GTX 480 beats 5970 under tesselation. Two 5850 is irrelevant becouse they are mutiple gpu's. How can you fairly compare two gpu's vs one? Despite the fact that 480 beats 5970 under tesselation.
Also, no one knows 480's specs. Therefore, we might get an huge surprise at PAX. it might be at the same level s 5870. I can't prove that, but you can disprove that as it's not any official source.
Also, all the upcoming games will have native support of DX11 and tesselation. Heck, even older games have started to patch-inn DX11 although it's nothing compared to an native build of DX11. The only non-upcoming-DX11 games are low-budget ones and console ports.. Heck, console ports are making fun of pc-users in my opinion..

You're insane if you think you can overclock a video card to 50%. The lesser HD 5870 scores pretty darn close to the 480. The only place where it has an edge is in the tesselation in the Heaven benchmark Nvidia clings so desperately to. The 480 will NEVER be competitive in a performance/price ratio. There has been multiple reports and statements from Nvidia saying the fermi architcture has driven them to near bankruptcy because they will release it way too late and the dev costs are too high.

Because ATi doesn't have cards that can play games with a playable fps under heavy tesselation. no, using cuda will not increase performance in pc games. it will make mass processing and server-side processes better, but it can't make people's games run at higher fps. why? because the gpu is the bottleneck anyway, putting cuda workload on the gpu will not help things, especially since even a 2.8GHz core 2 duo will not be running at 100% under most games. also devs don't want to limit their game to certain portions of the market, so any advancements will be limited
tbh stovnergutt is right. tessellation is what metters more right now, pc games should be moving on to use tessellation for incredible detail. nVidia put extra effort into tessellation for this reason, any of the new top gpus out will run dx9 or dx10 games too well for the differences between them to matter. Of course we might be unlucky and not enough tessellation-using games (which are actually fun to play not just tech demos) will be made. all that said I am looking to buy ati

exacly the same size of 5870 consumes (300W TDP)
almost the same as 5970, expensive as 5970 and as
the performance of 5870
with 2x 5850 (150W TDP) you beat GTX480
and still can save money
and let me tell you something about tesselation...
it needs the Api DX11 do youknow how many applications or games use
properly DX11? almost none but the nvidia/ati benchmarks tools
