Most lap steel players play blues in open E or open A. A6 and C6 tunings are popular to get the swing and hawaiian styles. There are many more but those are probably the most popular tunings.
How much was this lap steel? this exact one was hanging on the wall in guitar center and a guy tried to sell it to me for $200 even though it was just for display and not for sale...
well, I picked this one up about 12 years ago for $90. I had to replace the tuners to make it usable. with inflation, that might be the going price, not a great deal but maybe average. They sure haven't been getting any cheaper. The good thing is that there were lot's of Magnatones made and they sound great so keep looking under beds and at yard sales and flea markets, you never know when one might turn up! Thanks for listening.
Check out ebay. Gibson, Fender and Rickenbacker ar very expensive, but some brands like airline, supro and oahu/bronson/magnatone are great va;ues in the vintage vein. I buy a lot, and most need the proper strings (varies with the tuning) and some TLC--pots cleaned, grime removed, maybe new tuner buttons etc. I fell in love with them after one purchase. Get the right tone bar and some thumb picks and a video and you are on your way.
Just pick up a cheap standard guitar, electric or acoustic, even if the neck is not straight.
Raise the nut, tune it in say D A D F# A D (Bass to treble), lay it on your lap and slide away. Use mainly the "fret" positions 0 3 5 7 12, and get a repetitive pattern going with the picking hand. You will get some cool sounds happening really quickly.
Notice how Joe is dampening the strings behind the slide. And of course the slide positions are directly lined up with the fret positions, (not behind them, where left hand fingers normally go.)
My mother just gave a magnatone lap steel, its been in the family since the 50's, tho its been put away for many years,i had it checked out today, it still works fine.now, i need to learn to play it, do you have other vids any where?

Good video, thanks for sharing!

Most people tune to open E or open A for blues. For hawaiian and western swing style, C6 is popular.
Thanks for watching!
