I have a pet Raccoon and that noise he is making is his call for you. My Raccoon makes the same noise all of the time when she can't find me. To the comment about the rabies, yes Raccoons can carry rabies and do not statistically carry rabies. Dogs have the highest rate of rabies than any other animal. I have a Class III Wildlife permit for my pet Raccoon and had to know that for the license. :) Also, many states require on-site euthanasia or on-site release of Raccoons.
I actually just recently came close to my first raccoon. It came out of no where and started following me, so I just ran. I thought it was coming to bite me, but prolly he just friendly.
I was thinking the same thing mrwise... just young and scared I'm sure, looking for some comfort. Poor little thing. Danny, women are going to fall at your feet over how sweet you were with that racoon. What ended up happening with him?
@ChelseasMomLinda The raccoon followed us around for at least an hour, we got some bread crumbs to feed it, but had to leave it at the park when we left. We considered taking it home, but with the dog at the time and having no room we decided that was a bad idea LoL.
hey...ifnu ever see a racccoon that small...you can pick him up...their jaws arent powerful enough to hurt you...and if its making that whistling sound like he was at the begginnning, hes signifying that hes lost and he is friendly, its a call of affection..the mothers use that whistle too...i say the coon was about 2 months old

you should have petted it. he wouldnt have hurted you. trust me. my mother in law took care of a lil coon. they are funny to play with to. lol. that and they climb up on your shoulders and play with your hair if you have hair to be played with. but, the fact that the little guy followed you is a true honor all in its self.
fhenfan13: no need to name call because he didn't know the baby was making chirping sounds and not hissing.
Danny: This coon was just a baby and most likely was used to being fed by other park-goers. Most likely when he saw you, he followed you in hopes that you had food to share. At this age, he/she should have had other siblings and a mother nearby but must have been separated from them somehow. Poor baby. I hope he made out okay.
I think they're so cute. the other day i opened up my front door & there were 4 or 5 of them. they got startled when I started to scream at my mom that they were there. beautiful animals. i read somewhere that one of the biggest reasons for death in their kits is from starvation in the winter, so sad. i've been putting little scraps of food out at night whenever i can. if my dad knew, he'd kill me. they go nuts on our garbage cans & our neighbors.
@dguerrero8878 maybe if you feed them regularly every night, they wouldn't have a reason to raid the garbage cans? This is what I started doing about 3 months ago and all my neighbors have commented on how they've noticed that the raccoons must have either moved on or died of disease because they no longer get into their garbage. If they only knew! ;o)
But be FOREWARNED: If you forget or can't feed them just ONE NIGHT...they will do ANYTHING to get food! This includes getting into your HOME! lol
Okay, just to clarify...I know he wasn't really attacking us. YES, at first I didn't want him getting too close because we did have a kid and you never know. Eventually we went home and got food and fed it. But we didn't want to get too close, because you never know.
So when an animal that could possibly have rabies comes after us and we have a child so we don't run up and pet it, we're retarded? Hey, maybe we shoulda just sent the kid up to him, just to see if it bites. Matter of fact after we figured out it wasn't going to bite us we DID get food and feed it. So umm...no thank u for ur nonsense :)
I agree that it's safe to not pet wild animals. However, feeding them only makes attacks more likely in the future, as they become less and less fearful of humans.
@ibtanners i hate to tell u this but he was not hissing at you. he was chirping. there is a difference. i know this because i have one as a pet. and just because he was out in the daytime does NOT mean he had rabies.
@ibtanners look at videos of raccoons that have rabies and ones that dont. i bet he was raised by humans thats why he was following u for so long.he wanted you. not to attack u. that or he's at the age where his mother `lets him go on his own. now im not sayin you should have went up to him and pet him. but he was being friendly not attacking and DID NOT have rabies
Oh, please retitle this to "lost baby raccoon"! People have enough wrong impressions about these intelligent creatures! This baby needed to be with others his age and learn how to be a coon and released properly. Most state laws kill them for no reason and deny them rescue or rehab - this is wrong!
I have read somewhere, that in some Indian dialects raccons are called "little humans" or smth like that. They really seem so intelligent and curious and naive at the same time. This one seems to be lost ;(
@SunChaserWildlife You're an idiot. The only way a raccoon can be released back into the wild after capture is if a licensed individual examines it for rabies first. If there is no qualified person to examine the animal it has to be put down. Statistically raccoons are known for carrying rabies and this is why those state laws exist. You suggesting the release of a potentially rabid animal so it can suffer more and infect others?
@KonigsTigger1 Would you like to go head to head on rabies stats and facts, before you call someone an idiot, perhaps you should brush up on them. And which is it? Qualified, or licensed that can examine? Further - Which part of "released properly" did you not understand in my comment? I work with and research these animals every day, as well as hundreds of others who do - and hunderds of true idiots who know of wildlife only what they see on TV.
I’m sorry but my description of you still stands. A majority of wild animals that tested positive for Rabies Virus in 2008 were raccoons(2389) at approximately 35% of ALL animal cases. Followed by bats(1806), skunks(1589) and foxes(454). Predominant infected animal species for years 2002-2007 in 49States & Puerto Rico were raccoons at 36.3%(2891), 36.7%(2635), 37.5%(2564), 39.5%(2534), 37.7%(2615), 36.6%(2659) respectively.
I got my statistics from the CDC where "hundreds"(see what I did there?) of people study the virus and its habits compared to some idiots who might work w/ one or two animals, lawl. Don’t believe me? I encourage you and others to visit the CDC website for the stats.
@KonigsTigger1 Oh come on! So out of the MILLIONS of animals that do NOT have rabies, you would condemn the species? And that is intelligence? Kind of like the same mentality that all gay men had AIDS when it surfaced and this stereotype was prevelant? Sorry, but stereotyping beats realistic perspective in the idiotworld.
@SunChaserWildlife How am I condemning an entire species? You wanted your statistics and you got them. I don't see how you get a stereotype from stated statistics by a credible government institution. Your analogy with homosexuals and aids was a stereotype, no statistics to support or acknowledge it. However, here I am giving you the statistics on rabies you seemed so adamant about going "head to head" on and all reason seems to have left you. "Ignorance is bliss" as they say, idiot.
@KonigsTigger1 "Although cases of rabies in humans are rare in the U.S., bats are the most common source of these infections." Aug 5, 2010 nsf . gov Not much else to say if you understand DOH (dead end host) and the reality behind stats. Just because MOST animals TESTED are raccoons, doesn't mean they are the highest risk. I really don't care about your intelligence, just want others to understand the myths and distortion of rabies stats.
@SunChaserWildlife "Although cases of rabies in humans are rare in the U.S., bats are the most common source of these infections." A sentence without any numbers proves nothing. By definition statistics is a collection and interpretation of QUANTITATIVE data. Of which the article you referenced does not include any statistical data on rabies infection rates in different species. It simply states (unquoted I might add) "bats are most common source" but offers no numbers on bat infection rate.
@KonigsTigger1 I'd also like to quote the whole statement you took out of context of the article: "The disease occurs across the country, affects many different host species, and is known to mutate frequently. Although cases of rabies in humans are rare in the U.S., bats are the most common source of these infections." Let's break it down, it's stating that the most common source of rabies infection in humans are bats. That does not imply bats are the top carriers of the virus.
@KonigsTigger1 LOL, I give you a scientific journal paper dated THIS week clarifying AGAIN that bats are the most common source of human infection and you still argue??? And that no matter how many animals test positive they are most likely dead-end hosts... Ok, you win. I know when to cut losses of my time ;)
@SunChaserWildlife You still haven't posted your statistics on the bats. I'm not arguing the credibility of the NSF, but a "statement" w/o any numbers to validate it doesn't convey anything. Look at the AIDS stereotype you mentioned, it's a statement w/o any statistics. Someone can say most of world's pop. is infected w/ AIDS, well how much is "most"? Where are the NSF's numbers on bat infection? The article has NO statistics whatsoever. Where are your statistics? Post em if you find em.
Two nights ago I was a fishin' in these woods and about 3 feet behind me, I see a raccoon about that size. I freak out and get all my stuff and move about 10 feet over to pack up and leave. It slowly came over there and rubbed up against my left and I touched it, then it ran off. Then I ran off, because I'm not gonna lie, I was scared as all hell. But that raccoon looked rather friendly.
Raccoons will adjust their schedule and come out during the day if they discover people who feed them during daylight hours. This one is just a few months old was calling for its mother (that "purring" sound) and was probably just looking for someone to feed it. If it wanted to attack you (or was rabid), it'd be snarling, hissing, growling and snapping a lot. Maybe this one was raised by people for a while and thinks of them as "parents"?
just becuase you see a racoon come out during the day doesn't mean it has rabies racoons usually come out at night to "avoid" human contact but if the end up near humans it happens that doesnt mean it has rabies
What season did you find him? Did the tree have red berries? Odds are, he ate fermented Red Yew Berries. Those have alcohol in them, and may have caused him to fall out of the tree. This has happened to my Science teacher.
i dont think it was a yew tree. but we just found out he was actually rabid when he bit my friend and had to get four shots, 1 in each arm and two in his as lol. we also got the raccoon high and drunk hahah XD
its a two month old, its been separated from its mother, either abandoned or she's dead, and is following you because its starving and doesn't know any better. but DON'T take them as pets.
it is less than a year, does not look to be upset, however somewhat cautious do to the arching back. (You can read a coon by its back movement!) It has been fed by humans many times. Its hungry!
p.s. if you think the video is funny you should see the picture (and the look on my sisters face) when the raccoon crawled up on a rock and sat next to my sister. haha.
I love animals but, I HATE raccoon! If I was that guy I would have hit that rat with a hard rock! on my camera.but thats just me. (:

This one is just a few months old was calling for its mother (that "purring" sound) and was probably just looking for someone to feed it. If it wanted to attack you (or was rabid), it'd be snarling, hissing, growling and snapping a lot. Maybe this one was raised by people for a while and thinks of them as "parents"?

just becuase you see a racoon come out during the day doesn't mean it has rabies racoons usually come out at night to "avoid" human contact but if the end up near humans it happens that doesnt mean it has rabies

me and my friends have a pet raccoon and it comes out in the day and is certainly not rabid cuz we found it when it fell out of a tree so we kept it
bappoipp555 2 years ago
What season did you find him? Did the tree have red berries? Odds are, he ate fermented Red Yew Berries. Those have alcohol in them, and may have caused him to fall out of the tree. This has happened to my Science teacher.

i dont think it was a yew tree. but we just found out he was actually rabid when he bit my friend and had to get four shots, 1 in each arm and two in his as lol. we also got the raccoon high and drunk hahah XD

I hada baby for a few days before, I found someone who could really take care of it. At first she hissed at us, 'cause she was unsure about us.
katemix 2 years ago
its a two month old, its been separated from its mother, either abandoned or she's dead, and is following you because its starving and doesn't know any better. but DON'T take them as pets.

it is less than a year, does not look to be upset, however somewhat cautious do to the arching back. (You can read a coon by its back movement!) It has been fed by humans many times. Its hungry!
