously. I like them all! :)

  • Doubly Doo? It seems someone knows WheezyWaiter...

  • ever since seeing this video the word meme has appeared in my life too many times..I see it everywhere I go!

    what causes this?

  • dooby doo! yesss wheeezzzzyyyy waaaiiitttteerrrrr

  • are you scripting this, love listening to you!

  • @stuartpalm Yes. This one was scripted. They aren't all scripted. But I like scripting.

  • I'm embarassed to say I thought it was said "meh-meh" before this vid. Like a variation of memo. Lol.

  • doobly doo...I suspect that you are a beardlover

  • Doobly-doo is a meme :D

  • @PrincessSpaz12 so is millhouse.

  • @countpopethe3rd Millhouse is not a meme.

  • @PrincessSpaz12 but both st6atements are memes.

  • @countpopethe3rd "Millhouse is a meme" is a meme? I knew "Millhouse is not a meme" to be a meme, but now this is just confusing... :P

  • @PrincessSpaz12 trolling is a art

  • I'm over 9 billion years old, and what is this?

  • Oops! I click subscribed, but it wasn't an oops.

  • @FreewayTitan Welcome. And that wasn't an oops, either.

  • I've checked Susan Blackmore out... Man, so much both factual and methodological mistakes!

  • Who-who, who-who ^_^

  • xD looking like a fool with your pants on the ground

  • Since seeing this video about the word Meme, I have heard it several times of late away from the tube environment.

  • @leokimvideo Funny how that works. We often tend to notice things once we get interested in them.

  • @mickeleh Sir normally this sort of thing happens when a friend purchases a car, all of a sudden I start seeing that brand of car everywhere.

Must be a name for this weird mental condition.

  • Green halo.

  • I'm not sure when I heard the word "meme" for the first time, but I'm fairly certain it's not been in my vocabulary long. Isn't every word in any given language a meme? That's what the Deconstructionists were getting at, I think. A text of a certain size is full of memes, layer upon layer. There are so many, they get all jumbled up, and it's hard to tell exactly what meme you're dealing with at any given point.

"I am big. It's the pictures that got small." :) I love "Sunset Boulevard."

  • I'm a young earth / creationist... I subscribed anyway. :-)

  • link in the doodley-doo, hahaha :)

  • Ohhh I learnt about them ol' londan quotes from QI. :)

  • @georgianally And, oddly enough, I learned about QI from the comments on this video series. Funny how that works.

  • Wonderful and informative, I look forward to watching the next two videos. . . which I shall do now! Stay groovy Mickeleh :]

  • People still use "Who are you?" It has to be spoken with the right one of voice though.

  • uhhhh how did you know I just clicked subscribe when you said I would :O

  • Hell, you have stumbled on something big here.

As always great vlog, who's shooting your videos? Looks like some serious polish going on.

A girls name is a Meme

  • @leokimvideo It's a one-man band. Still kind of rough. Have a tendency to turn green or lobster red. (oh it's hard when you are color blind.) But yes... I've done a bit of upgrading. Simple light package. (two flourescent softlights on the green screen, and a a small LED light on the right side of my face. Camera is across the room on sticks. Mic on a stand—sometimes even in the shot, but I cut it out with a matte. blah-blah-blah)

    Oh. And thanks for noticing.

  • I actually heard most of those Ye Olde (wrong era?) English memes on QI.

I don't really want to pick sides here (-raised eyebrow-), but religious debate seems to be, mostly, nonsense. Nonsensical nonsense, in the sense that most religions are fighting because they think their god is correct when, essentially, the gods (most of them) believe in are the same god. Omnipotent and omniscient equally.

  • The atheist vs theist argument is slightly more justified (only slightly), but, what I really don't get is why they 'believe'. If theists are positive that there is a higher existence, why believe in it? I don't believe in my keyboard though I'm positive that it exists (as positive as anything can be, really, even when taking into account the idea that all of this is a hologram and really we're all projections formed by little white mice who wanted to know 'the answer').

    /questioning

  • "I'm 12 and what is this" was the only meme you mentioned that I haven't heard about, but I looked it up, and it's pretty funny

  • i laughed when you said doobly doo

  • What kind of Jackass would think the world is only six thousand years old?

  • Hooray for gratuitous Doctor Who references! *subscribe*

  • The internet produces catch phrases all the time. But most of the time, their.... cats phrases

  • thumbs up for dr who, lol

  • I really really really love your voice, and your ideals, and your superior vlogging skills.

  • hey you've missed two days!

  • who are you is actually starting to get popular in germany at the moment. well in german of course but still

  • This is seriously interesting, I was thinking about memes just the other day and miraculously today I see this video in my sub box :) Looking forward to part 2!

  • Interesting! I can't wait for part 2!

  • Youtube seems to have become a very lively place for religous debate lately. I'm terrified to jump into it all, I'm one of those rare people that walks with one foot in each camp. I believe Jesus lived, I believe the things he says, but I don't believe he was God's son nor do I believe he died for our sins. He died because he went up against "The Man" and lost, knowing he would lose. Which in itself is a powerful learning tool for mankind.

  • very interesting subject matter here

  • I can't wait for part 2!

  • Another excellent video. I never knew he came up with the word. I will have to look him up.

  • Dear Mickeleh,

I just think you're awesome. I love your videos, I love what you have to say about things, and you always make me chuckle. It's great. Thank you billions for making my day frequently.

    Yours truly,

    Michelle

  • I was going to site the TED presentation, you totally beat me to it.

  • The Earth being 4.6E9 years old isn't totally a meme. It can be arrived at independently through geological evidence, not just emulating others.

  • uRawesome

  • Is that speculation on your part, or do you spend time with guys whose heads are duct taped to a couch?

  • Dum Dum Dum Dum, Dum Dum Dum Dum! Doctor Who ftw!

  • I remember reading about memes in The God Delusion so I did already associate the term with Dawkins but I guess I did not catch that he had coined the term. I thought he had adapted an existing term for his own purposes. Guess I need to go back and read The Selfish Gene!

  • I actually wrote my first blog post on Dawkins coining the term 'meme' (I own a copy of 'The Selfish Gene') and how it relates now to internet society. It was an attempt to combine the thoughts of actual viruses and 'going viral'.

  • @Tennath "going viral" is itself a meme, innit?

  • @mickeleh Yes. It is. It was part of the point.

  • @Tennath I'm adding a link to your post to the doobly doo

  • @mickeleh OH! Thanks. That was a nice surprise to wake up to. I hoped you liked the post!

  • @Tennath Yes, I did. Wouldn't have linked to it if I didn't.

  • Comment removed

  • Mickeleh, You are so much fun to watch. Thanks for posting such great videos. Keep it up.

  • watchu talkin bout willis

  • It's true, most people don't link memes and Dawkins. Shame, if I set off a meme and people forgot I started it I'd be pretty bummed. xD

  • "Noooooobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!"

Super interesting. Off to watch that TED talk now :)

  • Dawkins = awesome! He is an inspiration for a young biologist such as myself. Although he doesn't have much new ideas of his own, he is able to synthesize the ideas of other very well and popularize them.

  • DOCTOR WHO!!!! If I wouldnt already be subed, I would defininetly sub now haha

Oh, had to rewatch the whole video from that point, cause I got to excited by the Doctor... Interesting as usual!

  • You make good videos. :-)

  • Super vid! I love internet culture. I don't really know it's history and it's fun to do some (responsible) research. Great to see Meme's defined in a broad way.

  • As a new subrscriber, I was really proud of my most recent subscription (i.e - you) at the Doctor Who-reference=)

  • I sure didn't expect the Spanish Inqisition...

  • the, "has your mother sold her mangle" made me laugh so much its kinna pathetic

  • I just got reminded of a certain episode of QI where Alan keeps saying " 'as you mother sold 'er mangle?". ahh... so funny.

  • "the cake is a lie!"

    I like memes lol

  • Awesome, I actually did not know Dawkins made that word! You have made me smarter.

  • @ErebusWolf You were plenty smart to begin with.

  • Memes. Love'em! It's nice of you to add The Goonshow Reference (Bluebottle).

  • i like all your videos, i think you opinions are always well thought out and interestingly delivered. My only qualm is that outro. super annoying. just mho.

  • "Link in the dooblydoo" = awesome

  • so i herd u liek mudkipz

  • EEP you said dooblido. nerdfighters!

  • Fucking epic.

  • The Doctor Who reference put me in such a good mood.

And yeah, memes are pretty cool.

    Funny video :)

  • is your shirt really purple? or green?....

  • I enjoy your videos; I always feel like I'm learning something vs. just the ramble that other videos provide. Thank you!

  • The Susan Blackmore talk was fascinating - made more so by your introduction to the topic. I look forward to hearing more!

  • Not sure the computerised text-to-voice was a wise choice. A little difficult to understand, especially when they weren't accompanied by captions. :) Interesting video as always, of course.

The Selfish Gene is by far Dawkins' greatest achievement. I don't understand why he has to be known only for his stance on atheism. I'm an atheist, and I don't like being put in his 'camp', but what's more important to me is that he's a luminary scientific mind. Ho hum...

  • ive been expecting you mr bond !

watch rocket booms videos on memes they are cool

mickeleh do you believe in god ?

  • Curse you for your cliffhanger!

Thus I must assume your mother has (at one point) sold her mangle.

(I don't know what that means.)

  • @Mrmoody I don't know what it means either. But here's my guess: A mangle is one of those twin roller things used for wringing out clothes. (in an age of electric washer dryers, we don't see them much.) Maybe it's a comment that somebody's clothes are dirty or shabby or ill cared for.

  • @mickeleh mangle means body.

  • @ilikepoptarts1000 Are you sure? I haven't seen any reference to mangle meaning body. As a noun, it's the UK equivalent of what the US calls a wringer, used in laundering clothes. I think it's very unlikely that "Has your mother sold her body," would ever become a popular catch-phrase. Sounds like a very rude remark.

Can you give me any citations that mangle means body?

  • i subscribed as soon as you said 'link in the doobly doo' THANK YOU

  • Wow this was very informative I never new the exact definition of a meme till now thank you!

  • Yes! a Dr. Who reference! excellent! :)

  • Charlieissocoollike rated the video!

  • This is fantastic! I love that you're able to take something that is seemingly superficial and put in the context of a larger discourse.

Sorry for the pretension. Keep up the good work though! :)

  • great one.

  • you're so awesome xD

  • you're so awesome xD

  • The video should have ended with "I'll be back" :D

  • Why did you repeat youself? I'm confused. You used movies, and television twice.

All Your Base Are Belong To Us! XD

  • @Litameena4chan It seemed funny to me at the time. It still does.

  • @mickeleh Ah! =] I laughed but then I realized, rewound, and got confused. So which meme is your current favorite?

  • Who are you? Who, Who, Who, Who...I really want to know...

  • @socratesjr Ah, yes. The meme lives. And now collects royalties at an amazing rate from all of the CSI spinoffs.

  • @mickeleh I suspect they would take back that "hope I die before I get old" meme now :)

  • I cannot wait! I read The God Delusion and just thought that "meme" is a homonym. Thinking about two black-and-white Londoners dressed in waistcoats bumping into eachother, asking "Who are you?" and roaring with laughter is slightly upsetting, but hilarious as well.

  • I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish but Kanye West created the best meme of all time...of all time.

  • @Rexicity Excellent, yes. With a spectacular rise. But a fairly quick burnout, wouldn't you say?

  • @mickeleh I must agree, but I know there are memes that pop out every time someone publicly embarrasses themselves.

  • @Rexicity When things that aren't memes pop out publicly, that's also embarrassing.

  • @Rexicity For instance, IMMA LET YOU FINISH, BUUUTT...

  • I was debating whether or not to subscribe, then you threw that Doctor Who reference at me and sealed the deal. :-)

Blackmore and Dennett took Dawkins' meme idea (or is it the meme meme?) to a whole new level.

  • I'm interested in these old timey memes could you provide a link in the doobally-doo?

    ... see what I did there? ;)

  • gah.

how do you always have smart things to say?

  • @hopeonatenspeed Not always. I don't have a smart answer to this question.

  • They still say has your mother sold her mangle down in old london town

  • @Chrisindapurplehouse Good to know. Under what circumstances? Odd that the meme has outlived the mangle. (Not that mangles are completely obsolete, but they're not nearly so common as they once were. Or maybe they are in old london town.

  • So catface is meme

  • According to the Bible world is not 6000 years old, it's just humans that were created 6000 years ago. Yes, I know that Bible says that world was created in 6 days but that is symbolic. The word "day" is used in the Bible several times not do tell that something took 24h but just to describe some long perioid of time.

  • @0frecel0 How do you tell what is "symbolic" and what is the "word of god".

  • @smokintea That is really easy, because in the Bible even if something is symbolic it's still the word of God :D. But if you are trying to decide if something is symbolic or not that can be a little bit harder. But in most cases you don't have to look for any symbolic meaning.

  • As usual, great video! I absolutely love "What a shocking bad hat"

  • my friend uses "who are you" all the time- not sure if it means the same thing but still... woo for random coincidence!

  • Tits or GTFO

    Rawr!

    Facepalm

    Them be memes too?

oh, and I am just a Swedish pervert whose bored^^ (you asked...)

  • @andreasfr1 Them be memes.

  • @mickeleh I learned something ^^

my parents will be so proud :D

no but seriously, i didnt know that things like that were called memes... thanks for this vdeo :)

  • Wow, I'm impressed. I've never actually seen someone who managed to not give an opinion on the evolutionary debate when the subject came up.

That being said, I've always associated memes with things like "all your base are belong to us." Memes are certainly not something I'd expect myself associating with 19th century London. Great video, Mickeleh, as always. I'm looking forward to the next one.

  • Brilliant. Trival yet deep. Already a subscriber. Nice one M.

  • great vid! love ur recent stuff

  • thats really interesting...!

  • very entertaining stuff... :-)

  • yes yes i did click subscribe

  • the game is a meme

  • Good job. You need to work on that accent though!

  • @vide0killedtheradi0 I've thought this one through, and concluded that I don't need to work on the accent. If I did a proper accent, it would be a silly affectation. Doing a patently bad impression of an accent allows me to be silly without affectation.

  • ahh mickeleh, i do love your videos.

  • So u liek mudkipz?

  • @sableyefan yep

  • ha a goons fan

I wonder if the Norwegian blue and mrs Slocombe's pussy will last 1000 years

  • I love a good (internet) meme :) x

  • Well done. Very much enjoyed.

  • I always learn from your videos. Never knew that Dawkins invented the word 'meme' :-)

  • Mickeleh, have you been watching QI, by any chance? There was a thing on old London sayings a few series back and both "Has your mother sold her mangle?" and "Who are you?" were on it.

  • @frasierfreak92 I didn't see that. They got it from the same book I did. "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds" by Charles MacKay. I'll talk about it in the next video.

  • I think 'Does your mother know you're out?' is still used today - I had no idea it was that old.

  • I consider Dawkins to be our greatest living mind on the subject of evolutionary theory. He is also a major dick and has added nothing useful to the atheist/theist debate. Encouraging a world view that puts forth the dichotomy between faith and science. Which is a false dichotomy and only exists if you want it too. Zealotry of any stripe is equally offensive. 'Militant' was a good choice of words.

  • What a shocking bad hat! My new favourite saying

  • I didn't relate MEME with Richard Dawkins. He has made really fantastic video criticising GOd and all, quite convincing. Recently your video are very informative, and particularly good! =D

  • heh- i'm an atheist :P.

  • What a shocking bad hat < favorite meme forever.

  • @freik7 I like it too. There was more occasion to use it when hats were practically required.

  • I'm going to use "What a shocking bad hat" from now on :)

  • WOO THE MASTER!!!! I actually go around tapping that on random surfaces, especially when bored on public transport. The doobly-doo is kinda a meme even.

  • Oohps did someone just click on suscribe?! ^^ haha I loved that.

  • I am Karl. Hello.

PS: I'm gonna go watch that other memes and temes video now, but I'd just like to say that there is a small river near where I live called the River Teme.

  • i never knew most of that about memes ... also i really like your videos - glad i subed

  • Very interesting Michael. Its good to know how Memes started in real life.

  • That was fascinating - I've never really thought of what the word "meme" could mean outside of the internet. I always assumed it had been created by internet culture, which I suppose was a little short-sighted of me ;)
