It seems that reluctance by a junior pilot to override a senior captain`s decisions will continue to be a cause or contributing cause of airline disasters. Younger, less experienced pilots need to be able to speak out and take over command in any critical situation if their input is likely to save the aircraft and those aboard. Also what is not discussed here is `Rudder Snap`. The tendency in some of the 737-300`s for the rudder to suddenly snap full left or full right, inexplicably.
@simontatt "Rudder Snap" or rudder reversal, is a big bugaboo on the 737, but all the accidents have happened on the landing phase of the flight rather than the takeoff portion as this accident did. The rudder reversal was eventually traced to the rudder actuator being influenced by cold during flight.
I have seen so many of these investigations...It's funny that 99% of the findings include Pilot error, Pilot training, airline maintenence issues, extreme weather conditions and the ATC...MD, boeing and airbus manufactures are hardly blamed...
@argus46000 True. An aircraft is an extremely complex machine. It requires error free maintenance and flying in order to be a reliable means of transportation. The greatest commercial aircraft design blunder was perhaps the Comet jet aircraft.
It's amazing the extent the Americans will go through to protect Boeing from responsibility for a crash like this, they're just as biased as the Europeans with Airbus.
@rsattahip Wrong, NTSB investigators are working in the interests of safety, improvement and making aircraft safer, if they had seen a proven mechanical failure, why would they hide it and risk 100s of more similar planes in service crashing? and there's no total competition between Boeing and Airbus, airlines are required by regulators to use both, neither one is allowed to dominate, and technology used is very similar
at 34:41 data tells us that the nose pitched up, and the airspeed lowered. I'm not that smart on airplanes, but aren't these conditions capable of stalling the plane? If the plane turned to the right even slightly, the stall could increase the turn drastically, right?
I'm pretty sure there is a stall indicator on most planes. Could this be the broken electrical equipment noted earlier?
Just something to think about. Of course, there could be many problems with this theory.
@jabbernaut52733 Depends from speed that they had when nose pitched up.
Anyway still of course stall indicator failure would not have been ultimate cause for this accident. It doesnt seem anyway that they stalled but rather just banked and fell.
To question about deficiency in pilot training, there should be evidence to suggest it was indeed a pilot error. It's ridiculous how American investigators always take their plane's side.
It is very unlikely for three trained pilots to become disoriented at the same time, and even if it happened they will have time to correct it.
@Dosalt ...Captains like this are the reason for modern crew resource management. The way you can hear him berating his first mate makes the crew timid and powerless to question his judgement. It's the same with Van Zanten. His selfish decision to refuel and rogue judgement cost hundreds their lives. The crew didn't become disoriented at the same time! The know-it-all captain did!
@looiedl That's all nonsence which make the cover-up story. Pilots are not there to intimidate each other or to become timid by other crew members. If your life is on your hands will you be timid (timid for what? I'm confused). my head hurts
From my point of view they put too much emphasis on a possible disorientation of the pilot. Fact is: The plane banked righward and they could not fix the problem. This sounds very strange to me because banking rightward normally could have been easily corrected. There must have been a serious technical problem.
@ColdClearNorth American investigators trying to say "all three pilots went to sleep on the most critical moment on a flight - The take off ". Are you kidding me ? Read my other comment.
So the captain was a former veteran of Egyptian Air Force... and he didn't know how to fly a passenger jet? Weird, cause military pilots have more training than civilian ones.
@pharao707 Bullshit, every airline has to follow the safety regulations and every American Eagle pilot just did the same thing like a Swiss Air pilot.....
i actually blame the captain for many reasons : disorientation could be happen to any pilot while he is flying the aircraft manualy he should of engage the auto pilot other ways he most trust his instrment HSI (horizontal situation indicator) that's the reason the factory made it ...! and the second thing the conversation between him and the co-pilot it shouldn't be done prior the flight .. there is houndred lifes of ppl in his hand he was careless by showing his stupid skils .. god bless us
so called '3rd world' countries have much better airplanes than the west. eg: emirates is wayyy better than anything from US. so shut your high horses. US is becoming a 3rd world country lol
@freebird20002012 Well Emirates is a middle eastern airline which mainly operates in Dubai. Dubai is NOT a 3rd World country. I have been there, they all drive Ferrari's and Rolls Royce's because they made it rich in oil. But I do agree that US airlines aren't the best.
@IToldHimNotToDoIt Well to be technical Dubai is just a city in the United Arab Emirates, and it depends what you mean by 3rd world, its not part of USA or the Federation of Russia then yes it would be 'third world' but as for economy and the general wealth of the country then No, its nowhere near third world.
Not sure I believe this programme. Who on earth writes a postcard on holiday and then dosen't post it but takes it with them onto the plane. Were they going to hand deliver it or am I missing something here?
@anddyx I did that once when I bought a postcard but realised that by the time it reached home I would already be there. It's rare I suppose but does happen.
@pharao707 come on friend, this is a very ignorant comment. Every aircraft within commercial world regardless of whether it is a major airline or low budget and one are under very strict and extremely tight safety laws. They are always checked thoroughly and mistakes cannot be made. Look at Easyjet and Ryanair - perfect safety record..
44:00 The Egyptian investigators did not want to blame the pilot entirely because of his credentials, and the American investigators refused to blame the aircraft because it is American made, Boeing.
@roggerfrogger2 That is a very good observation. I suppose that if we drove and flew around in heavy bunker type contraptions, the G loading on our bodies due to sudden deceleration in an accident would still be enough to kill us. It is the speed that kills. The human brain and heart cannot withstand 100 G
@aizad3755 If properly restrained they can and do withstand that level of force. Otherwise race car drivers would never survive serious crashes. A fall from standing height in which one hits their head on an unyielding surface such as concrete or asphalt will impart approximately 300 g on the skull for a few tenths of a second. This was pointed out in a classic articles by Hugh DeHaven, one of the pioneers of crash survivability research.
@KILLUSALL92 Depends on the position you are sitting in. If you are lying almost horizontally, you may probably take 12G. In an aircraft, sitting upright and without pressure suit, even sustained 6G is likely to make you unconscious.
@roggerfrogger2 I kinda thought the same way. I mean the average human is only 190 lbs (or less) but just to simply travel from point A to point B we use a mechanical machine that weighs more than 3000 lbs. That almost seems rediculous in terms of simply moving the average human in everyday life. I suppose thats the "bigger, faster, better" philosophy of human existance.
There was no answers to be had in a mere eleven months, so those families should've shut their fat mouths, the damn idiots and left their stupid little protest outside that embassy. If not, it should've been crushed without mercy. Arrests, or worse methods.
RIGHT!!!!!!!! PUT THE BLAME WHERE IT IT LIES!!!!!! AIRLINE GOING BROKE!!!! CUTTING COSTS ON UNIMPORTANT SHIT!!!! LIKE PROPER MAINTENANCE!!! But their airlines when investigated found maintenace was not done as shcedualed and things were not fixed according to use. This is a huge problem.. they think parts last forever and when failing they change them.. You cannot do this ! Never ever. SO sad people lost their lives over this.
Don't be so ignorant. The Concorde was one of the safest aircraft IN HISTORY. In it's 40 _YEARS_ of service it only ever had *ONE* accident, and that accident wasn't even caused by a fault in the aircraft itself: it was caused because the Concorde had run over a piece of landing gear that had gone unnoticed that had fallen off a *DC-10* that had landed on that same runway IMMEDIATELY BEFORE the Concorde was told to use it to take off.
@pharao707 many luxury airlines had crashes over the past years !! it has nothing to do with paying a little bit less than other airlines , cause when u pay less you get less flight services such as food ,personal screens,...(etc) but u still fly the same aircrafts that many non low-cost airlines use's it .
lack of training....faulty instruments found before flight and too late to fix.....dark unlit night with no horizon....owners keeping no service records....there is your chain of events that will cause the crash....game over
I also blame the company for poor training and also the US didn't want to blame the plane because its american technology ( Boeing) and that would ruin our reputation
@jeremyv11000 Well the fact is that the US has been the only country that has ever grounded an aircraft fleet made in its own country, or example the DC-10 after theTurkish Airline crash and the MD-80 in year 2000 ( after air alaska crash ). Europe on the other hand allowed the comet, the A320, the concorde,ATR-42 to continue flying despite solid evidence of design flaws. get your facts straight.
08:53 The captain is not trying to get his plane back on coarse, but tries to stabilize it to normal flight operation... ;)
