  • I don't understand what song you played.

  • Pretty good!

  • Nice playing. Love the overdrive.

  • wicked playing! diggin it

  • The first part looks like the beginning of Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley!

  • sounds kinda like "bad seamstress blues" by cinderella

  • Amazing, man...

The sound o' Blues is in your veins!

  • Is that song by cinderella?

  • Dirty, Dirty, Dirty!

Great job...look forward to checking out your site!

  • Hey i have one lap just like yours it' s m favourite ...

  • Nice job with the turn-arounds.

  • obviously the wifes out................

  • sounds like some of that old school black snake moan/robert johnson era stuff

  • What key's a good tuning for a bit of lap steel? I want to start getting into it!

    Good video, thanks for sharing!

  • Most people tune to open E or open A for blues. For hawaiian and western swing style, C6 is popular.

    Thanks for watching!

  • awesome

    how are you?

  • nice pickin'!

love my magnatone varsity and matching amp more than pie.:-)

  • Friend of mine has the same lap steel. That baby wont let you down.

  • Yea, the magnatones are great!

  • I love that lap , i have the same among others but that my favorite .

    my tuning

A sharp on top ( thin string for the minor 3rd ) then regular G tuning

    G D G B D ...

  • rippen man :)

  • what is the standard tuning for a lap steel? i just found one exactly like that in my grandparents house

  • Most lap steel players play blues in open E or open A. A6 and C6 tunings are popular to get the swing and hawaiian styles. There are many more but those are probably the most popular tunings.

  • What are you playing through? Sounds like you could hit a chord and it would sustain forever.Nice playin!

  • I'm playing through a Fender Blues Jr. It's a nice amp. I use it a lot for smaller gigs.

  • what tuning are most lap steels in?

and what tuning would i use to get you sound?

  • Concert E pitch or Open drop D

  • I can't remember what tuning I used and have since changed it. It might have been

    E A E A C# E from low to high.

I'm simply going straight into the amp. These old Magnatones sound great. Thanks!

  • Nice playing dude!! Check out my stuff and please leave a comment!:)

    Peace from Norway

  • what song are you playin?

  • It's something I made up as I played it. Glad you liked it! thanks for watching.

  • Is that tuned to an open G? I've been told that's the most common tuning for lap steel.

  • I can't remember what tuning I used and have since changed it. It might have been

E A E A C# E from low to high. I do use the open G tuning on my Dobro for bluegrass picking. thanks for watching!

  • that is like..like...like...

I GOTTA GET ME ONE OF THOSE

and that was some mighty fine playing there

  • God, I want one of these.

    Nice playing :)

  • Sweet vid. I have a couple vids of my playing lap steel at a local blues festival. If you want to check out just visit my channel. Great job!

  • I checked out your videos, nice lap steel and guitar work!

  • Nice sounds, buddy. Check out a friend of mine. see what you think. Martin Harley Band

  • How much was this lap steel? this exact one was hanging on the wall in guitar center and a guy tried to sell it to me for $200 even though it was just for display and not for sale...

  • well, I picked this one up about 12 years ago for $90. I had to replace the tuners to make it usable. with inflation, that might be the going price, not a great deal but maybe average. They sure haven't been getting any cheaper. The good thing is that there were lot's of Magnatones made and they sound great so keep looking under beds and at yard sales and flea markets, you never know when one might turn up! Thanks for listening.

  • Hey, can anybody help me find out how to get my hands on a lapsteel and how to play them???

  • lap steels are very easy to get nowdays. just about every large internet music retailer sells them. get one and jam on!

  • What brand lap steel are you playing in the video?

  • Check out ebay. Gibson, Fender and Rickenbacker ar very expensive, but some brands like airline, supro and oahu/bronson/magnatone are great va;ues in the vintage vein. I buy a lot, and most need the proper strings (varies with the tuning) and some TLC--pots cleaned, grime removed, maybe new tuner buttons etc. I fell in love with them after one purchase. Get the right tone bar and some thumb picks and a video and you are on your way.

  • thanks very muc the help is really appreciated!!!!!

The only problem is that I am an 18 yr old male from Scotland with a very low income so affording one is proving difficunt.

I Have played normal guitar for about 10 years now so how hard do you think it will be to pick u[ steel guitar

  • Just pick up a cheap standard guitar, electric or acoustic, even if the neck is not straight.

Raise the nut, tune it in say D A D F# A D (Bass to treble), lay it on your lap and slide away. Use mainly the "fret" positions 0 3 5 7 12, and get a repetitive pattern going with the picking hand. You will get some cool sounds happening really quickly.

  • sound ma man thats a great help!!! Rock on bro!

  • Notice how Joe is dampening the strings behind the slide. And of course the slide positions are directly lined up with the fret positions, (not behind them, where left hand fingers normally go.)

  • Thanks John, all good points. I like your videos...keep em coming. Thanks for watching!

  • some riffs sound a little like - i feel like going home by muddy waters good playing tho

  • is it E B G D A E ???

  • I can't remember what tuning I used and have since changed it. It might have been

    E A E A C# E from low to high.

  • Great sound. I have a '53 Supro lap steel and also play through a Blues Jr., sounds great with the overdrive cranked all the way up.

    What tuning are you using?

  • My mother just gave a magnatone lap steel, its been in the family since the 50's, tho its been put away for many years,i had it checked out today, it still works fine.now, i need to learn to play it, do you have other vids any where?

  • this is just aweosome! sounds a little like 'in my time of dying - led zepplin'...

  • nice playling man!

    what is your lap steel?

  • Thanks!

I'm playing a Magnatone lap steel from the mid 1950's through a Fender Blues Jr. amp.
