@zekehooper Sure, until a forestry or sheriff catches you digging on "public land". From what I gather the act of metal detecting in and of itsself is ok, its when you extract ANY artifact from the ground that you are now a grave robber or artifact pilferer in this country. Everything I have read has meteorite hunting and gathering fully illegal and yet all these shows and metal detector commercials! Legally we are restricted to public beaches and parks, the laws stink thanks to greedy gov.
stick to private property, state laws do not apply nor do federal laws
almost every spot worth hunting is located on private land, except for state parks, under NYS law all you need do is aquire a free permitt at the park office.note this doesnt hold true for NYC as they have there own laws for detecting and almost ALL NYC parks are off limits.
public land means it belongs to the People, the communist minded people in this country are trying to make it illegal to do anything anymore.. Also alot of people try to manipulate laws to suit thier own agendas.
Robert makes sense, but in this hobby unfortunately, you risk more damage asking questions. The moment you ask is the moment that even a park, county or state that didn't have written regulations on metal detecting, is the moment that they do. Sometimes, it's better to conduct this business with common sense, with as little visibility to yourself as possible.
