  • " it is only remains of the wall excavated that are left today" It is true that nowhere is the wall what it would have been but bits of it, especially the cental sections, are pretty impressive. And yes the forts have been excavated but not all the wall itself. Again for periods in the cenrtal parts it runs along a high ridge with big drops away on the northern side. Much more impressive than the Antonine Wall in central Scotland.

  • a quick word of warning for people from different countries (mainly america), the wall is very very very old and much older than the great wall of china, it is only remains of the wall excavated that are left today not a full size wall as it used to be when first built. Remember it has been there for many years and over this time stones have been taken to build houses and churches elsewhere. However, if you want a historic view and have a good imagination this is a site for you. :)

  • We play this song in band. :)

  • I will explain why Scotland didn't get conquered. Scotland was inhabited by warlike/primitive peoples hostile to Roman hegemony and were impossible to assimilate. These peoples also fought differently using guerilla tactics and avoided large open engagements which was the mainstay of Roman strategy. Lastly the highlands difficult to traverse; hampering Roman logistics. This made the construction of roads impossible and they were what allowed Roman armies to consolidate conquered territories.

  • I hope you Brits realize how lucky you are. In Canada we have only a handful of archaeological sites over 1000 years old and almost certainly nothing this dramatic or impressive.

  • Great wall, kept the Romans and the barbarians seperated. And now it's entirely in England, says alot.

  • @tdcpm27 Says a lot about what exactly?

  • The wall isn't actually between Scotland and England though. It is entirely in England. On the extreme west it is close to the border but not elsewhere. Virtually all of rural Northumberland is north of the wall as is much of industrial Tyneside north of the river.

  • Test if your insane. Try to build Hadrians wall in Minecraft

  • My babygirl..........even tho Hadrian was a King (male).......is named Haydrian. Great name.

  • @lovemyrobbenkayhay5

    Female version is Adriana.

  • @Miauriceful Thanks.....I did not know that. My husband picked her name......he wanted to name her Haydrian from the moment we found out we was gonna have a girl. Adriana is sooooo much more common than Haydrian, but still very beautiful.

  • When will it ever be finished?

  • 4:20, I guess the Roman's building techniques weren't good enough to last 2000 years!

    Pathetic!

  • antonine wall, remember

  • the Scots were pretty hardcore haha

  • Hadrian's Wall echoed to the cry of "Quidquam denuntio?" which means, "have you anything to declare?"

  • Just found out the Vikings came to Scotland hundreds of years later. So bad ass Scots were already there.

  • @perryfan10 the vikings raided the British Isles during the Roman's rule. As the Western Roman Empire declined, Viking attacks increased and they even invaded England at onetime. All through the dark ages the Vikings raided Englad, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. There is even genetic data showing that the Eastern part of England has the most people directly related to Vikings.

  • @Warpath2198 Thanks for the history lesson.

  • @perryfan10 I saw your post, thought I would share that. People are actually being tested genetically in the UK right now in an attempt to see where the Vikings actually settled. I found it interesting so I thought I would share it.

  • @Warpath2198 It's strange how traits form ancestors can lay hidden for generations then pop up. My son looks like a Viking. He has blondish hair on his chest and back like a carpet (it dulls the scissors if you try to cut it). My other boy could pass for a Roman with his dark hair. They are both badass unlike their pious Dad.

  • @perryfan10 lol

  • @Warpath2198 "the vikings raided the British Isles during the Roman's rule" No they didn't. Roman rule ended in the 5thC. The Vikings were much later. Hundreds of years later.

  • shit! Scotish was too strongs for the romans!

  • All of Hadrian's wall is in England.

  • the concept is "the empire".

  • So good that the Roman's pissed through England and couldn't conquer Scotland :-)

  • @adds3566 I think it might have had more to do with the Scottish tradition of stealing your neighbors livestock and raiding south when the crops were in. Lots of viking settlers in Scotland.

  • @adds3566 Neither England nor Scotland existed then and apart from that the Romans were not interested in conquering the north of Britain.

  • @adds3566 Southern Britain's geographical position made it easier to conquer than the north. They didn't quite "piss through" though, by any means.

Ever heard of the celtic warrior queen Boudica? She led an uprising of unified tribes to massacre about 60'000 Romans. It took a serious amount of Roman manpower to finally defeat her. One of the celtic tribes who faught for her were the Trinobantes (Essex area)... considered to be the most powerful celtic tribe in Britain before the Roman invasion.

  • @adds3566 Actually the Roman's didnt want Scotland. It was just too cold for them. They could of easiler taken it though.

  • @WhiteRabbitm8te he romans looked at the isle of Britain as hell on Earth, it was full of mad blue warriors and if you feel asleep ou could freeze to death, would you want to invade?

  • @WhiteRabbitm8te Rome built that massive wall and the other to the North for a symbol fact. Though they had 40,000 men stationed on the Island. They simply could not control it all. Going in a car is one thing. But marching all over England in armor while being hounded by people that want you dead. Is enough to say stop wait a minute. If we keep this up we are doomed. Its a long way to Italy in 122 AD.

  • Il popolo scozzese era tanto cattivo che per proteggerci abbiamo dovuto costruire un'opera così maestosa

  • Great wee film. I love Northumberland and all that Roman stuff!

  • it is 117km

    they say 113

  • Good to see on u tube . But can we send Gorden brown back over it?

  • LAWL Well done sir

  • Don't worry you will soon have one of your own back in number 10. I'm a scot and I don't like Brown I vote BNP and you should do the same before the so called minorites kick you over the wall as well. Lol

  • Twat. Go have a deep fried mars bar.

  • Shut your hole. Or i'll decapitate you. .Ugly prick i'll shove a fried Mars Bar up your English mongrel arse and get a rottweiler to chase you down the street.

  • ROFL, sorry but you just made yourself look like a complete prat in front of all these intelligent people, anyway, I didn't realise that you could afford a dog, or a Claymore, though I'm sure in the highlands Claymores are in plenty of supply, especially since you haven't left the age of Braveheart. However if you are in the age of Braveheart, correct, you will decapitate me, unfortunately you scots have never beaten the english before so........

    I wouldn't bother responding.

  • Ha ha I was only messing. But you seem a bit upset .

  • @254OOPS I frankly couldn't care if you were messing or not, your political opinions are small minded and stupid, and make me sad that people think that it's a good thing /sigh I stand by what i said however.

  • Grüße aus der Oberlausitz!

    Stonehenge in Saxony

  • The Roman Legions Legio II, VI, and XX were primarily responsible for the building of Hadrian's Wall. The legions were mostly recruited from Italy (heart and soul of the empire), Iberia (Spain, Portugal), Illyria (Albania, Croatia, etc.).

Numerous auxiliaries from Gaul (France), Germany, North Africa, Low Countries (Belgium, Netherlands) and Syria were also present during the construction of the Wall and to provide security.

  • Besides Hadrian's Wall, Emperor Hadrian also ordered the redesign of a wall in Germany against barbarians by the building of a timber palisade. This provided protection for Germania Superior (Roman occupied Germany) but also acted as a checkpoint for those trying to cross the border

  • When I last visited England, I was so fortunate to walk on Hadrian's Wall and visit the several excavations. I was IN HEAVEN!! This is a marvelous video and brings back great memories.

  • Thanx ! Interestin !

  • iv just seen someone claim hadriens wall is small because 'it was built by the lazy brits'

hey northern england? wtf? it runs through england and scotland, screw whoever that women is

  • It was actually built by german legionaries

  • a.k.a roman recruits

  • Nice vid, and thanks for posting it, but please, the Wall does not run between Scotland and England. On the east coast, it is at least 70 miles south of the modern-day border.

  • Comment removed

  • @lolatamericans It was built a long time before the Island would be known as England.

  • @LordHannigan The island has never been known as england !

  • I walked along there with Air Cadets at the weekend!! It was fun! Hiya to everyone at 1156 whitley bay sqd.
