You crushed the dreams of those pioneers that forseen the future....a future that people 200 some years ago thought was crazy nd impossible, a future that oneday man will build a craft that can take humans up nd return them safely back to earth.if they were to see us a year ago they would be proud, if they were to see us now they be furious of such a work of art would go to waste!!!
the technology is so old they had to retire them they should have before they killed all those astronauts they have the technology to do wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better they just dont want us to know it.
As our great nation falls to socialism our Space Program is the first major casualty. It truly breaks my heart to see something so fine and so exceptional be looted and raped. I want my country back so bad but seeing how our conservatives vote now gives me no hope. If we were back in 1981 Michele Bachmann would have won in a landslide. Our America can no longer even recognize conservatism. My son is only 8 years old and will never know what we do.
Okay, is it bad that I got a bit teary-eyed during this? So wonderful to see this program in it's infancy. I remember when I was little and the shuttle first went up, I couldn't believe it was going into space!
@cirian75 reusable ended up costing much more than disposable. Controlled landing was an element of danger because there was no 2nd chance or abort. Shuttle had to orient itself for re-entry or it would burn up. Capsules do not have to orient or abort landings. Also the extra weight of the landing system required a heavy lift rocket which added major cost. As graceful as it looked it was so unpractical.
@leosierralopez Who knows? Maybe there will be some sort of space plane in the future. It's sad to see the shuttle go, but I'm really excited to see what will be coming in the next half century or so!
it is shame, such a beautifull piece of flying machine, i'm crying because it is not used anymore, god speed columbia challenger discovery atlantis and endeavour, you will be missed

I reckon you didnt otherwise you would have picked up that accordingly to the book of crap Earth ais supposedly flat as pancake, in the centre of universe and so and so. The first 5 chapters were written by Moses, And where did he get that from? From God. So there you have it.
@fowzie777 So why is it possible God have told Moses the earth is flat?? No he didnt because the Book of Crap was written by ancient men who didnt understand anything. Now, you wake up and STOP hassling todays generations. This is the 21st century, GET OVER IT!!!!!!
@fowzie777 For the last 4oo years since Galelio and Darwin, science have been ridiculed by whackers like you who couldnt let it go. Well I got news for you fucko, not this time. It is high time you whackers SHOULD listen and open your eyes instead of believing everything on a pice of book. It is high time to stop kidding urself u piece of cunt!!!
@blana76 I miss them too. But, they served their purpose and did it with a level perfection that we should be proud of. Its time to move on and go further. :)
It pisses me off! The US Government wasted this beautiful flying machine for what? The shuttle was capable of so much more. In many ways, we have, as a species, regressed. In the 1960's we decided to go to the moon and we made it happen. After that, we were satisfied with LEO missions. We have shamed the memory of those brave men who ventured to another world. Now, these magnificient machines will sit and rust as a testiment to Americas impotence! What? is that laughter I hear?
@cryinglion If I remember correctly it was because she was never fitted with a heat shield and powered flight systems. The reason Challengers hull designation was OV-099 and not a number that came after 100 like the other shuttles was because NASA decided it was cheaper to build an Orbiter from spare parts instead of fitting Enterprise for orbital flight.
She may have been described as a flying brick however she is/was the most beautiful spaceship mankind has ever sent into space.
Dear NASA and congress. Damn you all for cutting corners and going with capsules. capsules may be the smart move with what the economy has had to endure the last 11 years, but not a bold move. Bold moves make history. Smart moves, play it safe moves stay at home and bolt their door fearing everything. capsules are not our future.
@KellicTiger Landing like an airplane made for a very expensive and unpractical system. Although it "looks" cool, Shuttle is actually a less advanced rocket system than a capsule system. 1000's of Astronauts never got to go into space because of Shuttle costs. It was also by design by fare the most dangerous manned system ever created. We could have proved re-usability after 3 flights but NASA ignored the impracticality.
@ti994apc It was expensive and unsafe, but this should be expected since it was the first of its kind, a really giant step for space technology. What if it had been followed by improved versions? Eventually cost would have come down and safety records would have improved too. Capsules are certainly cheaper and safer, but I wonder how they will contribute to the advance of space technology. I can't picture thousands of astronauts traveling in small capsules.
Here's a curious fact you neglected to mention. The shuttle was, in fact, named after the U.S.S. Enterprise from Star Trek. Some fans had launched a mail campaign to get NASA to name the shuttle Enterprise as a show of public for the space program. The White House was deluged with 400,000 letters of support. And, if I'm not mistaken, Gene Roddenberry and the entire Star Trek cast were at this test flight at NASAs request.
I know this is a solemn moment, but it cracks me up when the winnebago comes rolling out to catch up with the shuttle. "Come on, Martha! Let's go see the big plane!"
R.I.P STS 1-133. the space shuttle was a prime symbol of america. greatest (and probly the most expencive) vehicle ever to be built. The space shuttle will be long remembered by all...from young children wishing to explore space...to elderly citizens watching in amazement. Brings me to tears thinking of all the acomplishements this vehicle has made. a sad end to an era
@ELCINATOR Yea i always wanted to see that thing take off and/or land but never got to. :( I actually think the first aircraft I ever saw in a picture was the space shuttle.
It sucks that thers only 2 more spaceshuttles left 1 is with a robot and only phsicly 2 problems with the SPACE SHUTTLE but we will have more missions in the future
Excellent concept, but like some ideas that do appear to be good on paper. Don't always bring the desired result and benefit for the cost. We have to realize as NASA has to it's own consternation that space travel isn't routine in spite of what the public relations people might have us believe.
We are equally making a HUGE mistake by not continuing the Constellation project, and it begs the question if we had spent the time money and resources on other vehicles and missions where we'd be.
Thank you for this video Aumann1! As I watched the final launch of the orbiter/shuttle Atlantis today (5/14/2010) I am both happy, remembering when classes was stopped for both the launch and landing of Columbia STS-1 in 1981 and a deeply saddened by the loss of Columbia during STS-107 and the Challenger STS-51-L in 1986. Seeing the Enterprise at the Smithsonian was truly humbling. Thank you so much NASA for the most beautiful crafts ever built.
Theres almost something surreal about seeing this! Amazing footage though! Humble and pioneering music (apart from the Gremlins tune at the very end :-)) in the video as well, complimenting the footage! I didnt see any parachutes deployed though on the back of the shuttle upon landing, i wonder why this was or maybe it wasnt required? I always wanted to be an astronaut and explore the cosmos! Man's greatest achievement by far!
4:49 gives a good idea of the Orbiter's glide angle. It is the world's worst glider, with a sink rate of 1 foot for every 4 feet of forward travel. Perhaps the only thing with a worse glide angle is a TV set dropped from a high-rise window. I once heard someone say that the Orbiter has all the aerodynamics of a pair of pliers. For all that, it does everything it was designed to do.
Why don't they just launch the STS this way? Like Burt Rutan did with the SSO and White Knight. Just fly to an altitude of 16 kilometers with a subsonic take off speed, and launch.... :)
rock3tcat, the Shuttle Orbiter needs the 1,800 tons of propellant in the Solid Rocket Boosters and the External Tank to reach orbital insertion sped of 17,500 miles per hour. The only propellants the Orbiter carries is for the Orbital Manoeuvering System and the Reaction Control System thrusters. Space Ship One was light enough to be launched from a carrier aircraft and was designed only to fly sub-orbits. It accelerated to around 3,000 mph, then coasted over the top of a parabolic trajectory.
@billypilgrim9 No were not nasa is coming out with the new space shuttle design! how do i know? i know a guy who works for nasa headquarters in washington dc
@prckay They are old plane and simple. When the shuttle was first launched its total computing power was less than that of a Ti-83 calculator that high school students use today.
@Kostaplays You should check out SpaceX's commercial launcher, the Falcon 9 and the Dragon spacecraft. From every indication, it's on schedule (shock!) and has demonstrated great reliability so far. I'm sad to see the Ares program of NASA fall by the wayside but if private companies can do a better job, so be it.
Cool, but I say we demand a presidential ruling that musicak be abilished from ALL pilot videos on yt.

@billypilgrim9 NASA designed a new shuttle, but nothing will ever compare to STS.
